I've got an annual leave day today and am spending the morning shamelessly on the sofa watching daytime TV with cups of tea and biscuits after an exhausting school summer hols. Kids back at school today. I've given myself permission to vegetate till 3:15pm.
So here I am watching This Morning and have just spent 5 minutes with my jaw wide open and hand over my mouth at what Miriam Margolyes just said to Andi Peters.
Did anyone else see it??
I mean it takes a lot to shock me. I am not easily shocked.
And this woman is currently doing a sell out tour??

I think you're missing the point, a GP now is very middle class, in the 30s and 40s when he was practising (and when she was born - 40s), it would have been a very middle class, upper middle class family

She certainly is posh as far as Im concerned, not upper class, not aristocracy, but she isnt 'bog standard'.

No you cant, so why not, in certain conversations talk about it?
It's not the bloody elephant in the room, it's a part of who a person is, and if their hair colour, skin colour, heritage comes into it...why shy away from it.

No it would have been middle class then as it is now. In the 30s & 40s far more people in the upper and upper middle classes didn’t work.

In any case her grandparents were Jewish immigrants and Jewish people were still othered prior to WWII so it’s arguable that to some people they may not have been fully accepted as middle class.

I think the word is pretentious or having an air of affectation rather than posh, but I know exactly what you mean. Probably cultivated at Cambridge to fit in, so she now believes she is part of an exclusive club which gives her the right to select the membership of others, consequently she frequently delivers sharp, unfiltered judgments on other public figures, culture, and etiquette.

This rather feels like someone acting as an arbiter of who "belongs" or who meets her standards of intellect and conduct.

Tbh I don’t care how good of an actor she is, when she was born or what her parents did, I just think she’s a rather unpleasant person, who seems to think being foul mouthed and rude makes her funny.
Her comment to AP was utterly bizarre, made worse by her wittering on then about ‘we’re inclusive’. I mean wtf?!

Still don't think there's been enough media attention about this since Thursday.
It's very disappointing.

Listened to a recent interview. She's from Oxford, not Glasgow, and her parents sent her to elocution.

She doesn't have a posh accent, that's quite different and often sounds slurred, she has slightly exaggerated but clear annunciation.

She does a good impression of posh amongst her wide repertoire of accents.

Margolyes is awful - of course - but Andrew Peters didn't seem offended or annoyed in the slightest (more slightly baffled).

He's a complete professional, he's not going to get angry or upset on live telly.

Likely unfortunately because he will have encountered so much racism and prejudice that he’s immune to the offensiveness of it. It’s horrible to watch!

She got away with it quite simply because of which side of the fence she sits. How can she possibly be a racist when she's left wing? Narrow minds flock together in support.
