Friends promised a BBQ and delivered an Iceland beige buffet!

As above really, myself, DH and 3 DC went to our friends’ house yesterday on the promise of some drinks in the garden and a BBQ.

They said they were having issues with their BBQ so would do an ‘indoor BBQ’. This consisted of beige food from Iceland!!

AIBU to find this a woeful alternative?

Yes, I think it's all got a bit precious from some posters on here. Out of proportion!

They had to cater for a family of 5! Bet the kids enjoyed it. It’s not about the food it’s about the company.

I don’t think OP thought about providing good company to compensate for the food.

Why are you sneering at friends who offered you free food and drink? Would it be different if the sausage rolls were from Waitrose and not Iceland? Money might be really tight but they still wanted to host, don't be mean and ungrateful

Its not my ideal food but Id happily eat it if friends had provided it. I wouldn't have given it a second thought.

Does it make you feel more sophisticated or better than them to complain about their food.? It was only one meal

But I don't eat food like that.
It's not a BBQ.
They were invited for a BBQ and they decided to just not bother.
Better to reschedule, or invite them just for drinks.

She reacts to an invite by Gwen to a BBQ by stating she is only interested if there is a huge array of meaty delights ! And she was definitely known for her rude behaviour ( in more ways than one ).
And yes i was believing it until the mention of the posh ready meals in the freezer waiting at home. Definitely jumped the shark there as someone has already pointed out.

Well op Yanbu that a beige buffet is a woeful alternative to a good bbq (not the sausages and burgers kind, I would put those on the same level!), I don’t really eat that sort of food either and haven’t from as soon as I left home.
I’d eat enough to look polite but just enjoy the company, time spent with friends is rarely a bad use of time.

I think it would be good manners to eat some of the food provided by your host, but if that's really beyond you, always make it clear to your hosts beforehand. Perhaps with a list of forbidden ingredients.

The notion that a beige buffet is bad but a shop bought pizza is fine is ludicrous. It’s all the same factory made stuff.

I’m not against either but the idea that because something is “stonebaked” (despite never having seen a stone, let alone been baked on one) and has a lovely photo of a Tuscan veranda on the box, it’s somehow better than a six pack of sausage rolls is snobbery at its finest.

I'd have been delighted personally, Iceland beige food is my absolute favourite. Beats minced up animal innards charred over hot cokes and tasting slightly of lighter fuel (i.e. a British BBQ) any day of the week.

A barbecued chicken breast, steak or salmon fillet is less processed. (And tastier, IMO). Not that it’s a big deal; just answering your question.

Usually chicken goujons, cocktail sausages, spring rolls, that kind of thing. Often involves pastry or breadcrumbs.
