I hate the dull weather and miss the sun…I am probably unreasonable

I am in north west England and have been loving the heat and sun. Yes, we needed rain but why not a day or 2 of rain and then back to sunshine?, and repeat until the end of September. I don’t even need it that hot - 22 degrees would be fine. But last night and today, it’s back to the grey sky we have for 75% of the year.

Last night I shut our blinds about 8 as it was so grey, and I instantly felt oppressively sad. I have SAD and dread the end of summer. And autumn inevitably brings grey skies and rain here, setting off my asthma.

Anyway, am I being completely unreasonable to areas the return of grey skies?

That doesn’t make sense to me (unlesss I’m reading it wrong).
Yanbu to want sunshine, that’s your preference. I’m glad it was cooler today because I’m bored of the heat and sun

BeeHive909 · 17/08/2026 13:57

Yep you are unreasonable and need to move to a warmer country then . I’m in Manchester and absolutely loving the cooler weather, rain and moody skies.

OhBumBags · 17/08/2026 13:58

You've said you suffer from a mental health condition so you can't be unreasonable.

Do you have a coping mechanism in place?

daisyydaisyy · 17/08/2026 14:02

I also have SAD but I have insomnia too because of the heat. It needs to fuck off. I’m more happy when I’ve had a good nights sleep! I can still go on my hikes when it’s grey so it’s not too bad. We need the green back. The heat is actually making me more depressed.

I would LOVE to move somewhere warmer and hotter, and most importantly, sunnier! I don’t even mind cold, winter days when the sun is shining.

Move further south. Yabu it's lovely having it cooler and darker evenings. We've literally had good weather since April!

I am still content to be told I am unreasonable, I am that not precious. I didn’t used to be this bad - my wonderful dad died 2 years ago at the end of this month. That has definitely made the dread more pronounced.

That sounds so tough, hopefully the break will help you sleep. Lack of sleep is genuinely torturous.

No op, yanbu. There's been months of moaning and complaining about the heat - those of us who struggle with rain and grey are allowed to feel a bit sad when the sun goes in too!

MrSchubertWhiskers · 17/08/2026 14:18

I'm in the Midlands, we have a lot cloud but its stayed bright. I'm loving it, it's a more normal summer temperature- still hot, mid-high 20s but not oppressive so, which means we can enjoy the weather properly.

I'm holding out hope for decent rain, I've been finding the drought really depressing - watching everything die and the wildfires- and it's terrifying for the future.

We need enough rain to wet the earth again and then some more for the water to soak in. Hopefully this will happen over the next month instead of getting it all in 2-3 consecutive days.

If the light is low enough where you are to depress you then get a SAD lamp and use it daily. Also start taking daily vitamin d from this week, both make a big difference to SAD.

Yay! Someone agrees - we need to pool our money and get some winter sun.

I feel the same way as you do. It's grey here cold and raining outside.

ApplePieCinamon · 17/08/2026 14:20

I saw the grey skies today and instantly my entire mood lifted. I felt myself again and so much happier since July. The heat has been miserable and extreme. Loathed it and I’m all for this gloomy weather

mondaytosunday · 17/08/2026 14:20

No rain yet but it is overcast today and all I can say is hallelujah! Can’t wait for several days of rain and more bearable temps in the low 20s.

I agree we need rain - it just tends to forget to stop once it starts!

I do take vitamin d, will look into a SAD lamp. I love waking up and seeing that sun shining in. I was definitely born in the wrong country.

I wouldn't describe the recent round of infernal heatwaves and no rain for 4 months as "good weather"

Not even raining here - wish it would rain and clear up. Just grey. I work from home, which probably doesn’t help.

You are not alone. I have loved this summer. But, we have air con at work. And at home, I have shade. I am also not too far from a drive to the beach.

I have previously worked in jobs that are very hard in the heat: hairdressing and hospitality. My son is a Chef. I feel very sorry for anyone working in those kinds of jobs in the heat.

For the first time in my life, I now understand the appeal of living somewhere that has a summer like this every year.

Glad it is improving for you then! We need to arrange a swap to our ideal weather, twice a year!

Oh god yeah, I feel so sorry for people who work in shops, healthcare and hospitality in those weather. Pubs and restaurants should shut the ovens off and do salads and sandwiches, when it is hot.

Yes, constant sunny with 25c would be just perfect with occasional rain. But after Thursday, this is ok break.
