To call in sick?

iminpain · Today 07:50

I’m on my first day back at work after 10 days annual leave.

I was walking down the road this morning when I rolled my ankle and fell, I have horrific grazes on my knee and elbow, and my ankle is swelling up hugely and is painful even at rest.

AIBU to turn up, explain what’s happened and go home? When I’m cleaned up I could probably work but I’m in so much pain at the moment I feel sick, I have two fresh grazes that are about to bleed through my clothes and I don’t know whether the adrenaline carried me to the bus or if I can walk.

I’ve shown my manager. They said I can leave if I want but they wouldn’t recommend

Oh Op! Im sorry this has happened to you but I would definitely think about going to get it checked sooner rather than later!
What did your manager mean by 'he wouldn't recommend it'? Dont suppose you got that in writing did you?

AssassinsEyebrow · Today 12:32

You've had some unjustiably mean replies here @iminpain
You need to go to A&E - that ankle needs to be X rayed. Get a taxi there during your lunch break - your manager doesn't have a leg to stand on.

I've done just the same - and on the first day back after leave - like you I was in shock, sick and trembling, tried to power through. Eventually went to A&E where they were convinced it was broken - luckily the xray proved it was "just" a sprain. I still needed crutches for a week.

Severely broke my ankle a couple of years later - the sprain was much more painful!

Friendlygingercat · Today 12:33

Its not just the superficial injury of the skinned knee and grazed elbow. Falling over when you are an adult is humiliating and disorienting. When it happens to older people it can completely confuse them, I am speaking from experience as I am in my 80s and tripped in the garden last year. Although I did not go down completely I skinned a knee and was shaken for hours. It was not just the pain it was the shock of losing my balance.

Also not going into work immediately after a holiday/annual leave looks bad so the OPs tactic of going in and then maybe coming home again is a sound one. She cannot be accused of taking a sickie immediately after her leave.

Agreed. @iminpain send an email to your manager as you leave saying you know he didn't recommend you leave for A&E but you have to and that you will do your best to keep the trip limited to your lunch hour.

This covers you and shows him up- in writing.

THIS, OP.
Your manager might not recommend but he's not a doctor.
Your possible long-term foot issues, being on crutches, foot in a boot, weeks or months trying to get it sorted, against one day of inconvenience for him.

Fucks sake, what’s wrong with these managers?

”Wouldn’t recommend.” 🙄

That’s some nasty swelling, if you can’t have a shoe on or bear weight without wanting to cry, I’d go and get it checked out now. Sod your manager, they sound terrible.

What a strange response. Did they elaborate at all?

PissedOffAutistic · Today 12:52

You'll be no use to them if you don't get that seen and it gets worse and you need to take even more time off
Or put another way - FFS your health is more important than a job! Go to A&E!!

ArabellaScott · Today 12:56

I just can’t leave now! We’re so busy, I’ve had to sneak off to the toilet to take a minute as I’m in so much pain

In which case, go the fuck to A and E.

Maybe you were in shock first thing and not thinking straight, but it sounds/looks like you have done something that needs medical attention.

MellowCoralFinch · Today 12:57

Get it seen to. I am disabled and fell a few years ago. I was told I had a sprain in A&E. A few weeks later a consultant said it was actually broken and he couldn't believe I was walking (it was the worst pain I have ever felt). You could cause permanent damage if you leave it.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · Today 12:59

They are a shit manager! Go to A&E!!!

Hmmmmwineandchocs · Today 13:01

I hope you can go soon and find it what’s going on. Hope the pain eases don’ soon.

WattThreeWords · Today 13:11

You need to get your ankle checked out OP. My sister did the same with her ankle and got an avulsion fracture

WannaSweetie · Today 13:11

NRTFT but OP deffo go to small injuries clinic or similar. I did something the same years ago & didn’t bother, wish I had as I’d broken bones in my foot
Edit to say - 25 years later the solution was to cut the top of my foot open & break & reset the bones - I declined

bluebirdssing · Today 13:13

I think that needs checking

iminpain · Today 13:18

I’m off to a&e, much to the chagrin of my manager

If you are in that much pain could you have broken it? Good you are going to A&E.

Your wrist is more likely to be an issue than your leg. We automatically put our hands out when we fall and that means all your weight on your wrist. Very common injury.

I didn't automatically put my hands out when I fell over a few months ago. Admittedly, it was after nearly a bottle of vino!!😀

Coffee, half an aspirin and a positive mental attitude will fix it! She's letting her employer down by not doing a full day's work, the lazy skiver. If the foot does remain swollen (unlikely once she's thinking positively) she can just wheel herself home on her office chair. No need not to put in a full day's grind!

I don’t recommend wheeling home on an office chair. I travelled about a mile and a half on one once. On the plus side, I had a good time and didn’t drop any of my kebab, but on the downside, the chair had no wheels remaining by the time I reached my destination.

Jokes aside though, OP, I really don’t think you can be disciplined for leaving work to seek emergency medical treatment. A&E is likely to be a long wait though, would someone be able to meet you there with snacks/phone charger etc? (Partner/friend/family member).

Waitingfordoggo · Today 13:24

Ah, I see you’re now heading to A&E, good.
