Aibu to think 6 years sentence is far too lenient for killing your baby.

Am I the only person who thinks sentencing Courtney Gartshaw to just 6 years for killing her 3 month old baby with hairdryer (burned her to death) is a travesty of justice. She will likely be out in 3! She took the baby on a drink and drug fuelled bender, returning home at 3am, before turning the hairdryer on her tiny baby . Her body was so badly damaged the paramedics thought the baby was decomposed. Gartshaw was allowed bail and her lawyers pleaded for her not to be incarcerated because of her mental health. WTF has happened to our justice system.

She wouldn't be continuously monitored in the sense of say, whether she starts a relationship, but it's exceptionally difficult to hide a pregnancy to full term and even more so to hide a baby once they've arrived. There are mechanisms in place if say, a pregnant woman tries to avoid scrutiny by moving area or going under the radar.

Those mechanisms didn’t work with Constance Marten and Mark Gordon, though, until it was too late..

Netcurtainnelly · 15/08/2026 16:48

Appeal it. Anyone can

You rarely hear a sentence today that seems long enough.

This may be a suprise to you, but when things
work, they don't tend to make the news.
I also suspect that the mum in this case doesn't have access to a tens of thousands of pounds of cash that would enable her to go into hiding, unlike constance did.

I think something like the choice of either sterilisation and a more lenient sentence (10 years?), or a life sentence, seems reasonable for the government to offer in a case like this. Let her decide. She doesn’t appear to be a danger to anyone but her own children, so her risk of reoffending is nil if she can't have children.

(Although personally, if I was judge, jury, and executioner, I'd do just that as soon as the trial was done. But that's neither here nor there, as to everyone's relief, I am not.)

I agree. In cases of child abuse/manslaughter/murder of their own child, those convicted should get the choice of a longer sentence, where they will serve the whole term, or a shorter sentence + voluntary sterilisation.

Victorius19 · 15/08/2026 16:53

At the very least she should be forcibly sterilised.

At best, she should behind bars for life.

Well, exactly, she would be free to go wherever she wanted.

With the aid of thousands of pounds of cash, and it was so unusual that it made national headlines. One exception doesn't mean the system doesn't work, there are plenty of babies born safely as a result of these mechanisms, but they're not exciting or unusual enough to be reported in the press.

Is...is this a serious question?

One option involves a longer prison sentence. The other is AN INVASIVE OPERATION quite possibly performed against her will.

Absolutely! You're going to keep someone in prison for say, 15 or 20 years longer than you otherwise would, with the intent of holding them until they're infertile? And you think thats more humane than keyhole surgery of the sort that people have all the time, with a shorter sentence? You think that's better for their rehabilitation? Better for the tax payer? Seriously??

At least give the criminal the ability to choose.

I'm sure I read that someone had said she was out with baby earlier that day and someone commented on the baby being freezing. I wonder if the baby was hypothermic and in her drug addled state she thought she was warming them up. Horrible case, poor baby.

This. Its likely the baby was dead already or at the very least she thought she was warming up

Death by neglect, but not murder

Im not sure what an appropriate sentence is to be honest. This doesnt seem long enough but I dont believe she murdered the baby

Awful situation. I also dont think its relevant what her background is. Once you become a parent your sole responsbility is that child.

Runningswanker · 15/08/2026 16:00

If she were to become pregnant she would be monitored during the pregnancy and the baby would almost certainly be removed at birth for adoption or care within her extended family.

Honestly I would be surprised if she makes it that far though, surely she's extremely high risk of suicide. I know prisons have steps in place to try and prevent that but they're not failsafe. She had a history of attempts on her life prior to being a mum, let alone with this.

Creating multiple adoptive children who have been torn away from the mother who murdered their sibling is not a success, though. If you're going to forcibly take any babies she gestates away anyway, traumatising both her and the child, why not just sterilise her? It seems kinder to everyone, and much safer.

In what way is that a good outcome…for the mother or the child? If a mother has clearly demonstrated that she is unable to care for her children adequately, to such an extent that the state has decided it will step in to make sure she cannot keep any subsequent children she may have, what is the objection to sterilisation?

It’s the UK. I'm no longer shocked.

Do you think other countries are immune from cases like this? If so, you are deluded.

caringcarer · 16/08/2026 03:56

The sad truth is this woman will be probably be released 2/3 of the way though her sentence and get pregnant again.

TheOriginalEmu · 16/08/2026 04:01

15minutesaday · 14/08/2026 16:32

No you're not being unreasonable.

Self-inflicted (drug fuelled/substance abuse induced) mental health issues should not be considered in a plea for leniency. She'll be pampered and mollycoddled by the system under the guise of rehabilitation.

I'm afraid I've got little sympathy for drug users and think they should be allowed to take as many drugs as they want and with a bit of luck, overdose and die. Then it's one less burden on the tax payer and would solve the overcrowded prison situation too. Use the stuff they get from the drug raids and offer them freely in prisons.

with that disgusting attitude you’re just as bad if not worse than someone who does things fuelled by drugs, you are presumably sober and that’s how your mind works. gross.

I would think the ignorance of history that's demonstrated by anyone suggesting forced sterilisation is a good idea is indicative that they should be a candidate really.

I read that comment and...disagree.

I'm not sure why thinking sterilisation is better than potentially ripping baby after baby from their mother's arms as she repeatedly gets pregnant, is 'edgelord' behaviour?

You don't think bringing back one of the Nazi's showcase policies is edgelord behaviour?

Runningswanker · 16/08/2026 11:30

Nope. I don't think that makes it inherently bad – not necessarily. The Nazis also built the autobahn, I believe. Is liking the autobahn edgelord behaviour?
You can't just argue 'bad because Nazi!' to try to shut people up – you need to state actual reasons.

Personally, I think that locking someone up in prison until menopause just to stop them getting pregnant, or letting them get pregnant over and over and taking their babies away every time, is actually much crueller than sterilisation. It should at least be offered in these cases, along with a sentence discount.

Ok maybe, I haven't read up on it but find it hard to believe someone who took her baby on a bender then did this was perfectly normal the rest of the time

Yes and I wonder who'd be making excuses for a man who did something as horrific as this.
