AIBU to be annoyed by vegan ice cream?

I love ice cream. A nice creamy strawberry ice cream, or maybe a raspberry ripple, or just plain vanilla. I'm happy to pay extra for good quality ice cream.

But one thing that has irked me in recent years is the prevalence of vegan ice cream being sold just as "ice cream". This is especially true at the theatre, where little tubs are sold during the interval and no where does it say the ice cream is vegan. Its too late when you've forked over £5 for a little tub of strawberry ice cream just to find out it's vegan and tastes nothing like a proper strawberry ice cream from the same brand.

For what it's worth, I'm vegetarian and eat a lot of vegan foods. For things like sorbet obviously it's no problem, but why ice cream?

Get over yourself. I have an egg allergy and can only eat vegan ice cream. And it tastes exactly the same

I don’t think anyone is saying it shouldn’t be available, only that it should be correctly labelled and made clear to people when they buy it.

I’ve been veggie for about 30 years and everything going vegan pisses me off. Was at a wedding and got vegan everything and it was rotten, the meat eaters got cream of tomato soup with bread and butter for starters which would have been better than cold peppers

They 100% definitely do say on the tub if you know where to look. They normally have a kind of green sticker type logo on them (not an actual sticker but one of those marks). I have never accidentally bought vegan ice cream, you can always tell (mainly so that vegans or dairy allergy people can see what they need to buy, rather than to put dairy fans off, but the result is the same!) Or you can just ask. Sometimes when it's very hot I'll opt for a dairy free as I somehow feel it tastes lighter and I prefer it (not often but occasionally!)
Similar to your issue, I was at a vegan restaurant and they described their pancakes as buttermilk pancakes - no quotes or asterix, but as it was a vegan restaurant I obviously knew there was no buttermilk in them. I guess it's a style. E.g. a vegan style ice cream or a buttermilk style pancake. The pancakes were delicious, but I did think it was a bit odd calling them buttermilk pancakes- I'd rather have known what was actually in them.

I once found water marked as vegan on a menu. I was then concerned on what is put in the water at other places that don't mark it as vegan.

Vegan ice cream often contains cashews. My daughter brought that back up as she's allergic to that too.
Sorbet is the answer.

Yeah, I’d be pissed off with that too.

I got caught out in a hipster bar a couple of years back when they served me a vegan burger. A contradiction in terms. It went straight back as I’d rather eat nothing than fake meat.

I will need to keep my eyes open for any vegan ice cream Tom foolery.

Blah blah blah…I must eat the milk of another species whose baby it was actually meant for is taken off to be horrifically slaughtered so I can scoff that too…but I am far too up my own arse to care.

Magnum made a lush vegan ice lolly with blueberry sorbet in the middle and now it's gone and I can still get a Swedish glace tub in raspberry ripple. Every week I ask the frozen dessert section "why can't I have a vegan minty Magnum"??????

And hot dogs have a very disappointing level of Labrador in them

It will have been clearly labelled. Its a legal requirement.

The labelling should be clear but why ice cream …. Because vegans want an ice cream they can eat too? That’s a silly question.

We have had this experience at the theatre with no clear labelling, just a list of flavours. Then you buy and it is vegan and not nice tasting.

Also been to a vegetarian restaurant selling only vegan ice cream with clear labelling that it was vegan not vegetarian but no option of a dairy vegetarian one or any sign of what was in fact in the vegan one (obviously not cream!) I don’t appreciate eating something when I have absolutely no idea what is in it.

And you wonder why vegans complain about being ridiculed… they really do bring it on themselves 😂

I remember liking Swedish glace as a child, but that might have been more to do with my brother getting a whole tub to himself because he was the only dairy allergic one, and I was not standing for him not sharing his food pretty sure the pear flavour was good though

“cream” is a protected dairy characteristic, so it is misselling to sell a vegan frozen dessert as “cream” anything .
Doesn’t mean there is cream in there, but definitely dairy.

Sadly, breastmilk is a poor substitute for cow's milk. It's nice to have plant based milk substitutes available, but I'm quite happy that dairy isn't going anywhere.

Cows milk is breast milk for calves.

You can make your own breast milk fattier if you really need it to have enough fat in it to grow a calf from baby size to adult cow in a matter of 3 years.

@SethAndReubenTooSendGaloshes. Sorry about the terrible photo. Here is my evidence of vegan “ice cream” being much higher calorie than ordinary. I have no idea if it’s generally the case and I’m not commenting on “veganness” as such. I just think this is something people would also like to know

Vegans arent vegans because they don’t like meat. They are vegan because they think it’s unethical/environmentally unsound. Not eating meat because you don’t like it is a different thing (even if it means you essentially eat a veggie diet).

I dont get why vegans want the word cream anywhere near their food

Because the word doesn’t exploit/kill living beings. I’m not a vegan (or even veggie) but I do understand why they make the choice, and it isn’t about the name, taste or texture of the food (though they may come to dislike the taste/texture by association). It’s just about the animals. Many miss animal products but stick to their principles. Whether you share them or not, it’s daft to misrepresent what they are about.

Well YABU for liking Strawberry and raspberry ripple as they are the worst flavours.

I recently had vegan salted caramel (a nice flavour) ice cream at the theatre and it was lovely - almost better than the “normal” version. I hadn’t requested vegan but I hadn’t checked it wasn’t, and it does say on the packaging.

But of course you can ask them before buying the ice cream - “is this flavour vegan? OK no thanks, I’ll have x flavour” - it’s never all vegan.
