Does removing the coil hurt?

I had it put in under general anaesthetic and hear conflicting theories on removal . I want mine taken out but im scared!

Not at all. Fitting is uncomfortable but removal is nothing. The nurse asked me to cough and it slipped out.

It depends. A nurse tried to remove mine and it hurt too much to let her continue. She went to get the most experienced person available who spent ages just looking at it. She then whisked it out and I didn't feel a thing.

When I had my inserted many years ago it was agony like instant contractions. I asked the same question of my female GP on removal and she assured me it didn’t hurt.

She was correct, removal is easy, quick and pain free.

I think it's fast and hopefully not painful IF the practitioner is expert, so it's worth doing some research. I paid to go to a specialist women's health service that guarantees local anaesthetic just to be sure.

Frankly I don't trust a GP I've never met before to do this stuff.

That was a removal and insertion of a new one though.

I put off having mine removed for absolutely ages, having had it put in under general seven years earlier.
I was terrified and almost in tears. It was like having a smear, but one very quick tug and it was all over. I didn't believe the doctor until I saw her dangling it! Whole process took seconds.
Got myself in a right old state for nothing!

Both mine came out in clots! Yes there was cramping but that was more the bleeding.

It was painful going in but seemed to come out too easily in my case 😂

I had a hysterectomy instead!

I experienced a cramp for a few seconds and that was it, hurt more having it put in, but again lasts for seconds, had mine out a couple of months ago

I had the threads cut so taking it out was very unpleasant but surely no need for a general.

I went into something like shock, hurt like hell and it was a bit like a bucket of cold water and an electric shock. Idiot woman wanted to proceed with inserting new one while I couldn’t even sit up. It made me re evaluate contraception going forward, decided excellent time to have second baby, born 12 months later

I’ve had two removed. One took a while as the string was so short that she had to dig around but it wasn’t painful, just uncomfortable.
The second came out easily and didn’t hurt at all.

Where do you go to have it removed? When i had it put in it was at hospital during GA for something different

I felt a sharp pinch for a split second and felt slightly woozy for a couple of minutes afterwards. Much less to worry about than I expected.

I've had two removed; I found it uncomfortable (to have the speculum, the same uncomfortable pressure as a smear), then there was a short sharp pain when they actually came out and very mild cramping afterwards. It should be over quite quickly for you! I think both times were under 5 mins from start to finish and I have a tricky cervix (apparently)

Momentarily. There should be a nurse at your gp who deals with smears etc. Removal is usually less traumatic than insertion,

Usually in SH clinic, although some GPs may be trained to do it.
My removal was unpleasant but very quick. Honestly, only marginally worse than smear test.

My GP took mine out. She just asked me to cough, gave a quick tug and it was out. Totally painless.

I went to the one GP at my surgery who is trained and she had a fiddle but it wasn't coming out easily so she sent me to the sexuall health clinic. The more experienced doctor there got me to cough & whipped it out no probs! Apparently you can't cough & clench your cervix at the same time, who knew? :-)

Anyway my point is if you have a sexual health clinic or somewhere that specialises go there as they have the most experience.

I've had 2, both hurt like hell going in, the first when removed was no worse than removing an underfilled tampon 🤢 sorry for the comparison it's all I could compare it to

Didn’t hurt when I had mine removed. It was a strange sensation but no pain at all.

Mine was a very sharp pain for a couple of seconds, then that was it. I did feel a bit wobbly afterwards for a couple of minutes as it was quite a sharp pain (and I had taken painkillers before I went and have a good high pain threshold).

I do have an oddly tilted cervix though and always have to raise my bum so they can see for smears etc so this might have effected the removal.

No. Didn't hurt at all

My removal was completely painless however when it came to reinserting a new one my cervix spasmed and after 15 minutes of pretty high level pain they essentially gave up- I was referred for insertion via sedation instead which was (obviously) a painless experience- i am on HRT though so had to take progesterone pills for 3 months until it could be re-inserted
