Not content with making us enemy No.1 with Russia, pissing off the USA, rising tensions with Argentina … they’ve now managed to make an enemy of Isreal too.

Dont even get me started on the hostility rising within our own country!

WTF are Labour playing at??

Long overdue, and each of those push backs are principled and justified.

Backedoffhackedoff · 08/09/2026 16:31

Russian propaganda- they go round to every Ukrainian ally in Europe saying they are about to destroy them. 5 years into the war everyone should realise that.

being firmly anti Isreal has worked out ok for the Irish.

the argentinians aren’t important

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 08/09/2026 16:32

You want to appease Russia? Russia? Putin? Seriously?
You're either nuts, stupid, or being paid by Russia. Or something else I can't quite put my finger on.
But it ain't nice.
Traitorous! That's it.

NolanChanceJustLikeTheWeatherNSoul · 08/09/2026 16:33

All three examples should never be appeased.
Trumps a fucking nut case he needs to hear the word no more often.

TheFlandersPigeon · 08/09/2026 16:33

Yabu. There's no sensible alternative to the positions we're taking on Russia and Argentina, and Trump is too unpredictable to make compliance for its own sake a good idea. The only one where we could realistically have made a different choice is the Israeli settlements, leaving aside the rights and wrongs of it for a moment, and you'd make that point better if not tying it to obvious nonsense about Russia.

hattie43 · 08/09/2026 16:35

They are making a hash of international relationships. It’s like they’re trying to alienate our allies and that makes us vulnerable. I feel at the moment the only people they want to encourage is the Muslim world .

Ducketta · 08/09/2026 16:36

I agree that none of these countries should be appeased. The Gaza situation is complicated and I find people that bang on about Gaza the whole time tiresome but the West Bank is absolutely outrageous, with Israeli settlers just acting as terrorists. Horrifying.

olivepicanto · 08/09/2026 16:36

Well done to them. Do you think we should be subservient to war criminals and monsters ?

Well, they’re inexperienced because they’d been out of the leader loop for a while. 🤷‍♀️

100% this. I'm glad we are pushing back against these types of countries instead of capitulation and appeasement. It's about time.

Hahahaha.

SoSoLong · 08/09/2026 16:40

So you'd much rather be led by a spineless government who never stand up against anyone? OK then...

Fully agree. The Israeli lunatic fringe settlers and Palestinian jihadists are both terrorists.

meganorks · 08/09/2026 16:41

So you think we should be pandering to war mongering nut jobs and those found guilty of genocide by the UN? Nice.

HandPulledNoodles · 08/09/2026 16:43

YABVU. We have to have red lines somewhere. Russia does this all the time threatening and intimidating other countries, increasingly emboldened by Trump’s approach. Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and the continued expansion of settlements are abhorrent too, likewise emboldened by Trump..

ilovesooty · 08/09/2026 16:46

Oh it's another Labour government bashing thread. I'm sure people will soon be gathering to join in. Just how is the current government particularly responsible for rising tensions with Argentina?

TheFlandersPigeon · 08/09/2026 16:51

I actually get the principle of why people want to appease a nuclear power like Russia, but it doesn't work. Giving them what they want so they'll leave us alone isn't one of the available options. It's like wanting negative calorie cake. You can't have it.

And surely everyone knows that Argentinian governments start whining about the Falklands whenever they're trying to distract the electorate from their shit economy? It wasn't Cameron's fault when Kirchner did it in the 2010s, it's not Burnham's fault now, it wasn't Starmer's fault when the footballers held up that tragic cope banner at the world cup.

11AndCounting · 08/09/2026 16:51

Well, if Russia and the US want to curry favor with Labour and buy influence, they shouldn't be directing all their resources towards Reform "UK".

DontBuyAnotherBook · 08/09/2026 17:05

I am kind of glad they aren't turning a blind eye to Israeli settlers just murdering and taking land. Also Spain and France plus other countries are doing the same.

I take it you blame the British government for "worsening tensions" with Germany in 1939 ?

JassyRadlett · 08/09/2026 17:29

There is a difference between "peace" and "temporary peacefulness". Sometimes the former means giving up on a little of the latter.

Targeted sanctions are an entirely proportionate response to Israel's illegal actions in the West Bank. The Occupied Territories and the steady encroachment into them are an ongoing barrier to any future peace. The Israeli government knows that a two state solution is hugely undermined by increasing occupation. Saying that as long as they maintain the occupation, we will make it more difficult for them to profit by it is exactly how a rules-based international system is supposed to work.

Mark Carney is currently leading the way in terms of principled, proportionate responses to outrageous, damaging actions by other countries. I wouldn't be sad if the UK followed that example rather than desperately trying to mitigate the damage caused by Brexit by never offending anyone, ever. A collectively commitment to the rules-based order is likely to have better long-term results than craven supplication.

Interesting that you put us at Labour's door. How many of the five Prime Ministers we've had since the Ukraine invasion have been Labour?

Bringemout · 08/09/2026 17:34

Russia - I don’t care, I look forward to Ukraine pushing them out of it’s terrotries entirely
USA- unfortunately the relationship does actually matter and has a material i pact, chagos islands deal hurts us first and foremost and I don’t understand why on earth we are doing it.
Argentina - is at fault here
Israel, we export 3.5 billion to them Including 100’s of millions of pharmaceuticals, targeting produce from the west bank will affect Palestinian employment, plus we actually do have intelligence co-operation with them. To be frank this could hurt us a lot more than it hurts them,

Fundamentally Britain should out British interest, British defence and British economic interests first.
.

JacknDiane · 08/09/2026 17:36

Thank god Britain is finally calling out the blatant abuses happening in the West Bank.

The problem with that argument is that “British interests” can’t just mean avoiding any action that might carry a cost. Sometimes defending international law and setting boundaries is in Britain’s long-term strategic interest.

JassyRadlett · 08/09/2026 17:39

Heartening to see the other countries lining up alongside Britain on this issue. The Carney/Burnham/Macron statement feels like another step towards a new potential diplomatic and security alliance.
