Licking dinner plates

Endlessblueskieswhatsnottolove · 10/09/2026 14:03

Recently my 8 year old has started licking her dinner plate when she's finished. Whilst I appreciate it when she says it's because it was delicious, I've told her not to do it as it's yucky and bad manners.
Dh thinks I'm being harsh on her for getting cross with her

Aibu to not want my child to think it's ok to lick plates after finishing their food?!

Horrible!

I am a plate licker. I am not going to waste delicious gravy. I don't need or want more carbs from bread.
Of course, I only do it at home, or at my DMs (she is a plate licker too).

why would you not dip bread in soup when at home?

I wouldn’t dream of it and judge those who do.

How does someone dipping bread into soup in their own home, affect you?

Onautopilot · Today 01:41

Hmmm..I think there's an advert on this site with two kids licking their plates, or did I imagine it?
Anyway, it's a bit gross by the age of 8. A toddler I would understand.

We always had sliced bread for that purpose so try that.

Myblueclematis · Today 09:08

I couldn't ever do this, my parents would have gone mad as well, they were both red hot on table manners. If there was any gravy on the plate, we always used a spoon.

I live alone and I still wouldn't ever do this, I do, however, lick the knife if I've had toast and marmite and the knife has butter and marmite on it. 😳

You sound nice.............not

Fair. I just have a really visceral reaction to the idea of someone licking their plate and I don’t even know why.

Dipping bread/bread roll in soup is something everyone does though isn't it? Confused

Mopping up with bread is actually good manners in France. When manners get too pernickety, like not allowing bread, pushing your soup spoon away from you or passing the port the right way, it's just a way of dividing us and them. Which you may be happy with but I'm not.

Licking the plate - no but I wouldn't get cross. Mopping up with bread - absolutely fine.

I said sounds as in the phrase mopping up. It sounds unpleasant to my ear probably because I associate mopping with dirt not food.

Yeah, mopping up the soup, or mopping up the gravy does sound gross. It's right up there with 'have a drink to wash down your food!' 😖 Bleurgh!

W0tnow · Today 10:13

It’s a no from me.

Though dipping a cheese toastie in tomato soup is a human right.

At first, I thought there's nothing wrong in doing this in your own home, we did it as kids back in the 70s and mine did it in the 90s, but reading some of these replies, it seems I'm firmly in the minority.
Back then (certainly in the circles we were in), this was a show of appreciation for a good meal, much like some countries believe you need to burp to show it.
The plates were clean before the food was added, so we weren't locking anything nasty, and it makes doing the washing up a little easier (not adding gravy or blobs of ketchup to the washing up water, yuk).
There was never a time when anyone was embarrassed about it because it was instilled into us that we weren't to do it in public, but we did talk to our friends who also did it and parents agreed that if at each other's homes for tea, then it would be acceptable.
These days, I am also in the camp of providing bread to 'mop up' with.
I will add that I've not done it since I was a teenager but I do like to lick the yoghurt off the lid of the pot.😊

I like the phrase Phil Rosenthal uses on Someone Feed Phil. He calls it zobbling. Sounds nicer than ‘mopping up’

It's weird that people think basic manners don't apply in your own home.
They're normally second nature so you don't even think about them for a start. Don't you say please and thank you in the privacy of your own home?

Why would you even make efforts for strangers but not your own relatives? You don't lick plates in public, you don't do it at home.

Kids never learn manners if they are taught they don't actually matter. And they have a point, if you teach them they don't need them, why bother out of the house?

It doesn’t but I’m still allowed to judge them.

But you don't actually know they are doing it.
Schrodinger's bread roll 😂

Cuttertheduck · Today 14:06

It isn't even a matter of manners for me it would just make me gag. The same way people gag at the smell of certain food or people chewing with their mouth open.
I am not a quezy person, that it is just my personal ick factor. So we don't do it the same as I wouldn't cook something that smells revolting to others.

On my own though I lick, fart and pick my nose.

I don’t understand why you have even got to this stage where you’ve allowed her to do it. Say no and if she does it again jump up and get the plate off her..

Absolutely! Or let her know thats a really dirty habit. Get you plate in the sink now!

PrettyLittleRose · Today 17:59

Berlinlover · Today 11:10

No.

So you just have a slurp of soup then eat a dry bun? How odd. Confused

Neuronimo · Today 18:02

It is a bit grim. Can you give her a soup spoon. We always had one with gravy, best part of the roast dinner.
