DD just started uni at Bristol. She just called but I only heard a noise and that was it. I am worried. Calling back but not answering

Pocket dial?
Do you have life360 or find my phone/friends?

Timeforachange26 · Yesterday 23:39

Maybe it's a pocket call and she's somewhere noisy

Endoadnowarrior · Yesterday 23:41

Last location at Beacon House

Dont know what that means
If you are genuinely concerned and cant get through via text or voice , contact the residence team at her halls to do a welfare check. Assuming she's in halls.
My DS has also just started uni and id find that worrying too. Hope she's okay OP

OhHobnobs · Yesterday 23:41

Is it freshers week yet? Possibly she's out and bum/bag/pocket called you? When did you last speak, could you br her last dialled number?

seadreams · Yesterday 23:48

Beacon house is on the main road near all the student clubs. It’s well lit and very busy with students. I’m sure it’s just a pocket dial and nothing to worry about.

Raisingresiliantteens · Yesterday 23:52

Thank you; yes, probably a pocket dial; would be good if she answers though; messages are not getting through so perhaps not reception.

I did call the university and they told me to keep trying her. And call in an hour if not reply

You called the university?? Oh lord. Stop. Put down your phone and go to sleep. Don’t be that person.

Anxiety got the best of me, only because she called me; I was going happily to sleep and wasn’t checking on her or anything

Yes but what are you anxious about. It’s a pocket dial. Have you never had one before?

I can’t believe you called the university after a pocket dial. How embarrassing for you. Whatever you do, don’t let your daughter you did that.

I disagree with this. I have now had 4 through uni and this experience would have unsettled me.

I see nothing wrong with op calling the university and as they adviced her to call back in 1 hour if still nothing further neither did they.

@bunnypenny OP’s daughter is living away for the first time. Naturally OP is concerned. And pastoral support is part of what we pay universities over £9k per year to provide.

Thank you. Still not response from her. Messages are not getting through and location is inactive. She called me at 11:30am.

11.30am yesterday, or today?

I can almost guarantee it’s a pocket dial, as a former uni student and also a mother I wouldn’t call the uni, you will only pull her further away. If my mum did this I’d remove her from my locations ASAP, so please bare that in mind. It will probably be because you’re on her emergency contacts list which is the only one you can accidentally call without locking your phone. Please, trust she is having fun and it’s scary that you aren’t there to look over it. But don’t annoy/embarrass her because you want her to be the first one she picks up her phone to call in the morning.

Sorry I posted mine before I saw this, how did she sound when you spoke to her? It’s very reassuring she called ypu

Yes, I certainly don’t want to embarrass her. She is very independent and grew up in London.

She seemed ok, perhaps a bit nostalgic when saying goodbye.

But she has been really looking forward to the experience

Try not to worry her battery probably went or she’s in a club and there’s no reception. I know it’s easy to say but I’m sure she’s fine. Try and relax, she’ll probably get in touch once she gets home.

ToffeePennie · Today 00:22

It’s very likely a pocket dial. I did the same in 2007 to my mum during a “freshers week booster” everyone was being encouraged to sign up to different clubs and stuff, I was taken out by the drama society and accidentally sat on my phone. My mum heard a muffled over-dramatic “help me” (we happened to be looking at a script for something). I didn’t know Id rang her until 8am the next day when my dad was on the intercom demanding to be let in and wanting to know where I was. Terrifying for them back home, but we laugh about it now.
Leave her for tonight - if you can, I understand you’re anxious and might not get much sleep - but bear in mind when she gets her phone out/charges it or whatever, she will see you have tired to call (and text?!) and will hopefully respond then, but it might not be until 2/3am. Try to think positive: she’s having a lovely experience with new friends and having fun!!

Thanks. Seems like battery just died straight after the call.

MabelAnderson · Today 00:24

So the call was almost two hours ago ? I assume it’s her freshers week so she may be out with a group of people, or in a noisy bar, probably with no reception now.
As pps have said it’s probably a pocket dial but of course you will be worried. I am baffled at you getting some really harsh comments here. Most likely thing is that she will text you when she gets back to her halls. I have one dd who has been at uni for years now and one who has just gone, I know how it feels to be worried about where they are or if they are ok, and I am sure your dd will understand why the call worried you.

DecisionTime123 · Today 00:24

I'd feel the same as you OP, no matter where my DDs were. I think its good that the uni have said to call back if you don't hear from her - keep posting on here whilst you are waiting, because if you're worried you're worried, its likely to be a pocket dial as others have said.
