AIBU to think moustaches rarely improve a man's appearance?

There is no man on earth who’s looks are improved by the addition of facial hair.

Can someone please tell the young lads with the 1970s ‘taches that they look bloody awful?

Oh definitely a hairy chest though is better than smooth!

Weeellokthen · 05/09/2026 08:33

My dad had a tache my whole life. Very handsome man with the most beautiful blue eyes.
Did'nt look (paeodoish at all) whatever that means 🙄

On the whole I would agree. However - I give you Rowan Atkinson in Blackadder II. I think facial hair improved him and to me it was only in that role that he was attractive.

He had a whole beard combo though.

A moustache on its works on some men better than others. Some good examples above, especially 1980s Midge Ure, but may I also suggest this fine specimen?

Oooh, no, I love a proper 70s style droopy moustache! You just don't see them anymore, sadly.

Full beard is fine. These 70s taches on young men though - yuk! They just look spivvy.

Ferro · 05/09/2026 08:43

A moustache is fine but what I can't abide is a moustache combined with three days worth of stubble. Bizarrely a lot of men are wearing this look now. It just looks dirty.

CarpetSlipper · 05/09/2026 08:45

I don’t like a moustache on its own but stubble or a short beard always looks better than clean shaven in my opinion.

DemBonesDemBones · 05/09/2026 08:53

Never seen a man that doesn’t look better with facial hair.

Disagree. Some do.
Beards on the other handske men.look older.

That rather depends, on my 70 year old husband, it makes him look younger.

I give you Clark Gable

He’d look hot without it let’s face it. I agree OP, it makes them look like creeps.

TotaleclipseinFrance · 05/09/2026 09:20

I saw a young guy with a moustache, mullet and 80s style neon jumper the other day. I was a child in the 80s.

Odd as it looked like he'd gone through a time machine.

Was he older or younger than me? 😁

ToadRage · 05/09/2026 09:28

I don't like a mustache on its own, but facial hair can suit done people as long as it is kept tidy and maintained. My brother doesn't do any kind of maintenance and his beard is scruffy and he looks like a tramp. However my husbands beard is trimmed and shaped and it looks great.

My DH looks amazing with his beard, he started it about 8 years ago when he’d had an op and couldn’t be bothered to shave. It’s possible I’m biased though.

DH has one too ever since I’ve known him. I’ve seen photos of him without and told him if he ever shaves it off I’m divorcing him!! 🤣
My Dad has always had a beard so I guess to me it’s normal.

montysmaw · 05/09/2026 15:13

I generally hate facial hair but don't mind some stubble.

Except.......rewatching Schitts Creek and there is a character called Mutt. Full mountain man beard. Despite that he looks damned hot.
I kept thinking, wow, lose the beard and he would be nuclear if he looks that good with it.

Several episodes later he is clean shaven.
And utterly ordinary with a week chin and little rosebud mouth!
That's my one and only hot hairy though.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 05/09/2026 20:48

Tom Selleck and Aidan Turner are much improved by a tache so I have to disagree. Also George Michael with facial hair was a thing of beauty.

Freddie Mercury’s ‘tache is exactly what I mean. Utterly vile. But he’s not trying to attract another female so that’s ok.

Maybe it’s something to do with the rising number of people who prefer living alone that being in a couple. These guys just aren’t trying to attract anyone whatsoever and so the ‘tache is a way to ensure girls get the message. A sort of clue someone is asexual.

This is one of the funniest things I’ve read on here in a long time 😆

Yes spivvy

like walker in Dads army

Remember Paul Rutherford in FGTH with his teacher

Disturbia81 · 05/09/2026 21:03

Many men need moustaches and beards to hide small lips or weak chins, even if they didn’t I think most men are improved with facial hair, like most women look better with makeup.

HoppityBun · 05/09/2026 21:04

Agree OP. I’m waiting it out and just hope that I live long enough.

As an aside, it always bemuses me that you can instantly identify when a man with a moustache is American. They have a particular look.

BoarBrush · 05/09/2026 21:06

Sorry for bringing the tone down but I can't ever imagine a moustache wafting around my fanny. No thanks.

TroysMammy · 05/09/2026 21:06

I hate all facial hair and also long hair on a man. Even worse is when they are old and have a skinny grey ponytail bleurgh.

We have several round where I live. Unfortunately, both they and I travel by bus and I’ve had the misfortune to sit behind them. It makes me heave. Can they not see where their pony tailed hair parts to show the bald bit underneath. What are they on?

Springpartyideas · 05/09/2026 21:09

@BoarBrush am glad you mentioned it as it was what I was thinking as I read through this thread 🤣. I wonder if it heightens the experience at all?!
