AIBU to discuss A level success without private school spending?

Parents/carers who have not spent a penny on Educating their children and they have just received great A level results.

The sacrifices made all the struggle,

I’m interested to discuss families where the child has succeeded without need for private school

Those who did pay,

presumably to secure great results at A level

The same kids off to Uni, placements easier to secure as less international competition. Uni the playing field evens.

And now time to pay for Uni,

https://inews.co.uk/news/education/university-tuition-fees-11000-2030-4705197?srsltid=AfmBOorss52PSHD6xJzisWMdeNxcXDen3IrCGS49nnGH1ZyDnmvTOh_k

A child who did outstanding (without spending a penny) the same result as a family who spent £250k + The above article is a low estimation for a selective U.K. day/ boarding.

The kids holding the same result off to the same Uni, How are families feeling!?…. Did you save to help towards the Uni Fees/accomodation.

Private school fees soar to £216,000 amid VAT raid

A private day school education from reception to A-levels now costs an average of £216,189

Mine were privately educated. I don’t think DD2 would have done any worse in the state system - her results weren’t stellar. DD1 also didn’t have stellar results but the small class sizes definitely helped, and I think she would have been lost in a big state school.

I’m interested in the topic,

value for money.

Value for money is subjective and very dependent on the child and context.

You seem not to consider it value for money so you should move to state, or another private school that you think is value for money. Other people’s judgements on this are irrelevant.

Absorbthecost · Today 14:21

Absorbthecost · Today 14:09

That’s a big £250k

to drop (on something which potentially as we can see, uni state educated candidate selection increase) may be something which matched with a state candidate could rule against them.

My interview would clearly mention my breath of communication skills (with the greater population), adaptability and organic academic ability. One may not have been educated independently but, one can function independently.

Seems everything is becoming more accessible.

A student is holding an open results envelope and letter while standing with two others indoors. One person holds a bouquet of flowers. Several people are visible in the background of the bright, gallery-like space.

Are the UK's top universities really 'hoovering up' students?

The most selective universities have seen the biggest rise in students accepted onto their courses for 2026.

No one can answer that, as everyone has different views on what is important. You are only measuring A-levels vs cost. Most private school parents aren’t paying purely for A Level results.

I am nowhere near this stage but I am not sending my children to private school for the grades. I am sending them so they have a happy experience of school without having to fight for resources or attention. Having taught in state schools for years I don’t want that environment for them, it has nothing to do with results for me personally

Lol. You say that as if unhappy experiences or bullying doesnt exist in independent schools.

PinkBottle75 · Today 14:24

Absorbthecost · Today 13:25

We’re talking about value for money

The best path to UK education, higher education. University admission.

And where does that all lead? Education isn’t something that you do in isolation. It all leads to paid work doesn’t it. Nice try to side step the issue though. I see what you did there. 👀

So the thought process is

Uni easier to get in to

Private school still outperforms state

but, comes with a £250k personal price tag.

Labour have just imposed the VAT when the billions collected have time to trickle into state schools over the coming years

Will state schools level up?

Of course it does but the difference is they can and do expel kids and you have a massive bargaining chip: your money.

Even purely on an A level vs cost consideration, if I had a spare £100 million then I might think £250k to improve A level grades by just one grade across three subjects is worth is. If I was hugely in debt and remortgaging the house to meet school fees then probably not.

No. They already allocated any extra money coming in to other areas. Google it. The 600 promised teachers the last time I checked are still in fantasy education-Labour-land.

Meadowfinch · Today 14:29

OP, your premise is faulty from the start.

My ds attended an independent school because a) Ofsted openly admitted the state school at which he was allocated a place, wasn't safe
and b) I, a single mum, mortgaged my soul to make it happen. I spent about £70,000 after his scholarship was applied. I'll have to work an extra five years.

We've lived on a rigidly tight budget for seven years but he's off to a top twenty British uni next month.

He is a hard working, self motivated young man who has worked part time during sixth form to help fund his uni years.

So does that make him is not posh enough to mix with state pupils, in your eyes? Or too posh?

Or perhaps you could park your (inverse?) snobbery and judge individuals on their merits.

If state have the time and resources to level up, if private financial mismanagement causes decline,

and university is an easier more achievable goal,

What could the education landscape be in UK in 2+ years time….

Education alone cannot transform a low ability child into a high achiever. I am a secondary dchool teacher. There is not necessarily a difference in quality of teaching in private schools over state schools. The difference can be the learning experience. You would hope there would be more teacher time for each pupil at private school as the classes would be smaller and also less disruption as parents are paying for it. As a teacher in a state school I feel this should be the norm too. It isn't always sadly. I am state school educated. Would I have sent any children i had to private school? Yes if I felt the experience they were going to have in allocated state school was going to compromised.

Yaaas, get in! State education here and so is whole family - we are Doctors, Pilots, Civil Servants….

6thformoptions · Today 14:32

For autistic and dyslexic dd private school was to ensure she didn't have the bullying she did in primary and actually was put with kids who also want to learn, without boys being violent and noisy. Money well spent for a few years of a peaceful childhood.

The VAT on fees isn’t going to the state education sector. It’s going on house building, according to the government.

That’s why I’m very interested in the success stories of those students who have managed with Zero price tag.

I find it absolutely inspiring that unlike what we’ve been brainwashed to think (our kids won’t survive out there) It is indeed possible!

Then just ask that question - private schooling hasn’t worked out for us and I would love to hear stories of children in state schools getting great A Level results. Why do you have to shit on a whole load of other parents’ choices just because it hasn’t worked out for you? If you pass your negative, bitter attitude on to your child and teach them their mistakes are everybody else’s fault your child won’t get very far in life, regardless of what school they go to.

Not that there is much left after the cost of those that have moved to state have been accounted for.

Let’s see if the new one corrects that and the money does go where it’s intended.

If we get confirmation from Labour this is coming it will be very interesting to see what happens in the near future…..
