The Jason Arday scandal

To think that Cambridge University’s reputation has been shot to pieces by the revelations about ex-professor Jason Arday?

Leeds Becket has a genuine history as a mechanic's institute. Currently I think good for Law.
Also Jason was employed at Roehampton Uni. Was a good Teacher training College. They have 150 years experience in Education. They should have done better at spotting him.

'Do I think teaching Baudelaire and de Musset would be affected by a rogue academic? Of course not'

Oh fgs of course content is affected if taught by a fake. If they make bollocks up on an everyday basis God knows what nonsense they are peddling in the classroom.

Edited

Not talking about their teaching I’m talking about the subject. When an academic is discredited their personal work may be retracted or cast aside and study of the subject continues regardless.

Leeds Beckett? An ex poly? Think we can give them a pass. It's the prestigious places that you'd think would spot a fake at a thousand paces.

This is a really snobbish attitude. In research terms, there really isn’t a hierarchy between former polys and redbrick

@noblegiraffe

I stand by the observation, I haven’t seen anything to contradict it.

Why would discussion of racism have a reputation? Unless of course you question its validity. If anything events highlight the importance of exactly this field of interest.

Do I think teaching Baudelaire and de Musset would be affected by a rogue academic? Of course not. The personal contribution would be binned and the conversation continued without them.

I’m not sure what damage you think I’m trying to limit? I don’t know the bloke, don’t work at Cambridge, don’t work in that field. I just have a different perspective to you that’s all.

Why would his actions make it harder for other black academics? (And why are they behind rather than in front?) Unless you believe he’s representative of
poc in general or his choices are somehow fundamental to his colour. What really makes life hard for black academics is the scale and tone of the reaction to this event and the ugly attitudes displayed in its wake.

Would you care to point out exactly what I have said that is racist?

Because it doesn't look good for someone trying to defend the reputation of discourse around racism to randomly accuse people of racism who are merely trying to discuss this issue.

Why would his actions make it harder for other black academics? (And why are they behind rather than in front?)

I'm not sure why this requires any further explanation, but if is work was focused on increasing black representation at universities and professorships and it is now completely in disrepute because he's a fraud, then anything he might have done which would have supported black academics coming up behind him (the meaning of this seems obvious to me, not sure why you don't understand), is all in the bin, isn't it?

Do we have three universities that have been made fools of?
Glasgow which I thought was a heavyweight, genuine Premier League
John Moore's Liverpool which is a lightweight kind of place
Jesus College Cambridge which really should know better.
Any more?

Durham where he was Associate Professor of Sociology!

This is from the press release on his appiintment to the chair inCambridge.

He eventually published his first paper in 2018. The same year, he successfully secured a Senior Lectureship at Roehampton University before moving on to Durham University, where he was an Associate Professor of Sociology. In 2021, Arday became a Professor of Sociology of Education at the University of Glasgow’s School of Education, making him, at the time, one of the youngest professors in the UK.

I have a close friend who is a senior lecturer at Leeds Beckett and apparently they consider themselves in the Morrisons bracket - as in a cut above a B&M bargains University but they don't claim to be an M&S University either. I'm not in the field of academia so I can't really vouch for this!

More recently there was the Grievance studies affair in which 3 authors managed to get 4 bogus papers published in peer reviewed journals. Some of the topics were so absurd it is genuinely hard to understand how anyone took them seriously. I keep wondering if this case is a hoax too.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grievance_studies_affair

Thanks, that was an interesting read.

What was rather depressing about the whole thing though was the assertion by many that the whole thing was rendered invalid by the lack of a control group which it was assumed would show that hoax articles would most likely be accepted in journals across many disciplines.

Which is a depressing thought, however I've heard that due to universities being under pressure to churn out research, there are loads of fake AI slop articles being published in even science and medicine e.g. https://x.com/addictedtoigno1/status/2085343928778133875?s=61&t=U9XrcF693-JpMxeIueYG7g

So maybe they're all at it.

If they couldn't - is that because their line of work is indistinguishable from bullshit? - I think you may have hit the nail on the head there.

His 'specialism' is the experience of Black academics in higher education.

The woman interviewing him - Hilary Cremin - has a specialism in 'peace and conflict' in schools.

Given that Hilary Cremin is also a pseudo-academic spouting a load of hippy shit and calling it academic research, she is hardly best placed to judge another fraud when she sees one.

However, there is also the reality that she wouldn't know anything about what Arday was 'researching' because it's not in her line of 'specialism' at all.

So I can see how he might have blagged his way past panels in interviews if he was being interviewed by people with no knowledge of his very narrow field of 'research' - if you haven't read widely in the 'literature' being produced by 'academics' in this area, then you won't be able to challenge or critically evaluate what someone is saying in an interview setting.

