Child sleeps on a mattress on the floor

Went for dinner and a playdate with my Ds new friend. Mum is very nice, child lovely. Ds called me upstairs to show me his friends lego building and his bed was a mattress on the floor, is this normal? Mum very bohemian, house very messy and not well looked after-I am not judging and these things don't bother me, my house needs painting and some new furniture, so I get it, but is a mattress as a bed ok?

Have you never heard of floor beds? Lots of kids sleep in them 😊

If the mattress was in bad shape, dirty, stained, ripped, or lacking bedding, that aould be a problem.

Mattress looking clean and in good shape, with bedding - probably a Montessori thing, or the child has been rolling off a higher bed and this was safer.

@Ovenpizzasarerank You are judging and it does bother you and you're posting on social media about it for further dissection of the mother's ability to parent.

When my youngest coslept (terrible sleeper), I did a mattress on the floor. It’s v comfy and good for your back. I still use a mattress in the spare room and air the mattress. My back is v healthy

a few years ago I realised it was a bit odd and bought a bed and I hated it as it creaked. When it broke I went back to the mattress

I am amazed at what people judge.

There is a US parenting influencer called Busy Toddler and for years her youngest child slept in a BOX. Like a giant box that an appliance was delivered in. He is quite likely ND or at the least very quirky, and it was his thing. As she often pointed out, it was harming no one so they went with it.

How is there more airflow on a divan?

One of mine did this for a while!

The actual base is slightly off the ground and some divans have have breathable fabric over the top but admittedly not all do

Maybe a bed tent would be better if can be afforded?

He really preferred the box. Until it fell apart.

He then went through a phase of sleeping - not joking - in a dog bed.

We have tried - a normal bed, a floor bed, a bunk bed, a box, a dog bed.

Really at this point, I don't care exactly where he sleeps. Weirdly just as I got to that point, he has started to sleep in his normal bed again!

But my point is - it isn't necessarily neglect, some kids are just quirky

My husband and I lived in a £4m house for several years with a mattress on the floor in our room. No kids at time. A Haastens to add to the absurdity of it. Our bed was broken by movers and we were both working insane hours and just never got around to it because didn't see the issue? We did have sheets and things though...we had a 2x weekly cleaner so maybe she aired it? 10 years on and the mattress now in a proper bed (which I honestly find less comfortable as husband likes a very high bed) zero issues with mattress. Think many replies are a bit precious. Also - this sounds strongly to me like a bet wetter.

Or he's a chronic bedwetter. Sheets are in the wash and she was trying to save face for him with a pillow and a throw. What 8 year old uses a throw ?

A throw is a posh word for blanket? My kids have them.

Exactly, throw, blanket, bedspread, much of a muchness, not sure why people are getting hung up on the word 'throw' but wouldnt presumably if OP had said blanket

For the past 6 weeks Ive been sleeping downstairs with a xmas throw!! Rather than the duvet because its lighter.

Poor me.

My son has ASD and during a very unsettled evening a few years ago he broke his bed by stomping on all the slats then threw them out the window! He had a mattress for several months after that a) because I am a single mum and didn’t have money just sat there for new beds and b) to make it safer for him. He was really struggling at school (this was before/during his diagnosis) and this was the space he would “unwind” in and I didn’t want to get another bed until we were through this bad patch. Is it normal? No, but not awful at all!

What on earth suggests to you that this child is a bedwetting?

We have 18 pages of posts going after this mother, are people really going to start on 8 year old ?

If you’re real you really need to find something else to do with your brain. Read a book, listen to a podcast, take up a new hobby. Ideally broaden your horizons with some travel or friends outside your extremely narrow themed bedroom circles.
