Is the trans kids trend over? Aibu to wonder what happened to the kids caught up in it in the 2010s?

As we know the period from the mid 10s to early 20s has been described as “woke 1” and is apparently “over”.
When I was at secondary school in the 2010s, there were four trans kids in my year group (3 FTMs and one mtf) the one mtf was autistic and in foster care. I was always nice to them and kept my views to myself but I’m wondering what’s going on with them now, they’ve completely dropped off the radar. None of them have social media accounts and no one else I went to school with had heard from them.

My daughter has just entered year 5 and doesn’t know any trans kids or even what one is, my neighbours teenage children don’t know any either and they’re the age I was when four classmates transitioned.

I know there’s a lot of teachers on mumsnet would this be your experience too?

Ive tried googling this but everyone seems to have moved on from it I think there may be a forgotten generation who’s lives have been ruined

I work in youth work and I had 6 girls who all formed one friendship group. Only one presented in a more masculine way way as a teen. During lockdown I heard that all six were now trans.
I really prayed that they would not do anything permanent.

Only one seems to have social media and has had TS. I have no idea what happened to the rest and that makes me worried and sad. I hope they are living a lovely life away from it all.

Secretsquirrel2 · 07/09/2026 20:56

@beeble347 my daughter has birth name on GCSE and preferred male name on degree modules.

Hedgehogforshort · 07/09/2026 21:42

It is all to my simple mind daft.

You are your mind and your body it is one.

we have always had some very strange men who think they are women for a variety of reasons, who ought to stay at home hoovering and baking in a dress, and not bother anyone.

Stonewall et al let a genie out the bottle, that is the sexual proclivities of some men.

The rest is just a social contagion, a way of dealing with sexuality, abuse and other belongingness issues.

in summary there is no such thing as trans, true trans or queer, or any other nonsense.

We humans are male or female, gay or straight.

End of.

Err, none.

Yep.

Yeah I feel like non binary is more of a thing now, especially among girls. It also seems to be region, and, to an extent, school specific within areas- my friend’s dd is at a school in Kent where it’s super common whereas at my dc’s school there are literally none who present as trans or non binary ( similar size and demographic of the two schools otherwise and both schools allow all students to wear a “trouser and tie” or “skirt and blouse” uniform). The non binary girls I know basically look like Emo kids from the 90’s ( nothing new under the sun).

@EricTheHalfASleeve interesting- I guess the other thing is that essentially there’s currently a “backlog” of cases as legally changing gender not been around for that long. Will be interesting to know what the numbers are when that has gone through the system.

When you say backlog, do you mean people waiting for surgery? I didn’t even know they actually did that on the NHS.

My brother is MtoF trans. He’s 37 and has been living as a female and been transitioning since he was 19/20. He has had boobs done and got all his meds online as GP/NHS said no.

He changed his name by deedpoll when he was around 22/23.

I refer to him as him because I don’t see him anymore and it seems silly calling him a she when he is a he. When we were in contact I didn’t refer to him as he, just by the name he chose which could be male or female.

My kids are teens and my youngest, a girl, has a close friend who was always a bit of a tomboy. She recently got her chair chopped short, in a typical boy cut, and dresses in boys clothes. I don't think shes gay, she certainly hasnt said anything. Not once have I heard the words non binary or trans mentioned. She's just a girl who likes to present herself that way. Who knows maybe she is gay. Maybe not. I really hope that it's come full circle and we can accept girls like for exactly what they are.

Some non-binary people use medication and/or surgery to make them more androgynous.

A friend of mine was telling me about her dd who did the same thing.
That was a few years ago and everyone told her then that she was just trans. She should accept it because it’s ok etc… By everyone, I mean friends, people in her class, none of them were trans themselves.

She is just a teen girl who had enough of people constantly touching her long hair 😂

It used to be normal for girls to have short hair.

Thesearenotthedroids · 09/09/2026 10:31

I am sure that pixie cuts must be back soon. The ones like gwenyth paltro, posh spice, overly gelled at the back so it's crispy with the longer bit at the front.

Humerdu · 09/09/2026 10:47

Yes my ASD child just didn’t like the sensation of long hair. She’s fairly sick of people asking her if she’s trans or gay. Trans has dragged us all back to the age of tiresome stereotypes. Can’t we just have short hair without it being a scandal?

Themsofcoffee · 09/09/2026 13:34

Dd is 21 and there was one trans child at school.

She really seemed to develop an interest in it at 6th form. After lockdown .
Now knows a fair few non binary ppl (girls).
Agree with the pp who thought lockdown may have affected this.

To me its like every generation do need something to rebel against. I can remember when punks were seen as completely anti social and dangerous, yet the trans stuff is potentially more harmful .

Yes. The difference between punks / goths and trans is that the former were seen to be "rebels" and shared on and offline between peer groups.

