Aibu to think 6 years sentence is far too lenient for killing your baby.

Am I the only person who thinks sentencing Courtney Gartshaw to just 6 years for killing her 3 month old baby with hairdryer (burned her to death) is a travesty of justice. She will likely be out in 3! She took the baby on a drink and drug fuelled bender, returning home at 3am, before turning the hairdryer on her tiny baby . Her body was so badly damaged the paramedics thought the baby was decomposed. Gartshaw was allowed bail and her lawyers pleaded for her not to be incarcerated because of her mental health. WTF has happened to our justice system.

Sadly the judgment says the baby likely died of hyperthermia, ie from heat, not hypo, from cold. Hyperthermia and heatstroke. So she died from being heated by the hairdryer, but not from the visible injuries, ie the burns.
Absolutely horrible. I feel very sorry for the jury and legal staff who had to sit through this case, and of course Dahlia-Rose.

I also thought this op, I cannot for the life of me understand such a short sentance, and the judge seemed to try to justify it by saying she’d have to live with it the rest of her life. She killed her baby in an utterly brutal and painful manner, wtf is wrong with the judge,

this sentance needs to be looked at again and increased.

No one who murdered someone is healthy and mentally stable. Doesn’t mean they don’t go to jail for a long time as a punishment.

As horrible as it is, if the situation was as the previous poster mentioned and she put the hair dryer on and passed out drunk, the charge and sentence makes more sense. Similar to drunk parents who have killed their child by co sleeping when drunk, or leaving them too close to a radiator. Its such a shame no one who saw her out and drunk that night intervened, it seems so easily avoidable in that regard.

Yes, sorry, I re read and the report does say hyperthermia. I got confused as earlier reporting had mentioned people commenting that the child "looked freezing"
I am not sure why she wasn't reported being out and about, obviously intoxicated, with a baby? Or maybe she was?

From the judgement (my bold):

^”The Crown’s expert’s position was that the likely cause of Dahlia Rose’s death was hyperthermia and heatstroke rather than burns.
The defence expert’s position was that Dahlia Rose was likely already dead from another sudden and unexplained cause, before she was subjected to heat from the hairdryer.
The jury clearly and emphatically rejected the defence position. They had no reasonable doubt that it was the heat from the hairdryer which caused Dahlia Rose’s death”^

I'm afraid I've got little sympathy for drug users and think they should be allowed to take as many drugs as they want and with a bit of luck, overdose and die

And how are they paying for all those drugs. Fewer addicts makes society better for everyone, not just the users.

How would you go about policing who was allowed to get pregnant? And how would you stop pregnancy?
