Aibu to think 6 years sentence is far too lenient for killing your baby.

Am I the only person who thinks sentencing Courtney Gartshaw to just 6 years for killing her 3 month old baby with hairdryer (burned her to death) is a travesty of justice. She will likely be out in 3! She took the baby on a drink and drug fuelled bender, returning home at 3am, before turning the hairdryer on her tiny baby . Her body was so badly damaged the paramedics thought the baby was decomposed. Gartshaw was allowed bail and her lawyers pleaded for her not to be incarcerated because of her mental health. WTF has happened to our justice system.

Nope. I don't think that makes it inherently bad – not necessarily. The Nazis also built the autobahn, I believe. Is liking the autobahn edgelord behaviour?
You can't just argue 'bad because Nazi!' to try to shut people up – you need to state actual reasons.

Personally, I think that locking someone up in prison until menopause just to stop them getting pregnant, or letting them get pregnant over and over and taking their babies away every time, is actually much crueller than sterilisation. It should at least be offered in these cases, along with a sentence discount.

If you think that the effectiveness of road building is on a par with the consequences of forced sterilisation of criminals then there really is no point debating with you at all. Enjoy your Sunday.

No, I think that if you want to argue something is bad, then actually argue why it's bad, don't just shout 'Nazi!' and call people edgelords, while not engaging with their arguments at all.

OtterlyAstounding · 16/08/2026 12:52

@Runningswanker thanks for your support, via the react button (now that seems more like an edgelord thing to do). I'd prefer thoughtful engagement, but perhaps you don't actually have an argument to back up your statement? That's okay.

It is not my responsibility to educate you on something that most people learn by year 8 of high school. Or pick up through basic human decency. Go waste someone else's time.

So you've no actual reasons why imprisoning someone for 20 years longer as a pp suggested, or taking their newborns away over and over again to go into the care system, is apparently 'more humane'?

Oh well, fair enough.

Sterilisation will be only be given to those who have been found guilty of child neglect, murder. This also includes males.

We are talking of a couple of hundred max

No father around, another grim situation .

I know of another case where a mother drowned her child in the bath. She took the body to a lake and faked a drowning scene and called emergency services pretending the child had drowned. She got four years. It’s appalling.

You mean this one?

You're leaving out the crucial fact that this was due to psychosis.

20 years in prison for the undertaker who didn't bury dead customers. 7 for this freak.go figure.

It wasn't just 'not burying dead customers'. It was serious fraud. Grieving families were given the wrong ashes.

Disgraceful thread. A young single mother, with mental health problems, came off her medication during pregnancy. Death by neglect, not murder.

Have some fucking compassion.

mathanxiety · 20/08/2026 04:50

The charge she was convicted of is culpable homicide through recklessness, not murder. Murder would have involved intent, and that was, in the opinion of the prosecutor, too hard to prove

Part of her legal defense was that the baby was already dead of unknown causes (possibly hypothermia) and the hair dryer was deployed in an attempt to warm her up (clearly not the solution a sensible or sober person would have thought of). This defense was rejected by the jury, who voted unanimously to convict her of the culpable homicide charge.

The maximum sentence available to the judge in the Scottish system for this charge is seven years. Various mitigating factors and other elements of the case were taken into account by the judge in passing a sentence of six years.

Apparently there is an older child who was not in this mother's care. This child had had social services involvement in her life.

Just incredibly sad all around.

Do you think other countries are immune from cases like this? If so, you are deluded.

I think that comment was a response to the leniency of the sentence.

Agree with you. Awful case but must we continue to stigmatise those with MH difficulties. It 2026 not 1986

Why should we? I've had MH problems since I was a kid guess what I made it through life without killing a innocent baby I bet your so called "sympathy" wouldn't exist if this was a father because only women are allowed to have issues

Yes and I wonder who'd be making excuses for a man who did something as horrific as this.

It's easy for all the bleeding hearts on here to feel sorry for the poor lady but if this case was a man he'd be guilty automatically only women are allowed to use MH problems as a excuse for anything
