To call in sick?

iminpain · Today 07:50

I’m on my first day back at work after 10 days annual leave.

I was walking down the road this morning when I rolled my ankle and fell, I have horrific grazes on my knee and elbow, and my ankle is swelling up hugely and is painful even at rest.

AIBU to turn up, explain what’s happened and go home? When I’m cleaned up I could probably work but I’m in so much pain at the moment I feel sick, I have two fresh grazes that are about to bleed through my clothes and I don’t know whether the adrenaline carried me to the bus or if I can walk.

OP I went over on my ankle and got a double fracture. If I'd tried to power through I could have done a lot of damage. As it is the torn ligaments have been far harder to recover from. People saying it's just a sprain don't know what they are talking about. Go home then to urgent care if you are still worried after assessing. Or straight to urgent care, especially if you can't put any weight on it.

A sprained ankle and skint knee is not a reason to skip work unless you work in a job that involves you being on your feet all day.
If you work in an office you are being absolutely ridiculous, take a couple of ibuprofen and ice your ankle at work and if needed im sure you can get a couple of plasters for your knee from the 1st aid box

God there's always one isn't there? Being in a ton of pain and shock is absolutely a reason to call in sick. It's only a job, she doesn't owe her employer to work through the pain.

This. I walked around on a small fracture for three weeks once because i assumed it was a sprain.

I did this too. Fell over on a run, it really hurt but I thought I could just run through the pain and it would be fine. As soon as I got home and took my trainer off I was in agony.

Turned out I'd fractured my big toe and I'm not allowed to run for a few weeks now.

You mean you want to turn up at work and then go home?

Daft. Just get a coffee at work, sit down and you’ll start to feel better

And her swollen ankle ?

SaySomethingMan · Today 10:35

@iminpain I’m so sorry for the initial comments you had. You should’ve gone to show your face at work and then gone home. I’m guessing you’re unable to work from home at all.
I hope your ankle heals soon

Mumofoneandone · Today 10:35

I would contact 111. You are clearly shaken and will be on an adrenaline comedown. If you are feeling sick or dizzy, you could have banged your head and have a risk of concussion.
Whilst you might survive work today, you could struggle tomorrow, as sometimes you get a delayed reaction. She how you are and if you need to phone in sick, then do!

And her swollen ankle ?

Better than walking back to the bus stop, getting on bus and walking back home from bus stop!

And her swollen ankle ?

Coffee, half an aspirin and a positive mental attitude will fix it! She's letting her employer down by not doing a full day's work, the lazy skiver. If the foot does remain swollen (unlikely once she's thinking positively) she can just wheel herself home on her office chair. No need not to put in a full day's grind!

Weeellokthen · Today 10:37

iminpain · Today 08:50

A man wouldn’t come in and would be in bed for a week resting the sprain!

That last bit is just untrue. What kind of men do you know 😂

madaboutpurple · Today 10:38

You will most likely be quite shaken up. With any luck your colleagues could take you to get medical help and then make sure you have things you need back at home. If you have a flask you could get your colleague to fill it with coffee and milk so you have a hot drink. you will also need food. Is there someone who could stay with you while you need a bit of help?

ruethewhirl · Today 10:44

Timeforachange26 · Today 08:18

Doesn't that depend on the job Not everyone can" sit at a desk". She may have a job where she's on her feet all day

And then there's getting home too, what if OP's ankle has come up like a balloon during the course of the day?

Sorry you're getting some unkind responses OP, all I can think is these must be coming from harassed managers who are projecting and, oddly, goofing off work to be on Mumsnet You've been injured and if it becomes impossible for you to be at work, you need to not be at work. Simples.

It’s already coming up like a balloon!!! I’m a bit more worried now but we’re so understaffed, I can’t go to a&e now!

OP posts:
spiderlight · Today 10:47

Oh, bless your heart. Falling over as an adult is a shock to the system - not like kids who can usually shake it off with a bit of distraction and a Peppa Pig plaster! There seems to be a transition from 'falling over' to 'having a fall'. I think you should try to arrange transport to a walk-in (hobble-in?) clinic in case you've fractured your ankle - my aunt stubbornly walked round for two weeks on an ankle that turned out to be so badly broken that it needed surgery.

iminpain · Today 10:49

My shoe and sock have had to go!

To call in sick?
OP posts:
Agapornis · Today 10:49

A&E is more important than being understaffed.

Your work first aider should be telling you to go to A&E. They need to check whether you've broken anything.

At the very least call 111.

jackstini · Today 10:51

You need to go to minor injuries and get it checked

As someone who had a serious ankle sprain that suddenly swelled up and had me in a wheelchair for 3 days and crutches for a few weeks due to ligament damage, don’t risk it

It was also incredibly painful (much worse than a break) and needed ice and elevation asap

How will you get home?

MatriarchCaz · Today 10:56

You deffo need to go and get it checked with that swelling x

iminpain · Today 11:08

I just can’t leave now! We’re so busy, I’ve had to sneak off to the toilet to take a minute as I’m in so much pain

OP posts:
Breadcat24 · Today 11:09

@iminpain Sounds nasty- sprains can be quite serious even if you have not broken anything. Another one saying you need it seen to.
Can someone give you a lift to hospital.
Please do not stand on it.
Rest it
Ice it
Compress it
Elevate it

spiderlight · Today 11:10

Honestly, you'll be off work for far longer if you soldier on and do more damage to it. Show it to your line manager/the first aider - it looks so painful and you really need to get it x-rayed.

Tink3rbell30 · Today 11:12

Oh bless you, you do need to go to minor injuries when you can.

Maisymouse2 · Today 11:19

It is unpleasant and hurtung yourself can make you feel quite off and qweazy.
Surely taking some time to freshen up get some pain relief ...see how you go.
Works only a job that can wait...health and well being is top priority.
I think you go with what you need to do for yourself.
The work guilt is unhelpful by other posts or theories works important.

HappyAmberTurtle · Today 11:24

In Australia if you injured yourself on the way to work you'd be covered under Occupational Health and Safety. You'd need to report it to your boss and fill in forms and get checked out medically. Work would pay for any expenses like physio, etc. I injured myself on the way home years ago and had weeks and weeks of physio and it was all covered by my employer's insurance. I worked for the govt.

HappyAmberTurtle · Today 11:25

I don't know if things have changed since it's over 20 years since I injured myself walking home from work.
