Popping to the shop - which makes more sense?

Am I going insane??

Two adults.

One is cycling in to the local high street for a coffee with child. Coffee spot literally across the street from M&S.

One is driving in to the same town centre to drop off a child at the library, will not be getting out of the car, but because of the layout of the road will have to drive past the back of the same M&S.

one adult suggests to the other that they pop in and pick up some rolls and cold cuts for lunch, as they will be feet away from the shop, bikes already chained up.

the cycling adult says they think the other adult should do it, they are driving right past it. Driving adult explains they have no intention of getting out of the car, so it would add on a car parking space faff/fee.

they’ve reached an impasse, as both adults think it makes more sense for the other to go.

My live in husband and I are heading out for lunch together today. Must tell him that he should stay at home according to the MN refreshment rules.

Child is old enough to ride their own bike into town, and presumably also eats food. Therefore can go into the shop with parent to get the food.

I think you should have just got them in the car and let your husband enjoy his time with the kids, but that’s just me. Far easier that going shopping in Lycra and a helmet and having to bring back meat that is getting warm being outside

I‘ve seen this point mentioned before, and I’ve questioned it before but no one has answered. Does no one else run errands when with their children?
should I too be enjoying my time with the children and not picking up any food for the family, or general housework?

It’s not, it’s really just that I cannot wrap my head around walking past the actual shop, but thinking the person merely driving by it should instead park, pay for parking and go in instead.

Your dh was being a lazy sod. So much easier for him as he was literally right there. And yes I used to go shopping and everything with my three kids because i'm a grown up. Admittedly it wasn't always easy.

Going shopping in Lycra is really easy. Honestly, I do it all the time.

The main car park in my town is so bad that last Xmas people were getting parking tickets from the camera things because they couldnt get out after paying! There is one entrance/exit for just under 1000 spaces. It caused mayhem and took ages to get the tickets cancelled, the MP had to get involved. Its so bad that more and more people are now going to the next town along and the town is dying. So if it was my town, no way would I be doing it if someone on a bike was already there!

The driver - has no child to contend with in m&s and doesn’t have to cart said bits home on their bike.

Ultimately, I think your DH is in the right. It sounds like something you wanted rather than him, so it should be you putting yourself out to get it rather than him. Both of you could easily have done it if you'd wanted to.

The cyclist should get the stuff because it's easier than the driver having to faff around finding a parking space and then pay for it.

I don’t cycle so I genuinely don’t know the answer to this. But surely it can’t be easy for a cyclist to carry a load of shopping and a child on their bike?

The cyclist would go without an issue, and spend lots more than expected. The driver is tired, hair not done and not wearing a bra, she’s staying in the car. At least that’s what would happen here

Yeah bit of a difference between having a nice lunch and having a coffee in a town centre. I guess part of my thoughts were around the cycling into the town centre to do this, rather than going somewhere nice. A coffee at the beach or countryside seems a bit more of an event than a coffee shop opposite M&S. But given you are not the first person to pick me up on this, it looks like I’m the minority here .

I’ve mentioned numerous times that no argument took place.

The car driver should. For all the ‘wasn’t planning on getting out of the car’, the cyclist and child wasn’t planning on crossing the street and doing any shopping either. Who was the one who particularly wanted the nicer rolls and filling? Surely they should get it as the other one doesn’t seem that inclined to care whether they have it or not.

Picky bits is worse than cold cuts! Cold meat or characuterie, depending on how much is cured vs not.

Yeah, that's what I think. For either of them it was doable to pick stuff up with just a minor diversion, so it's up to the one who really wanted it to put themselves out in a small way. That's obviously OP, her DH clearly wasn't bothered.