With trans, society has unforgivably allowed self interested adults - predominantly men - to push their agenda directly to children. They self identified as "experts" and in the early days Trans Identified Men paraded themselves in front of groups of children in schools selling their life story and beliefs. This morphed into them writing policies and influencing not just pastoral care and the curriculum, but also influencing anything woman related - maternity care/ menopause / breastfeeding etc.

The overreach has been staggering.

We were so naive in not recognising the implications but before we knew it these groups were lecturing society that Transwomen are women, that men are entitled to women's sport , you're a bigot if think women and girls should have single sex changing rooms and that mentally vulnerable children with uncomfortable pubertal bodies must need a sex change.

Thinking of trends: I have a feeling more people may have been harassed and terrorised in this country for being Goths than for being trans. I may be wrong, but that is the impression I have. We ought to have a Goth Day of Remembrance for Sophie Lancaster, in any case.

I’m sure someone will mention the murder of Brianna Ghey. They tried saying she was killed for being trans but the kids who did it were actually her friends before and the girl was just extremely fucked up and obsessed with murder.

I remember poor Sophie Lancaster, being of an age to remember it happening.
To add to the comments regarding the promotion of trans ideology, the BBC promoted it very heavily in their children's programs as well as everywhere else, Stonewall got into every institution in the UK and trained everyone in Stonewall Law and charged huge amounts for it. The government gave them huge amounts of tax payer's money. The Denton's Document was produced with the stated intention of getting men into women's prisons, because nobody cares about them, and the rest would follow. Mermaids and Susie Green were pushing puberty blockers for children. Women who tried to raise the alarm were threatened, silenced, sacked, arrested, dragged through court. Governments supported and went along with it, unions still do. It is still happening.

Silverbirchleaf · 09/09/2026 14:20

@endofthelinefinally

”unions still do.”

That scares me. For example , Unison et al didn’t attend the Labour Women’s Conference, so it neglected to represent the largest proportion of its membership, for a few (men).

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 09/09/2026 14:24

I was also thinking of Brianna Ghey, whose murder is always attributed to her having been trans; I did get the feeling at the time that the reason for that murder was the desire on the part of one of her killers to commit a murder rather than Brianna being trans, and another, non-trans, person would have done just as well to be her victim. (The other killer seems to have gone along with the one who'd tried to kill Brianna once already but failed and not been suspected. A sort of male Myra Hindley.) Whereas there seems not the least doubt that Sophie Lancaster and her boyfriend were attacked by strangers because of the way they looked and not because their attackers wanted to murder one of a pre-selected group of people known to them.

The inquiry into Brianna Ghey's murder found exactly what you have said. The killers had a list of potential victims and Brianna was 3rd or 4th on the list. It could easily have been one of the others.

Brianna was killed because of being vulnerable. Trans identifying kids are vulnerable for a number of reasons. Not just because they are trans.

The unit Brianna and the killers were in was really inappropriate because it mixed the most dangerous kids with the most vulnerable kids.

Safeguarding really should put the vulnerable non violent kids in a separate unit to the troubled kids with a history of violence.

This also came up in the report which was critical of the set up at the school for this reason.

There's plenty of kids who end up at this particular unit who don't have a history of violence. They were done a massive disservice with this because honestly any kid with those kid of problems isn't going to do well around the violent kids for fairly obvious reasons.

The whole case is really frustrating because it focuses on phones and trans but wildly, not this basic safeguarding that seems pretty fucking obvious when you actually think about it - why put the kids who bully the shit out of kids with the kids with anxiety, school refusal and histories of being bullied in the same goddam place?!

endofthelinefinally · 09/09/2026 16:52

@RedToothBrush
I agree 100% and sadly I have personal experience of this kind of thing. IMO putting vulnerable kids into the same place as the bullies, the disturbed and the violent ones is criminal.

The irony of the trans agenda actually cementing and entrenching gender stereotypes is huge. After several generations of women campaigning to break free of these baseless stereotypes, a bunch of men in dresses and wigs decide they have certain feelz and suddenly a girl with short hair is actually a boy. It’s ridiculous.

Yes, I followed the trial closely and that’s a good summary. The girl had been watching violent content on the dark web.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 11/09/2026 14:24

But it is "trans was murdered because of being trans" because the victim was trans, even though the trans status seems to have been largely irrelevant. Bad luck to know a seriously disturbed adolescent who had an obsession with murder, but that would have been the case whether the victim had been trans or not.

Brianna is the only trans victim of murder in the UK that I can find listed at Wikipedia, but I think they may have missed a few; I have a feeling it may be as many as seven per decade this century. If she is the only one, the case that trans people are more at risk than any other sector of the population is definitely not proven, especially given that her sexuality seems to have been irrelevant.
