I have tinned food, gas camping stoves etc just need to think about water really..

Even The camping stoves themselves come with warnings and instructions. If you’re too stupid to read them and use your own common sense then that’s on you.

I think being level headed and sensible without scaremongering panic is probably a tad more useful.They’ve not said the world is going to end but simply to have a bit of extra food in for storms. I heard about this over a week ago.
It's supposed to do with the change in weather conditions and global warming.How the increased temps or floods could cause a shortage of food stuffs etc.
So can anyone think of the odd thing that we should squirrel away...I'm not think of stuff like beans etc..something a bit different.

This has been the advice for years in Finland, its just simple preparedness. Also the advice includes having a portable stove e.g. a camping stove

Also my country staged a large civil defence drill for just the kind of thing this advice is for - cyber attacks affecting power and water supplies. Clearly my government believes this is a real potential threat, not scaremongering, they wouldn't waste money on drills for no reason when they're cutting spending everywhere else.

On camping stoves. I'm on a couple of campervan groups where those suitcase type stoves have 'exploded' when I'm use. What they think is happening is because the gas canister is installed close to the flame, there has been unburnt gas that has gathered under a large pan, that has then flared and in turn ignited the cannister.

Having used this type of stove safely for years, I've just swapped to a stove where the gas canister is attached through a hose and can be kept at more of a distance instead.

If those people can read posts on here (or navigate the internet) then they can read the instructions that come with the gas camping stoves. Unless they are really stupid.. in which case Darwinism ftw.

No the gvt haven't suggested stockpiling at all. Just that its wise to have maybe three days extra food - tinned/dried/packets and some bottled water because in event of major power outages/ extreme bad weather - you have something to tide you over until services get back to normal

Rather like the same advice for going on holiday - ensure you have extra prescription meds/baby formula etc - in case your luggage goes walkies

The jist of the suggestion is enough to tide you over until other arrangements are made. After living somewhere with frequent power cuts I always have a few tins, packets and jars and I'll make sure there is plenty of fresh bread if a storm is forecast. It's not exactly stockpiling.
