AIBU to not ask the nail technician to redo these nails?

Attached are some photos I had of my nails done professionally yesterday.

Im not a fussy person but I think these are bad? I was pretty upset because I don't treat myself very often. I'm getting them fixed by another nail tech tomorrow (at full.price). DH thinks I should go back and complain for a redo but i don't have it in me, she was so lovely and worked really hard.

I very rarely have my nails done professionally - probably half a dozen times in my life, since there's no point: I tend to abuse them via gardening, DIY and instrument playing. However, many women use it as a treat to themselves and I don't begrudge that.

In my case, it makes more economic sense just to keep a couple of bottles of nail varnish in the house for those rare occasions when I want to spruce up. That doesn't mean that other women cannnot or should not.

Exactly, each to their own right?! It definitely doesn’t suit everyone or their lifestyle/budget but it does suit some.

I actually prefer to do my own nails too and was fortunate to have long strong nails my whole life. But unfortunately due to previous health issues my nails were constantly breaking at the tip since Christmas and sometimes I’d accidentally tear one off which hurts 😆

I found BIAB gel really helps to protect my nails while they grow, so I started using that and will stick with that until the end of the year probably.

(a) what’s this pathetic obsession with nails that everyone has and She’s treated herself for the first time in ages after getting a break from caring for her babies. Don’t try and belittle her because she wanted to do something for herself. She hasn’t got an obsession with her nails and, even if she did, it wouldn’t be pathetic.

(b) do you think putting “technician” at the end of a very basic job description means you’re going to get a wonderful service? Well you’ve got a very healthy sense of superiority, haven’t you?! Basic? Did you spot that her cuticles were damaged as @DobbyTheHouseElk did? Did you even understand what @CostcoFanofThree was talking about? A proper training course results in nationally recognised qualifications and includes modules on hygiene, health and safety and anatomy of the hands and nails, and that’s without learning how to actually do the nails. It’s not a very basic job. You just don’t understand what proper training includes.

Come on people. You don’t need your nails doing, it’s bullshit You’re completely correct; nobody needs to get their nails done. Just as nobody needs to go on holiday when a tent in the back garden will do. Nobody needs a selection of footwear when a pair of wellies and a pair of flip flops will do.

Who is it you think died and appointed you the arbiter of what it is reasonable to spend money on? How did you get to the stage where you feel your definition of worthwhile is the only definition worth having? It doesn’t matter if she’s had more surgery than Katie Price and she spends every spare penny on Bingo, cigarettes and tanning sessions. What she drinks shouldn’t give you a hangover.

Ditch the gold line - it looks appalling.
Go for oval or round shape, not square - if you look at your nail shape, they are completely different to your inspo model's nails.
I have nails your shape, wide, and I never have them square for that reason.
Your cuticles do look sore - I wouldn't go to her again, even if she is lovely. Shoddy job all round.

@EveningSpread i'm no spring chicken and honestly a mani-pedi is a relaxing treat and really helps me feel polished on special occasions and sometimes when life is shit it's nice to look at my nails or even better climb into a cold bed and NOT have my nails or dried heels catch on the bedding. it's a little treat.

so i tend to do my own fingernails and right now i'm really impressed by Nail Blush by Londontown. which is simply a clear polish, i also use Londontown Nail Peptide which is applied to the cuticles @Hellyk1985 you might like these products especially after back to back gel polish.

FFS give over. If someone wants their nails done, than that's up to them! I get mine done every two weeks, why? Because it's my choice.

I started to write a post but you said it much better then I could have done!

It takes a lot of skill to do nails and there is science behind it. I have also seen some beautiful intricate artistic nail art and had some designs when going on holiday that gave me such a confidence boost.

I have arthritis in my hands and I hate seeing the bony nodes that make my fingers look swollen.
I now have longer groomed acrylic nails instead of wearing gloves constantly or wrapping bandages round the nodes, the length of my nails makes them less obvious.

It is my money and my choice to spend it on something that makes me feel better about myself.
I also have pedicures which might seem “bullshit” to some people but as I swim a lot I want my feet to be nice when they are on display a lot at the gym and pool and I like to take pride in my appearance.

I’d love to know what is more worthwhile to spend spare money on?
I have a friend who thinks going to the hairdresser and getting my nails done is throwing money away but she buys hundreds of books she never reads.
I think she sees it as more worthy but it just comes across as snobbery to me. I would never judge her and it’s completely her choice but I agree that it’s arrogant to judge other people because they make different choices to you.

Also calling people “pathetic” because they don’t think like you do is rude and unnecessary and comes across as someone thinking they are superior to others.

Well the design is revolting. That black line just looks like dirt.
Going elsewhere would enable you to make a better choice.

I wouldn’t ask for a redo as it’ll just damage the nails more.
What you wanted was gold, but it looks grey. Just moisturise hands and oil cuticles, I’d have it removed in two weeks and let them rest before having them done again.

I’m a qualified nail tech but I don’t practice. It’s unfortunately not illegal for anyone to call themselves a nail tech after watching a couple of Youtube videos. You need a specific qualification to open a salon but you can run it out of your house, or mobile, with zero qualifications, and if a salon owner decides not to check your qualifications you could potentially even rent a chair. DSis is a hairdresser and the last place she rented a chair didn’t even ask to see her NVQs.
You need a certificate to get insurance, but a 1 day nail cert from somewhere like The Beauty Academy is enough for insurance. My bet would be that OP’s tech is mobile or works from home and likely uninsured.
Unfortunately basically anyone can do nails/many other beauty treatments and you won’t find out they are crap until something like this happens. I’m not trying to nitpick, I just think this goes a long way to explaining why there’s a small number of truly incompetent nail techs and people offering beauty treatments.
OP I’m concerned that with the cuticle damage that they won’t be able to do much to fix this but worth asking a different nail tech to assess them in person. Don’t go back to someone this incompetent. She could make it worse and damage the nail bed.

OP make a complaint. I did once after having shocking nails done at a salon. They looked lumpy! I sent a photo to the salon manager, who agreed with me, and they re-done them (with a different technician) and gave me a gift card for £20.

Oh no they are bad aren’t they? I would be getting them fixed by someone else too, mainly because I wouldn’t trust her to be able to fix them.

I'm sorry, they don't look good. I would complain and request a refund or at least a partial refund so you can spend it on the correction visit at another salon.

The inspiration is awful, looks like you would have a line of dirt under each nail.

The way shes done them is not the problem, what in gods earth made you choose a horrible ‘dirt under nail’ design

Oh, well, no, your nails look nothing like that. They look dirty. Rounded might have looked better. But, I would find another technician and get them done properly.

Until they grow a bit, and perhaps can be rounded, one solid colour might look better.
