To ask if you think the prime minister has a democratic duty to house asylum seekers in middle class areas

By which I mean, would most voters support this as opposed to a change in policy to refuse in greater numbers? I honestly can't tell what "the majority" actually wants. I would prefer fewer having seen how things went in Germany thanks to the Merkel wave but I am willing to believe I'm a backwards old boomer and a majority would be more welcoming.

They (UK governments) tend to say they have no choice due to the echr but this isn't true. There are a lot of operational choices they could make (eg sometimes when people are denied entry at the border they are actually allowed into the country for a few days and instructed to report back to the airport when it's time for the removal flight).

Labour always want to bring everyone down to the lowest possible level. Let’s make everywhere shit 🙄

They should be making the UK inhospitable for asylum seekers, rather than somewhere people aspire to live for free!!

Not just point scoring.

Lots of people in middle class areas are saying they want lots more immigrants "but they must be housed next to the poor not near us"

If we pursue this they will come out against all immigration.

I agree. As mentioned earlier, once the problem spreads out and impacts the middle class and the educated, they’ll change their outlook, now they won’t support the people.
They assume it is knuckle dragging toothless far right agitators who are being dramatic.
Once their area starts to suffer and their children feel unsafe, odd random men in their parks smoking crack, shitting in a bush, loitering around the local village, the school, eyeing up the ladies, and the teenage girls, they might even regret not voting reform.
You are been warned.
Do not assume that the government won’t buy up expensive housing stock, they’re cheaper than hotels.

I hear there's plenty of room in a Building called "Heron House" in Manchester...

Fascinating description of how European welfare gets gamed.

There is a perpetual conflation on these type of threads between immigrants and asylum seekers. This country actively needs immigration we don’t have enough doctors, nurses, social care staff and many other skilled occupations. These immigrants- of whatever nationality or race - pay taxes, that contribute to social benefits such as pensions, schools etc. Asylum seekers are seeking asylum; refuge from war, persecution etc. I’ve met asylum seekers from Syria who underwent horrific torture, rape etc. and who are now contributing to this country by working and being part if our community. Don’t lump everyone together. And please accept that some people are genuinely fleeing appalling situations, and we as an advanced nation have a duty to offer refuge, as we have done for hundreds of years. Look up Belgian refugees in WW1.

This country needs to train it own doctora and nurses and to give our own children opportunities to work. If we have shortages of staff it's predictable (demographics etc) and shows total lack of responsibility by governments.

Give our children a chance and let them have the jobs and pay tax here instead of relying on immigrants.

We need to sort out country out. We have failed if we need immigrant doctors and nurses when we have so many unemployed.

I also disagree with you about the economic contribution of migrants and the stats show the average migrant is often working in a minimum wage sector and paying in less tax than the cost of services they receive from the government (eg they cost us more than they pay in).

It's not just migrants who behave badly. I saw a drug addict urinating on a high street in daylight, yards away from where children were walking. The whole high street looked awful. Unimaginable about 20 years ago. Police driving down the pedestrianized high street with their a/c on doing nothing - they might as well not be there. Yesterday I saw several zombie addicts just staring at the ground.

The previous comments about it not mattering if we had to wait longer for NHS treatment, etc, I suppose it’s a relief that she didn’t mean a word of it?

Of course not. A lot of society has broken down due to longterm neglect, instead of working towards fixing the problems, governments are focused on the wrong issue. Allowing bigger problems.

I just don't understand why we keep doing it. I'd take a really hard line and not take any single men at all. I don't see the point of all the downsides of Brexit and we are still taking the bad things (uncontrolled borders and those stupid bottle top tethers). The fact that it keeps happening when it seems so stupid makes me think I must be out of step because if I had the power to decide we would be emptying all those guys out toute de suite.

Brexit did not secure our borders. It made it more difficult to return asylum seeks who cross on small boats. We could instead have taken our fair share of those granted asylum and vetted.

The problems we all face lack of health care housing cost of livong etc would be my priority.

Post Brexit policy is the reason. Leave ECHR, leave the refugee conversation. Detain and deport.

I've just seen an item on the BBC news about a young Afghan woman refugee who is rebuilding her life and working in the UK. She's not trafficking, abusing, stealing or predating on society.
Almost as if she values living in a liberal democracy where she has equality and opportunities.
That's the kind of refugee we should be supporting.

Yes, I for one find her selflessness in fighting to ensure other people across the country get to enjoy the true benefits of diversity and not hoard it all for herself beautifully inspiring. I must admit, I was of the belief that all politicians are lying scumbags just in it for themselves and their own client groups but Rachell has given me faith that some people actually do care about the average working man or woman.

Thank heavens for kinder, gentler politics.

This is a long thread, so I haven't read all of it. Among those undocumented young men coming here, it's quite possible Iran will be taking the opportunity of sending a few of theirs over to set up sleeper cells. We will only know should they succeed in their endeavours. Lets hope they don't. How can they all be kept under surveillance?

I believe I read somewhere, that the IRA, darlings of the left want migrants to leave Ireland Hmm Recently an American woman of Irish extraction was murdered by her asylum seeker lover, she described, before she was killed, her union as "safe love" He's now scarpered.

Of course there are sleeper cells here. There is apparently 45,000 on the MI5 watch list and thats just the ones they know about. Waving young men in from unstable middle Eastern countries is suidical (no pun intennded) and when we have another attack, all the hand wringing will inevitably begin. I stay well away from any crowded areas/events etc and I have advised family and friends to do the same...

Brexit or no Brexit makes little difference. Look at the EU and what’s happening. Migration issues are still high up the political agenda.

Can you say which EU countries return people easily?

Well Dolly, I'm sure we would rather be safe and alert than worry about being PC. Being politically correct doesn't keep you alive.

suburburban · 15/08/2026 09:29

Also slightly off topic but I would like the LAs to close up the council tax loophole of a prayer room, I don’t know much about this but was it for those who were ministers originally.

why can’t you pay CT like everyone else if you are using services, if you own your home then you can pay the tax

YourAmplePlumPoster · 15/08/2026 09:29

We will inevitably have another attack and asked to sing "Don't Look Back in Anger."
