Child sleeps on a mattress on the floor

Went for dinner and a playdate with my Ds new friend. Mum is very nice, child lovely. Ds called me upstairs to show me his friends lego building and his bed was a mattress on the floor, is this normal? Mum very bohemian, house very messy and not well looked after-I am not judging and these things don't bother me, my house needs painting and some new furniture, so I get it, but is a mattress as a bed ok?

The original Montessori floor bed rationale was to encourage very young children to be able to climb on and off the bed independently to rest when they wanted to.
It certainly wasn’t intended for 8 year olds or even 5 year olds. Low beds were advocated as soon as the child was big enough to climb in independently and proper beds by the time the child was 6 or 7.

In western culture a mattress on the floor with no proper bed linen that can be washed regularly is not normal because it isn’t hygienic. The mattress should be propped up often to allow air to circulate.
If you feel the child is otherwise happy with friends and looked after properly, then I see no reason to comment further to anybody else about it.

OP - I get what you're saying about the decor. It's not about co-ordinated themes, it's about the room feeling like someone has acknowledged the child's personality and likes and made an effort to try to incorporate something - even just a colour or a picture - to make them feel it's 'their' room.

I don't think a mattress on the floor is great. I think no sheet is quite grim. But everything else suggests child is well fed, has toys and is loved.

People have different priorities and maybe the mum doesn't even realise that it's a bit 'less than'. Maybe they are too busy making pasta necklaces, pressing flowers and climbing trees.... I know that sounds a bit arsey, but I mean that as a 'catch all' for a slightly different but equally valid way or making DC feel loved.

It will eventually go mouldy lying straight on the floor but I’d assume it was a temporary measure

It's it a mattress or a futon? Just asking because futons are made for sleeping on the floor. If it's a mattress maybe they saw a futon and thought they could do the same with a mattress 😆

If you walked into my DDs room on any day you’d have a high chance of finding no bedding because she wets the bed reasonably regularly so I strip in the morning and make it up again at bedtime. There’s just not enough information known to make a judgement either way here. Too many possible explanations.

That's exactly what we did, although it was more likely me who would fall out! DS, like our current dog, liked to sleep between us, across the bed and he'd push me out. We had a mattress on the floor for quite a while, no mould and it wasn't cold as someone else mentioned it might be.

I think you are over thinking this. One of the happiest families I ever met, lived on a narrowboat next to ours. 3 kids, 2 dogs, 45 foot boat the kids were strong, healthy, outdoorsy. No telly, slept on matrasses on the floor.
I think you need to remember that about 50% of the worlds children sleep on the floor, sometimes on nothing more that a piece of cardboard.
This child is well fed and happy.
Let it go.
To report this mother would be very ill advised and ruin a friendship.

Exactly, see Futon, which is an upscale mattress on the floor, maybe the sheets and duvet were in the wash. Btw my boyfriend and I slept on a mattress on the floor as students for years, and it was second hand (yuk) my back aches more now than it did then.

Why not have a look on your local Freecycle group and see if anyone is giving away a single bedstead for her

In our nursery all children sleep on a floor matress for lunch naps! So when my children are home they often ask me.for.a floor matress to sleep on!
So they have beds, but when they need comforting or sick nothing works better than a floor mattress.
Most of the world sleep on the floor btw, they fold and store it away when not used

Myself, my husband & my kids slept on mattresses/blow up beds for ages while we gradually upgraded. Nobody died. It's about proorities

I'm glad someone said it this is all too common in 2026. Parents putting their vices or possibly hobbies ahead of children

I'm sure everyone has seen the mother or father dressed very well, expensive handbags or gaming rigs and their children are basically in rags poorly fitted clothing

Though funnily, I had exactly the OPPOSITE reaction to this thread.

I was thinking so many homes where the parents drink heavily, smoke (cigarettes or worse), feed their children crap, sit them in front of screens or let them run round the streets and generally give them no attention or quality input and this mum, who is giving her dc playdates, buying him Lego and taking a genuine interest in the model he has made is getting lynched on MN for prioritising all that over a piece of junky furniture from IKEA (which let's face it is what ends up in most kids' rooms) that half the world doesn't bother with anyway.

Why is there anything wrong with sleeping on a mattress on the floor? Literally the same as a bed frame but safer for a little kid
