To call in sick?

I’m on my first day back at work after 10 days annual leave.

I was walking down the road this morning when I rolled my ankle and fell, I have horrific grazes on my knee and elbow, and my ankle is swelling up hugely and is painful even at rest.

AIBU to turn up, explain what’s happened and go home? When I’m cleaned up I could probably work but I’m in so much pain at the moment I feel sick, I have two fresh grazes that are about to bleed through my clothes and I don’t know whether the adrenaline carried me to the bus or if I can walk.

Forget your staffing levels! Tell them you can’t bear the pain any longer, swelling is getting worse, you’re going to get it checked. Then go to the closest minor injuries unit.

Boopeedoop · Today 11:40

What job do you do? Because I guarantee you aren't doing it to your full capability right now anyway, being in so much pain.

Go and get checked. Everyone at work will survive. It's inconvenient for them but hey ho!

Realistically I know it’s not but I’m in so much pain, everything feels like it’s burning, I’ve hurt my wrist and elbow too where I went down and everything is just sore

Your wrist is more likely to be an issue than your leg. We automatically put our hands out when we fall and that means all your weight on your wrist. Very common injury.

itsnotagameshow · Today 11:40

Honestly, get an Uber to urgent care. I tripped and thought I'd only sprained my ankle a few years back and it turned out I had a spiral fracture and the bone could have gone out of alignment at any time, leading to needing the metal cage thing etc rather than just a plaster cast. Can you ring 111 (who will tell you to go to Xray etc) and then tell work you are going on their advice?

I'm an H&S Manager at work I know the HSE would require us to have a first aider assess you if one is available, you to contact 111, work would arrange transport to say Urgent Care and also make a note in the accident book. You should be able to leave under needing medical assessment as you are not fit to continue working safely.

I just can’t leave now! We’re so busy, I’ve had to sneak off to the toilet to take a minute as I’m in so much pain

You can leave they can't stop you. They should have a contingency plan for emergency absences.

I can’t, I’d get in too much trouble. We’re seriously understaffed. I just have to keep taking breaks because it’s just getting worse and worse. The painkillers have done nothing!

Don't be walking on that for much longer/at all. Tell your line manager/person in charge you need to go to hospital to get checked over. Get a taxi/colleague to drive you. Well done for getting into work, but life happens. It's not your fault. They will have to cope without you for the rest of day at the very least

I did virtually the same thing back in April. I'd been off for two weeks when I fell over on the last day of my annual leave. I cried like a baby from the shock and pain of it. As I couldn't walk I knew I'd broken something. Taken over to minor injuries (in hindsight I wish I'd gone to the larger hospital for a wheelchair) which confirmed I had a minor break and needed a week off to recover.

Itllbereadysoon · Today 11:52

Tink3rbell30 · Today 11:12

Oh bless you, you do need to go to minor injuries when you can.

This. They'll x-ray and give you foot exercises to do in the least. Doesn't matter how busy work is. It's needs elevating too. Dont mean to be unkind but you're not doing yourself any favours by being a martyr. You're colleagues are aware so you've made a point of them now knowing that you weren't simply extending your annual leave. Go to minor injuries and then home. Hope your'e feeling better soon. I know how painful it can be.

No but neither does the person I was responding to and I was basing my response on statistics.

The same way OP did when she said a man wouldn't come in and would be in bed all week resting a sprain?

Go to work, let your lovely colleagues look after you, when safely there take off your dick and look at the injury, you might need an xray, is there a minor injuries unit nearby? Do any of your colleagues drive to work?

this wasn’t your fault, it’s ok to cry, get looked after

'Take off your dick'... sorry but that made me laugh out loud. What does it say when your phone autocorrects sock to dick 😂

" I'd get into too much trouble"

You're a fully grown adult with a potential broken ankle.

I simply can't fathom this level of martyrdom.

You should never have gone into work if there was any chance you wouldn't be able to escape the building once you got there.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · Today 12:04

Get a cab to minor injuries if nobody can give you a lift. Think straight, you couldn't possibly get in trouble for needing to get an injury assessed.

jackstini · Today 12:06

You need to get it seen to and stop walking on it! You could be making it much worse and end up being off much longer

Greedybilly · Today 12:07

Mate, your workplace sounds shit.

I did similar at work. First aider came. A colleague drove me to MIU and waited then drove me back home. Everyone was concerned for me.

Id broken a bone in my ankle, had to wear a walking boot. You really need to get it looked at.

ParkingNightmares · Today 12:11

Get yourself to an urgent treatment centre for an xray. You should not be at work and anyone suggesting otherwise needs to give their head a wobble.

I once was involved in a hit and run on my bike, left in the road having fallen on my hand and arm. Tried to be a martyr and carried on to work ....with a multiple fractured wrist as it turned out !

A sprained ankle and skint knee is not a reason to skip work unless you work in a job that involves you being on your feet all day.
If you work in an office you are being absolutely ridiculous, take a couple of ibuprofen and ice your ankle at work and if needed im sure you can get a couple of plasters for your knee from the 1st aid box

I've sprained my ankle twice, the first time it was a really severe sprain caused by falling into a hole in the pavement and let me tell you it was agony. You could see the swelling increasing almost minute by minute, it was very painful and there was no way i could have worked. i could not walk at all. My ankle caused problems for several years. The second time was much less problematic and i did work. So it really is a case by case basis. A bit of empathy might not go amiss, calling someone "absolutely ridiculous" isn't necessary.

LakieLady · Today 12:14

Thirteenblackcats · Today 08:39

Hope you’re ok @iminpain

im not sure it’s an A&E type thing, do you have a minor injuries or urgent care unit you can visit.

I can’t believe how lacking in empathy some people are on here, fucks sake why do you always have to be awful?

I thought it wasn't an A&E thing when I badly twisted my knee.

Although it hurt, I went to the pub with some mates, got a lift home and when I tried to get out of the car, it completely gave way and I landed on my arse in the street.

I iced it as much as I could, then strapped it up with a crepe bandage. After a very sleepless night, I undid the bandage and, with no exaggeration, watched my knee double in size. I couldn't straighten it or put any weight on it, so called a cab and took myself to hospital.

After a couple of hours in A&E, they decided to do an arthroscopy to see what the fuck I'd done. When I woke up, my leg was in a cast from ankle to arse: I'd dislocated my kneecap and torn two ligaments. I spent two weeks in hospital and 6 weeks in plaster.

Stressedoutmummyof3 · Today 12:16

Have you actually spoken to your manager? Shown them your ankle? Explained you are not working at full capacity due to the pain? No matter how short staffed they are it would be a really shit manager who didn't tell you to go to A&E.
You are risking making your injuries worse which will result in you being off longer, point that out to your manager too.
If you insist on staying on you'll need to get medical attention as soon as you finish work but honestly once this is over maybe you need a new job where they actually care about their staff being fit enough for work.

Because of how busy the office is? Frankly if you need medical attention go get it, he’s your boss not your keeper. He’s opening himself up to a complaint if you’re being told not to seek medical attention and you are in pain
