AIBU to think my friend is overdoing emergency stockpiling?

I get that we have been advised to stock up on essentials, though I think it will encourage panic buying. I will probably get a few days worth of stuff at some point . My friend however has, at least in my opinion gone ott about it. She’s stocking up a six month supply of food. She’s bought head torches, a camping gas stove and various other stuff. She thinks I’m being naive …Am I missing something here ?

Btw there are two separate stories flying around.

Apparently the attack was thwarted by a member of the public not intelligence.

However plenty of credible sources were talking on Friday about the base being put on Delta level security (they have intelligence of an imminent attack). I was reading them and they were time stamped on twitter.

So they were already on high alert expecting something but STILL seemed to have missed five men in three vans with explosives.

That is the biggest duplicate posting I've ever seen 🙈 must be an error somewhere. I've noticed MN very slow loading tonight myself

GentleSheep · 27/09/2026 20:38

Yes me too, it's very laggy.

Sorry!!!

If your friend has got the space to stockpile then let her.

At the end of the day there is only so much dried and canned goods you can eat before craving a bit of the fresh stuff and/or an egg.

My biggest tip for prepping for Armageddon is to unpave those paved spaces many of us have and grow baby grow.

@Madamefroufrou I think you could genuinely benefit from some counselling. This level of anxiety and worrying is not healthy and will damage you long term

Grabbed a few more gas canisters today in Homebargains £3.99 for four.

What on earth for?! Are you expecting a nuclear attack, or what?! I’m not sure you’d want to survive one of those! 😆

Potential, intermittent power cuts, obviously. It's intermittent disruption I'm planning for. Not WW3 which frankly no one can plan for. Intermittent issues such as power cuts which can be caused by the global fuel issues exacerbated by, atm, the multiple conflicts. Issues with digital infrastructure caused by same and the attempts on our systems that happen weekly. Extreme weather. And so on.

I had to have a stern word with myself over the camping stove idea. I mean I was a scientist in my previous life and had used bunsen burners and a gas chromatography machine! I know people can get more cautious/nervous as they age (I certainly have done) but that's ridiculous, so I have bitten the bullet! Stove's due to arrive today, then will be shopping for propane gas canisters (and have checked how best to store them).

Oh good plan. Are you going out and stealing and killing cows the minute the power goes off, after day three or day five?

Seriously, you would think she would wait a week at least?

I was reading a year old article in a Country Life just yesterday
about rustling, not only large farm plant/equipment but animals,
dead of night, moonless, silent, lightsless, swift, gone…

I recall…(years ago) closing the gate to the horses field with a
bent wire hooked over the post. 8 horses still there in the morning,
I wouldn’t be so lax now, or with any other livestock.

We go camping so we use them anyway but at that price it’s a bargain.

Also we have no mains gas cooking in the property so in the event of a power cut regardless of the reason we can then still cook without firing up the bbq.

Yes have been looking on Amazon but have read reviews that not all of them are capable of actually working correctly so am wondering which one to buy (would need to be portable). However I will be using my stove outdoors so there's that.

That was my initial reaction but on thinking about it I suspect this isn't really anything very new, what's new is making the plans more public which is meeting Russian propaganda with propaganda of the West and sending all sorts of messages to both allies and enemies. So I wouldn't let this specific story wind you up too much.
Obviously the whole picture isn't good. But this on its own could feel more alarming than it really is. Any country close to Russia will have had very long term plans in place: it's we further away that have been ignoring the threat Putin poses.

At least they are planning, which is very sensible.

Nato prepares for Russian missile attacks at sea Alliance holds major drill for high-intensity combat off Scottish coast amid fears of imminent aggression

Very worrying especially since I live in Scotland. Should I start spending all my money now? (joking, not joking)
