Friends promised a BBQ and delivered an Iceland beige buffet!

As above really, myself, DH and 3 DC went to our friends’ house yesterday on the promise of some drinks in the garden and a BBQ.

They said they were having issues with their BBQ so would do an ‘indoor BBQ’. This consisted of beige food from Iceland!!

AIBU to find this a woeful alternative?

Did they at least cook burgers and sausages? Or was it all cold party food?

Cocktail sausages, the rest was party food.

It may not have been your choice but they still hosted and provided food.

would you have declined the invite if you’d have known about the food??

Yes - well I’d have suggested some alternative options first.

yes I would be disappointed, but I wouldn’t say so. And I would eat what was offered and thank them when I left

If they offered a beige Iceland buffet as an alternative, they were probably planning on a beige Iceland BBQ to begin with, so no harm done.

But it's disingenuous of people to pretend that you are unreasonable to be disappointed. An afternoon with friends and good food is nicer than an afternoon with friends and bad food.

It's not rude or mean or unreasonable to notice this.

It's not mean or unreasonable to go online and post vapid drivel about the food that your friends graciously offered to you, whether it was a BBQ or not, was "beige" and that you were disappointed with it because it didn't match up to your standards?

Nothing but pure cope in this reply 😂

What did you contribute?

Given that the Lord Mayor of the UK has banned BBQs what choice did they have ;)

Maybe it was an issue with the bbq, or a different problem they didn't want to disclose. It could have meant they couldn't get the stuff so did the party food instead, rather than cancelling? Have you been friends long, been for food before at each others houses?

Why not host if it's so important to you what is served?

You could decline an invitation if you aren't happy to be served what your friends put on the table.

Thestealer · Yesterday 19:56

I love an Iceland buffet but then I'm not a food snob.

Happyjoe · Yesterday 19:56

To be honest, most of that pre-packaged party food is a bit naff, no matter where it's from. I've bought rubbish from M&S, waitrose and tesco, all of them equally pants. Yeah, I made the mistake in ordering for a few xmasses, not anymore.

But, yes, a BBQ would've been nicer. But it was kind of them to host regardless. Hope had a good time with friends, other than the food? That's the main thing.

Vapid drivel? What were you expecting on here?

This is AIBU, not The Moral Maze.

No, it's not mean. It would be mean to mention it to your hosts. It's not mean to notice that someone has served you shit food.

Free food? Friends? What's the real issue?

Exactly. So rude to complain.

You don’t sound like a very nice person tbh

What did you contribute?

Yes what did you bring along? They hosted a family of 5, and it sounds like thr party food will have pleased dcs at the very least, while the adults caught up? Isn't talking what it is about?

Needmorelego · Yesterday 20:00

So if the "party food" had come from M+S and Waitrose would it have been ok.
Nothing wrong with Iceland.
Their food is fine. I do my main shop from there because their home delivery service is excellent.

Lararoft · Yesterday 20:00

Well it was free.. so no problem in my view!

ladykale · Yesterday 20:01

Very ungrateful… I hope your friend isn’t on Mumsnet!

YourJoyousDenimExpert · Yesterday 20:01

Are people having BBQs? Thought we weren’t at the moment….??

ladykale · Yesterday 20:02

This type of judgment is why people are increasingly reluctant to host

DarkForces · Yesterday 20:02

Bbqdisaster · Yesterday 19:52

Yes - well I’d have suggested some alternative options first.

If someone hosts you then the only words you need are thank you. Not alternative menu suggestions or bitching on mumsnet but a simple thanks.

canuckup · Yesterday 20:03

I was invited to a BBQ once. It rained. So instead of putting the food in the oven, we just didn't eat.

That was a fun afternoon.

Dumbledora8 · Yesterday 20:03

You sound stuck up and snobby

Jeschara · Yesterday 20:03

If this is true, I find your attitude very entitled and ungrateful. Honestly you sound like a spoilt brat.
Your friends hosted, paid for the food and done their best. I wonder if they know how horrible their friebd is.

TicklishReader · Yesterday 20:03

It wouldn't have bothered me, but I like my friends.

Maybe perhaps not in uk? Op could have always dropped by a posh steakhouse on the way home. I bet you could have cut the tension with a knife, and they won't be reinviting.
