AIBU to not ask the nail technician to redo these nails?

Attached are some photos I had of my nails done professionally yesterday.

Im not a fussy person but I think these are bad? I was pretty upset because I don't treat myself very often. I'm getting them fixed by another nail tech tomorrow (at full.price). DH thinks I should go back and complain for a redo but i don't have it in me, she was so lovely and worked really hard.

He thinks I'm a sap!

No going for something much simpler. Lost my confidence now. First nail appointment I've managed to treat myself to in a couple of years

Awww I feel for you. Getting our nails done isn't cheap x

Yeh. I also have SEN twins so find it difficult to find a couple of hours to myself. But it's fine. We live and learn!

Ahh so sorry 😔 don’t know why she would do it like this. Sorry you’re so disappointed when you wanted a nice treat.

Oh no love 💕

OP your own nails need some love care. Use a cuticle oil daily. They look sore, or sorry to say, dirty. . Were they like this before?

the colour and shape are wrong.

Thank you. No nails are clean. I think it was pretty aggressive filing and cutting around the outside. Then the gold making it look like dirt underneath

Ewww. They are hideous in every way, including the shape. They look like you’ve been scrabbling around in the dirt.

For DH to say there were bad, I thought they must be BAD. Can't bring myself to complain but lesson learnt! Definitely a proper nail tech working in a well established salon

Why can't you bring yourself to complain?

LuckyHazelFox · 12/09/2026 21:38

I really think you should get your money back. You sound like you don't like confrontation but if you're having to get them done again, why should you be paying twice over?

euff · 12/09/2026 21:43

You would be right to complain but I know I would probably wimp out too.

Willowskyblue · 12/09/2026 21:43

I had a gel pedicure recently as a treat at an upmarket salon (first ever) and ended up with five bleeding toes, which have only just healed. The actual gel was uneven (thick by cuticle and raised) and looked awful so I sent photos once I got home and could have a good look to say I wasn’t happy. The owner, who had been away at the time, offered me an immediate refund. Look after your cuticles as mine were very sore and red for ages, which meant I couldn’t wear sandals.

I can feel the pain as you wrote that. Ouch.

This what the inspo was...

Ah that explains a lot.

It looks ok in that photo, but I think the dark line is a really bad concept. I thought it was a line of dirt like you had been digging with your hands in the garden!

DailyPlanner · 12/09/2026 21:44

You could complain and ask for a refund

but I wouldn't let that technician near my nails ever again!

GreyBeeplus3 · 12/09/2026 21:54

@Hellyk1985
Was you going for a French manicure with contrast colour stripe against the white strip?
And what did you pay?

Toomuchcoffeethismorning · 12/09/2026 21:54

I can see why you are not happy

I would expect this from someone who is still learning or not confident enough to speak up to say she couldn't do the same as your inso pic if she didn't have the right products

Your nail shape is different to the inspo so it's never going to look identical but it looks like she should have used a builder gel as the base, french tips and then it looks like chrome for the gold effect

Your tech has just used a nude gel and I'm not even sure what gel for the gold but definitely not giving the same effect

CostcoFanofThree · 12/09/2026 21:55

part of the problem here is that you have short nail beds that flare out.
you will need to choose a style that will taper the flare, not accentuate and shape the nails to give the illusion of length.
so just like clothing for such short nail beds go with a solid neutral color both the french and the line breaks up the look and highlights the short nail bed.
shape, right now you want a round, oval, or almond (depending on your hand) nail shape.
a nail tech with experience should have known better.
a faded french mani might look nice.
don't be disheartened go somewhere else and hopefully you will be pleased.

wanttokickoffbutcant · 12/09/2026 22:05

Oh OP - that is not good! My DD16 does my nails - gel sometimes - usually just varnish and does much better than that! Complain!!

EveryoneUsingOutro · 12/09/2026 22:06

Yeah they look dirty and she’s also damaged your cuticles by the look of them too. I would send photos (with your inspo pic) to the salon manager, explain you don’t feel comfortable coming back for a redo, and ask for a refund.
She needs more training!

Lifeomars · 12/09/2026 22:07

I'm sorry that your much needed treat turned out like this, I'd be gutted. As others have said the shape is strange and they look dirty. Hope you get them sorted and in a way that makes you feel happy

Orlastuff · 12/09/2026 22:09

Sorry OP, I thought you'd been gardening....until I had a closer look 😒

User0311 · 12/09/2026 22:12

The nails are nice, the style is not

BinNightTonight · 12/09/2026 22:15

They look painful! But yes definitely get them redone, it does look like dirt under the nails.

Cherrytree86 · 12/09/2026 22:16

Why can’t you bring yourself to complain?? Don’t be wet! They look terrible, you are well within your rights to complain and get a full refund. @Hellyk1985

Mumtobabyhavoc · 12/09/2026 22:17

Was the nail tech new?
Yes, from the oic the nails look dirty.
Yes, shape is not good at all -they look ragged.
No, would not go back to sane person for repair.
But, after one or two nails looking this way I would've asked, Is this the finished look? It's not what I'm going for.
