AIBU to not ask the nail technician to redo these nails?

Attached are some photos I had of my nails done professionally yesterday.

Im not a fussy person but I think these are bad? I was pretty upset because I don't treat myself very often. I'm getting them fixed by another nail tech tomorrow (at full.price). DH thinks I should go back and complain for a redo but i don't have it in me, she was so lovely and worked really hard.

He thinks I'm a sap!

This is really reminding me of Fleabag and the haircut. Yeah, they look bad. But they also look like what you asked for! The inspo pic is a bit better, but not much IMO.

It looks like a line of dirt in every nail. I wouldn't go back there, just go to the new one and send us an photo update please

viques · 12/09/2026 22:23

They look as though you have been gardening and haven’t cleaned your hands . Awful. And the shape is poor too.

EasternStandard · 12/09/2026 22:25

They don’t look like the inspo pic, but a bit like soil in your nails

Namechangingregularly · 12/09/2026 22:26

I think you should definitely go back and say that you feel they need redoing as they are not as good as they could be. Then look at it in a more positive light- you’re actually doing the therapist a large favour. She gets to practice again and she gets to learn that she needs higher standards. And that’s ok. Everyone starts somewhere. But not fair for you to just pay twice. She won’t mind you going back. You can even say you knew she would want you to go back because you know she would want to get it just right. Then five pounds tip and bobs your uncle

edit- now I’ve seen the inspo pic I don’t even think yours are that bad. Not good enough to pay for but the look you were going for would always risk looking like dirt. Can you ask for a voucher back at least. If you show the manager of the salon im sure the I wouldn’t be happy with you walking around like that. Representing their salon. The tech must still be in training.

Pause4thoughts · 12/09/2026 22:30

If you don't feel confident enough to return in person, you could email the salon owner and request a refund. If they're not forthcoming, you could send them a screenshot of this post to show that you're not alone in your opinion!

ThisCraftyAquaHedgehog · 12/09/2026 22:48

I wouldn't have said 'yes that's lovely' when she finished the first nail/hand.
I most certainly wouldn't have paid for them.

What kind of salon was it?
The only time I really hated my nails and paid for them was when I went to a little kiosk thing in MK shopping centre about 25 years ago!
I was young and naive.

Sam1000 · 12/09/2026 22:52

She’s rubbish. But she will still
be rubbish if you ask her to redo them.

Engaged249 · 12/09/2026 22:54

They are rotten. Just don’t go to her again.

EveningSpread · 12/09/2026 22:59

Right I’m prepared for loads of hate here: obviously they look terrible, but also (a) what’s this pathetic obsession with nails that everyone has and (b) do you think putting “technician” at the end of a very basic job description means you’re going to get a wonderful service?
Come on people. You don’t need your nails doing, it’s bullshit. If you get suckered in by shit companies etc, you’ve only got yourself to blame, like so many things it’s all a big scam. Just save your money or spend it on something worthwhile, then you won’t be disappointed. Having special designs on your nails isn’t normal or mandatory, just be a human and get on with life.

Morepositivemum · 12/09/2026 23:00

I’d agree with the person above who said I wouldn’t want her going near my nails again. Do go to someone else though op, to get them checked out and fixed

MrsKeats · 12/09/2026 23:01

I get my nails done regularly.
Those are dreadful.

cotswoldsblue · 12/09/2026 23:05

They're too short for a French manicure- were they that short originally?

@EveningSpread

NO ONE cares that you think that everyone should go around with un- manicured nails in order to spend their money on more ‘worthy’ things (like what, in your view?!). That is completely irrelevant to OP’s post and the point of it which is to query whether she is being unreasonable to request a refund on a substandard service… and the answer is she is absolutely NOT being unreasonable.

EveryoneLeaveMeTheFuckAlone · 12/09/2026 23:11

I think it’s more the colour combo rather than the job done.

Left · 12/09/2026 23:18

Oh lovely the cuticles look really sore - I think they might need some time to recover before your nails are redone.

I’d complain by message with pics, but I wouldn’t go back to someone who’d done such a poor job.

spirah · 12/09/2026 23:21

You should definitely go back.

I go somewhere (have been going about 5 years) and every so often they have a work experience placement or a newly qualified nail tech. Yes everyone has to learn but the shop ask when appointment is booked do they want apprentice at a cheaper price.

Not sure about apprentice- it looks like it was the cleaners work ☹️

I really think you deserve better and should go back.

People on here would help you with what to say if you’re stuck?

Speaking just for myself, it's fun and it makes me feel good. Like clothing, it's a way of expressing myself. The person who does my nails is good at what they do and has to be familiar with a wide range of products and techniques, so it's not as though they are completely unskilled. Obviously everything to do with looks is superficial, but that doesn't mean it has no value.

Sam9769 · 12/09/2026 23:49

Go back!!

TrojanDonkey · 13/09/2026 00:03

They really are terrible! They look dirty as everyone else has said.

Well thats your opinion. I assume you wear Hessian sacks and go barefoot.

Back in the real world some of us like nice nails, some of us like a haircut.

On that basis your comment is just plain silly.

Willowskyblue · 12/09/2026 21:43

I had a gel pedicure recently as a treat at an upmarket salon (first ever) and ended up with five bleeding toes, which have only just healed. The actual gel was uneven (thick by cuticle and raised) and looked awful so I sent photos once I got home and could have a good look to say I wasn’t happy. The owner, who had been away at the time, offered me an immediate refund. Look after your cuticles as mine were very sore and red for ages, which meant I couldn’t wear sandals.

It’s ridiculous. I find going to get my nails done really stressful unless it’s someone who has done them before as some people are just so rough and careless.

OP the painted line doesn’t look gold in the pic of your nails, but in the inspo pic it’s clear gold was used. She probably shouldn’t have filled your nails down so short either.

WearyAuldWumman · 13/09/2026 00:13

Hellyk1985 · 12/09/2026 21:13

This what the inspo was...

So it's supposed to be gold rather than black?

TheDenimPoet · 13/09/2026 00:16

DobbyTheHouseElk · 12/09/2026 21:10

Not great. They look dirty. Sorry. Like you have dirt under your nails. Was this how you wanted it or did she choose the design?

Yeah this was my first thought too. Just looks like they need a good scrub.

Exactly. Pointless comment.

And while yeah it’s not mandatory it is certainly “normal” - as in many people get their nails done all around the world. It’s nothing out of the ordinary or abnormal lol

Op has every right to expect a nail technician to recreate what is a fairly basic style. I can’t just call myself a nail tech and start tomorrow. Well I could - but it would be illegal!

They are all meant to be trained and often have customer reviews online so people do expect a basic level of service and skill from them.
