AIBU to be annoyed by vegan ice cream?

I love ice cream. A nice creamy strawberry ice cream, or maybe a raspberry ripple, or just plain vanilla. I'm happy to pay extra for good quality ice cream.

But one thing that has irked me in recent years is the prevalence of vegan ice cream being sold just as "ice cream". This is especially true at the theatre, where little tubs are sold during the interval and no where does it say the ice cream is vegan. Its too late when you've forked over £5 for a little tub of strawberry ice cream just to find out it's vegan and tastes nothing like a proper strawberry ice cream from the same brand.

For what it's worth, I'm vegetarian and eat a lot of vegan foods. For things like sorbet obviously it's no problem, but why ice cream?

It's very unlikely that you'd be given vegan ice cream without asking for it, and like the normal type it differs according to ingredients (coconut? Soya?) and brand. My non-vegan partner rates one particular brand of chocolate ice cream as the best ice cream of any type that they have ever had.

I dairy intolerant I ask before I buy. Do the same it’s not that hard really

I’m lactose intolerant and very surprised to see this. I often have to watch my family eating delicious ice creams while I am stuck with a boring orange lolly as the only non-dairy thing available.

Bad labelling is massive issue and can, and did, kill people. Things should be clearly labeled when on sale.
I don't get how are business lax when it can have really terrible consequences.
I've been saying for years foods should be named as what they are. Cauliflower buffalo wings and similar are still my gripe because cauli simply does not have wings. And if it ever does, god help us😂

YANBU, clue is in ice cream. They should labelled clearly as vegan.

In the heatwave, I would get excited to find the last packet of Magnum Milk Chocolate ice creams only to realise they were vegan. At least they were somewhat distinctive,

i abhor the proliferation of frozen dessert products masquerading as ice cream. I don’t have a problem with them existing for the people that want them, but manufacturers are clearly trying to dupe people into thinking they are buying actual ice cream.

it’s a purchase that now requires being very careful. I’m not going to waste the calories on a substitute. It just doesn’t taste good enough.

For clarity - i think products should be labelled and marketed clear,y. I don’t know when I last bought icecream at the theatre though - decades ago at least! It was always pricey and a bit shit. I’m picky with which ones I buy and I always read the ingredients. It’s not that UPFs scare me per se, I just prefer simple ice cream.

Vegan cheese has got loads better recently! Try Violife's vegan goat cheese and Cathedral's mature "cheddar". Also, Violife's version of Philadelphia is lovely.

I'm not allergic but intolerant enough that coconut makes me glued to the loo for a few hours. I'd be really annoyed if I was given vegan ice cream without being told. Though being annoyed is much better than your potentially dead.

I am not vegan but had one of my top three ice creams probably of all Times this year in Ljubljana. It was vegan, advertised as such.

Even worse was my secretly vegan and gluten free chocolate cake slice from quite an expensive cafe. Binned it.

I like theatre ice cream, it's usually those Marshfield tubs which I think are nice.

It's clearly too expensive but it's not going up in price as exponentially as everything else.

As vegan ice cream tastes nothing like normal ice cream the seller should make it clear before payment is taken.

I love ice cream too. But I have never accidentally eaten vegan ice cream. I don’t understand why Mumsnet is so anti Vegan!
