Does removing the coil hurt?

I had it put in under general anaesthetic and hear conflicting theories on removal . I want mine taken out but im scared!

I had mine out today - took longer to get undressed! Fast and felt virtually nothing! I go to a sexual health clinic so they’re v v experienced!

Wow this makes interesting reading! It was horrendous for me. I think it can depend on where your cervix is positioned.

Personally for me it was painless having it removed and took seconds. Having it put in was a whole other ball game and horrendous

It's not overkill if you're experiencing pain.

My DD had here removed with gas and air. She had three previous appointments to have it removed in clinic but found it too painful and stressful.

Everyone is different and there's no shame in needing extra pain relief.

It doesn’t hurt at all to remove it.

I never had a GA to put one in, I’m not even sure that I had any anaesthetic and it was agonising. One of them was fitted by some male professor in London who’d been involved in developing them and he was a brute. I found out later that others had a similar experience. It really made me wonder why men go into that area of work.

But removing is a breeze. Mine were removed by nurses, the most recent one at the GP. And I’ve not had children btw

Have you had kids @Sc0tlandbye cos that makes all the difference. I've had no kids and having mine removed hurt like fuck but momentary only.

I found removal more painful than insertion, but neither were agonising, am glad this is my last one though 😂

It depends because some people have existing issues, just like some people have problems with smears/hysteroscopy, and others don't. Not helpful, I know.

If it does help, it's more like the first of those than the second, but that's only one woman's view.

Mine only came partly out though and it was a weekend, so I pulled it all the way out myself. It genuinely was uncomfortable rather than painful.
(As opposed to the "uncomfortable" that hcp's use to describe unbridled agony...)

I need mine out but I can't get anytime free to do it. Very tempted to just give the strings a yank!

Like many medical things, it varies.

Some come out quickly and easily without pain, some with more trouble. My last one was embedded and the arms broke off. It was painful and unpleasant. I’m due a hysteroscopy to have the bits removed under GA.

My (excellent, very experienced) consultant was quite shocked. He had never had it happen before.

Who is getting GA for insertion or removal?! Is this the UK??? I can’t imagine them giving GA for putting it in. I had a paracetamol, felt like shit and went back to work

I have always insisted on a GA for insertion. My cervix is scarred and shortened from previous surgeries, and my uterus is tilted, making the cervix hard to access.
I decided that I’d try removal without sedation this time, and it didn’t work out well (see my post above).

Please have the sensitivity to realise that some women may be undergoing procedures that allow for a coil to be inserted as an add on, not the main event

I’m not annoyed at you? I’m just asking which country this is in (not to you) Someone else mentioned they insisted on GA. I wouldn’t have been able to insist on nothing in my appt.

The first time I had a Mirena the removal was horrendous but that’s because the strings had migrated upwards through my cervix and wrapped themselves around the
device. Very long story.

The second time I had a Mirena it came out in about 2 seconds.

When I had my coil inserted, it was awful. I had the whole ‘cervical shock’ thing and I fainted (not uncommon for me). They kept me there for ages checking my blood pressure and my heart rate. I was so upset afterwards and embarrassed which I know is ridiculous. I had it done at my GP with a very experienced doctor and nurse.
When I had it removed they were ready for me! But… I didn’t feel a thing.
I’ve heard so many horror stories since and I felt better to know I wasn’t alone but also… why are women putting up with this? It’s not the same for everyone I know. But I’m known for fainting and low blood pressure/tachycardia issues so I wish they’d warned me.
Don’t be brave… advocate for yourself if you’re worried!

Sexual health clinic. They deal with them all the time so know exactly what they are doing and no problems.

I barely felt a thing when I had mine removed. It was really the slightest little tickle. I'd had an awful experience having it fitted - went into cervical shock - so I was really nervous about removal, but it was nothing. Don't worry!

Total non- event for me. I’ve had two normal sized babies vaginally, so this makes sense. It’s like passing a canteloupe and then passing a neatly folded up Kirby grip - no comparison.

Please ladies don't do what I did. I just left it for way too long to have mine removed/replaced. I think it was there for about 15 years! I know I know. So when the dear nurse tried to remove it the strings just snapped off! Many different health professionals tried to get at it but to no avail! I especially remember the guy who resembled the Honey Monster with hands like shovels. I think they had money on who would succeed in getting the damn thing out of me!

In the end they send me home with cervix dilating drugs and I was told to come back later. I was sitting on the bus home with what felt like the early stages of labour! When I returned they gave me a quick shot of local and popped it out!

Even with all the issues, I didn't really feel any real discomfort. Just rather embarrassed at all the randoms having a good rummage up there!!

I've had four removed. One was a few seconds of pain and then mild cramping, 2 were momentary discomfort, and one was really horrible, but I think that was the bloke who did it. It's the only time I've been in stirrups, and he was very much wham bam. Everyone else (all female) took their time, were careful to make sure I was as relaxed as possible and it made it much easier.

The GP couldn't find the threads and that bit was uncomfortable but not painful. Referred to gynae who was amazing and got it out but it hurt.

Mine had gone awol. The strings were nowhere to be found and they were talking about me having to go to hospital to have it removed.
The doctor gave me instructions to cough hard while she rooted around. Amazingly she managed to retrieve it. Even in those difficult circumstances it wasn’t painful (I had taken ibuprofen beforehand) and I am eternally grateful to her for managing to spare me any further procedures with all the embarrassment that would entail.
