I hate the dull weather and miss the sun…I am probably unreasonable

I am in north west England and have been loving the heat and sun. Yes, we needed rain but why not a day or 2 of rain and then back to sunshine?, and repeat until the end of September. I don’t even need it that hot - 22 degrees would be fine. But last night and today, it’s back to the grey sky we have for 75% of the year.

Last night I shut our blinds about 8 as it was so grey, and I instantly felt oppressively sad. I have SAD and dread the end of summer. And autumn inevitably brings grey skies and rain here, setting off my asthma.

Anyway, am I being completely unreasonable to areas the return of grey skies?

I wouldn't describe the recent round of infernal heatwaves and no rain for 4 months as "good weather"

And that’s what makes the world a great place, variety

Ace56 · 17/08/2026 14:26

YABU to live in the north of England if you have SAD. You must be depressed for 10 months of the year!

You're making it sound like you're complaining to the council or the goverment or something 😂
As someone has said, move further south - its sunny and muggy here today.

Lemonyyy · 17/08/2026 14:28

All the people saying just move south, you know not everyone can just up and move whenever they feel like it right?

I am ha ha! Alas my mum, husband and son are here. They all love the autumn and winter; weirdos! Though they have birthdays then and mine is in June. Maybe I was born in the wrong time of the year 🤷🏼‍♀️

I wish I could! Like, can I speak to the manager about this please!

All the reservoirs up here in the north where I am are quite low. We need rain to survive so yes you're being unreasonable. All the grass is yellow.

Shinyhappyapple · 17/08/2026 14:32

I think it’s human nature a bit. Mostly we agree that it’s been too hot over a large part of England and Wales for the past few weeks, and that rain is much needed. But we can still enjoy the sunshine when it’s 22°. The problem is this summer there either seems to be low twenties with cloud or we get some sun and it’s over 30°.

AnitaCam · 17/08/2026 14:32

London has been horrible in this hot weather. The pavements are filthy, everything looks very grotty because of that, and every sodding nook and cranny is absolutely jam packed. Horrendous.

I understand we NEED rain, I still don’t like it. If anyone wants to pitch in and buy me a ticket to somewhere hot then I would allow an abundance of rain to fall.

Yes - let’s have sun and 20-25 degree weather, and it can rain at night. I’d be happy-ish then. It’s the grey I can’t abide. It’s so depressing.

I'm in Scotland and it's just dull, I'd have loved some of the sun the south got.

BogRollBOGOF · 17/08/2026 14:38

Grey and warm here. The temperature is nice. Still t-shirt and sandals, but being overcast isn't cheering up my sad droopy shrubs. It's not the energising brightness of sunshine, or the usefulness of rain.

I'm not sure that I've got any viable apples growing on my apple tree as there's no moisture left to invest in them. Normally it's shucking off the spares by now so the best ones have space to ripen. Normall my garden's getting into its second wind of blooms after the mid-summer lull, but everything's dormant and saving its moisture.

The 10 minutes of drizzle this morning went nowhere. We need a decent amount of rain, but I'm not ready for autumn gloom to set in. There's enough guarenteed between November to at least March and often beyond. It was a gloomy spring too until we were catapulted into the first round of heat right at the end of May before another bout of cold and wet. It's only been consistently dry since mid-June (just a bit too much of it in one block!)

Sounds perfect to me!

Strawbewwy · 17/08/2026 14:39

I know we need rain to survive, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. I'm in outer London so have been in the proper, proper heat for weeks now. I usually do complain if it is hotter than about 25, but have acclimatised to the heat and don't want it to go. I can't remember the last time I wore trousers or a jumper (and only wear socks/trainers to exercise then straight back to sandals!).

More importantly than the heat though, I NEED blue skies. Cold and blue over slightly warmer and grey for me in the winter. Grey just makes me sad.

ElenOfTheWays · 17/08/2026 14:40

What a pity we can't all just order the weather we want off Amazon

Well - give it time

Yes. The perfect grand design. Rain every night between 01:00 and 04:00 then clear skies

Sorry about your apple tree.
if my dad was alive he would aghast at this weather for his garden:

It could have waited until after our camping trip to rain 😫 But at least I got my roof repair completed.

I voted YANBU because I was born and raised in the west pennines and know from experience you only get a week of summer up there if you're lucky.

The worst us when we visit my family and sit for days looking at rain while it's wall to wall sunshine at home.

Thoughts and prayers (and don't forget your brolly) xx
