AIBU to think my friend is overdoing emergency stockpiling?

I get that we have been advised to stock up on essentials, though I think it will encourage panic buying. I will probably get a few days worth of stuff at some point . My friend however has, at least in my opinion gone ott about it. She’s stocking up a six month supply of food. She’s bought head torches, a camping gas stove and various other stuff. She thinks I’m being naive …Am I missing something here ?

A major incident has been declared and homes have been evacuated in a village near an RAF base which hosts the United States Air Force.

Gloucestershire Police said residents in Whelford, near RAF Fairford, have been placed in a leisure centre while investigations continue.

Several men have been arrested suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act, police said.

The Army's specialist explosive ordnance disposal team is currently examining a number of vehicles.

Over the last couple of days a number of us bases in the UK have been noted to have put them on their highest level of alert (basically they have intelligence that an attack is imminent). Now this.

More details here:

And here

I mean arrests for explosives and searching cars for bombs is totally normal.

Meanwhile there's rumours about the security of communications to the trident system too.

@RedToothBrush that's concerning 😟

BBC news (Kuenssberg) has it on a strapline bottom of screen but nothing else yet?

taxidriver · 27/09/2026 10:15

makes a grab bag seem an immediate idea

Yes it does! I wonder how many of today's Fairford evacuees had a grab bag ready?

FindingMeno · 27/09/2026 12:46

The fact its being reported that hazardous response teams are there makes you wonder if there's something we don't know.

RedToothBrush · 27/09/2026 13:45

It sounds like the incident was not intelligence led and instead was due to the viligance of a local villager who reported the suspicious activity of three vans to police.

If that's the case, that's a close call.

Anyone else starting to watch The Wargame?
It’s really interesting. It revolves around a fictional full-on Russian attack on the UK.

RedToothBrush · 27/09/2026 14:01

Burnham has cancelled a previous engagement and is being briefed at an emergency meeting.

This is being taken seriously.

If the SHTF im digging a hole in the garden. But for a impromptu toilet as too lazy to dig a bunker.

I went look for a more economical car today to share with my teen and the garage next door had no petrol. The sheer panic. Until I saw they was doing a refit! Phew.

I'm wondering how I'd get ds back from uni 170 miles away. I need to be mindful he might not want rescued by mum as he is 22, built like a twig and could probably survive for weeks on vodka and Guinness only. He asked if we could post him some tins so on the other hand his survival instincts seem pretty shit. He could talk endless politics to the zombies to blow their minds I guess.

You could also place an amazon voddy order for him...if shit hits the fan he can at least get pished and eat beans and sausage. Ohhh can you order me that too actually? Sounds like a decent plan. Wonder what tinned tatties taste like 🤔 could actually make a good dinner 🤪.

Wes Streeting confirms he's spoken to his US counterpart, Pete Hegseth, about the incident at RAF Fairford.

He says of Donald Trump's comments: "This is my first experience as defence secretary of responding live to President Trump and I'm sure it won't be the only occasion.

"I'm sure you will understand that I'm not going to comment on a live operation and operational security matters.

"I don't think it will come as a surprise to anyone that given the importance of Fairford - not just to the UK but to the US - we've been working closely with our American friends, and I've been in touch during the course of today with my counterpart, Pete Hegseth."

Maybe he will be nice and continue to sell us diesel...

A British farmer returning home from a party last night stumbled upon the group preparing to attack RAF Fairford, potentially thwarting their plan - The Telegraph

The attackers fled the scene on foot, with Gloucestershire Constabulary managing to capture them within 25 minutes.

Wasn't there a British film where this is the plot? This is the most British thing ever.

Btw there are two separate stories flying around.

Apparently the attack was thwarted by a member of the public not intelligence.

However plenty of credible sources were talking on Friday about the base being put on Delta level security (they have intelligence of an imminent attack). I was reading them and they were time stamped on twitter.

So they were already on high alert expecting something but STILL seemed to have missed five men in three vans with explosives.
