OMG Miriam Margolyes Andi Peters

I've got an annual leave day today and am spending the morning shamelessly on the sofa watching daytime TV with cups of tea and biscuits after an exhausting school summer hols. Kids back at school today. I've given myself permission to vegetate till 3:15pm.
So here I am watching This Morning and have just spent 5 minutes with my jaw wide open and hand over my mouth at what Miriam Margolyes just said to Andi Peters.
Did anyone else see it??
I mean it takes a lot to shock me. I am not easily shocked.
And this woman is currently doing a sell out tour??
Whoah.

In what sense is that "whataboutery"?

Two other things you have failed to grasp:

  1. I understand why people capitalise it that way when the piece is authored as a written piece. I still disagree that such a policy is a force for good.
  2. The sentence was not authored as a written piece: it was spoken, and the racist capitalisation was conferred by the transcriber.

She is Jewish but has said horrifically racist stuff about Jews in the past eg old tropes, stuff about appearance etc

Not at all surprised she has used racist term or spoken about shades etc of black people.

I believe half of it is she makes herself relevant to get acting work or paid interviews by being outrageous and half of it is she is actually a very unpleasant human being.

She has made being offensive and outrageous into her ‘thing’ and continues as if she is impervious somehow to censure. She often seems to cite her age as some sort of defence. It is really out of control now.

She has gotten away with her sickly sex tales for many years, but racial slurs are a different matter.
Her usual wide-eyed innocence and girlish naivety act after being foul-mouthed won't get her out of this one.
I hope her TV 'career' is over now.

This thread has been an eye opener about MM. i have barely seen her on things and the little I have seen she seemed fine. Appears she is known for being a gross, offensive, rather vile woman.

She was also weird with Will.I.am on the Graham Norton show by drawing attention to his race. Never does it with white people. She
hides behind this faux naive/curious act. Says it all….

its 2026. How about we treat people as individuals first. I’m half Indian. Day to day my race really doesn’t come into play. I’ve been in group settings where my background was the only one inquired about. It’s very othering and makes you feel different. If some people can’t see the issue then that’s good for them. But some od us do not appreciate this kind of behaviour. I’m happy to talk about my background but only if it’s coming from a genuine place.

This isn’t the first time the Little Dorrit and Babe actor - who last year shared plans to move to Italy - has sparked outcry with her comments about people’s race.

In 2024, she was blasted for asking Australian presenter Waleed Aly about his skin colour during an appearance on the panel show, The Project.

As the panel were speaking about the ongoing war in Gaza, Margolyes, who is Jewish, said she felt that a “ceasefire” needs to happen immediately, adding: “Whether you’re Black or white, it doesn’t matter.”

She then turned to host Aly and asked: “What are you by the way?
You’re sort of brown.”
While the question prompted gasps from some of the audience,
Aly said: “This is a really interesting question actually. I’ve thought about this a lot. I’m not joking about that… I’m Egyptian.”

“Oh really,” Margolyes replied.
“Which is in Africa. So, what do you want to call that?” he asked.
“Well, lucky I think,” responded Margolyes. “Because I like the Egyptian people. I’m on the side of the Palestinians.”

Race obsessed people are so weird to me. What a weird thing to say.

What a massive prat. She 'loves Egyptian people'. Egypt also has a massive border with gaza and they certainly don't let gazans in but don't mention that Farty Pants Margolyes!

It is a weird thing to say isn’t it. Is she senile? Why is she waffling on about Palestinians in that context?

I'm used to people who Speak As They Find trying to say nice things about my skin shade and how they wish they were also similarly Exotic. Again it's the sort of thing that People Who Speak As They Find and believe they are national treasures might think of as being inclusive