That being said, a cursory look at his published output would tell you he didn't have a robust enough research background to justify being given such a prestigious post, so I really can't see how anyone involved in hiring Arday is going to get out of this with their reputation intact.

Furthermore, I would be very, very sceptical if someone applied to a post after having jumped ship very quickly from ALL of their previous academic positions. He barely stayed 18 months anywhere. Very unusual in a profession where a permanent job is highly sought after, especially for someone so early in their career. I can't believe this didn't raise any eyebrows or prompt any concerns.

Reminds me of a former colleague (pre teaching) who was a 'change consultant' for fundraising departments in charities. He would breeze in on very highly paid temporary consulting contracts, make all sorts of promises about how he would turn things around and bring in the big bucks, talk endlessly about all his contacts and connections, and then leave after 12 months with another prestigious organisation on his CV, without having achieved anything of note - because the reality is, it takes much longer than a year to see the results of fundraising efforts. None of the applications he made for the charity I was working for came off - we got absolutely zero income from his involvement. However, by the time we knew that, he was already 6 months into his next job. An absolute charlatan - and yet he's still at it, a decade later, because he always leaves before he's found out.

What I'm really struggling to understand is who is all this stuff being written for?

I mean, he's in the faculty of education. Presumably there's loads of them all around the country bimbling around writing these lofty tomes (or maybe piffling pamphlets). But as a teacher, we're not using this stuff. We're certainly not even spending time reading it. I mean, when was your last INSET from a Cambridge academic? We want boots on the ground chalkface experienced people telling us how to get to grips with the actual issues of the day in a practical way. So who is this 'faculty of education' stuff for, if not those working in education?

SevenYellowHammers · Today 18:19

I’m about a third through the YT discussion where JA says he was in 7 up. I’ve stopped because I’ve stuff to do and it was sending me to sleep !

However! I don’t know if people either don’t know or have conveniently forgotten that there were many other incarnations of 7 up across UK and the world.

Many of the British ones have “cast” lists available but the one that JA would have been the perfect age for (14 Up in 2000) doesn’t have a cast listing frustratingly.

Maybe he auditioned for it, was dropped wasn’t very interesting, whatever I don’t know. This isn’t me clinging to anything to make a point, at the end of the day it will not make an iotas difference to me whatsoever but it’s an interesting thought.

Seems odd to lie when the South African lady says that it’s been recorded at start. I have not got to anything about Birkbeck yet.

Sometimes for a joke I tell people I went to Oxford Uni . Which I did, I attended St Katherine’s and did a course about night duty in social care which contributed to my BTEC in housing studies😂 . Then did my degree and post grad at a lovely Marxist institution on the Holloway Road.

Proof indeed that nobody proofread it before submission, and no real person reviewed it. Bloody awful. I can understand when the public say they've lost faith in scientists.

JA has already tried, rather unconvincingly, to excuse that fuck up:

Last night Professor Arday said that when he talked of 'Seven Up', he didn't mean 'Seven Up' the famous TV series, which followed children at seven-year intervals in the format he described. He says that in fact he was referring to 'a local community and parent-led initiative developed around the Ubuntu principle that "it takes a village to raise a child".

I can’t find it! The Guardian generously let me read an article (while selling me a Nissan) on the 6th that REPORTED the AV clip but I don’t know anyone who has WATCHED it. If you post it and I see / hear it and it’s not that AI generated voice, then I’ll happily concede with good grace.

The Guardian article conceded that it wasn’t “impossible” for him to run marathons on a hairline injury too. Wasn’t there a World Cup footballer who played on a fractured leg?

Honestly, I don’t know what is true anymore- about this or many things. Trump is having peace talks with Iranians, Iranians say he isn’t. Which is true? The BBC does run The News on its channel anymore it’s called ‘verified’ . WTF is happening?

but my point is that Facebook, Reddit, X, Daily Mail and Telegraph are all trumpeting that it was impossible for him to be part of 7 Up and that is being shared over and over but it wasn’t impossible for him at all!

It was impossible for him to have been on the two UK versions, one he was born too late for and the other too early. The TV channel it aired on have also confirmed he was not connected with the UK versions. The premise of the programme, and the fact he lived in London all his childhood, ruled out versions abroad. Then of course he admitted himself he was lying and wasn't in the programme but meant something else entirely!

Would you care to point out exactly what I have said that is racist?

What’s the point? You deny it and we get into a Monty Python argument/contradiction. I accept you don’t accept it and that’s fine.

It doesn’t look good to claim to be discussing racism in a non-racist way but fail.

Why would the issue of increasing black representation at universities and their faculties stand and fall on one man? Unless you think he’s the only person with this pov and it dies with him?

Increasing representation of poc in tertiary education is a valid goal irrespective of the rights and wrongs of one individual. It’s not the concept that’s in disrepute merely the man.

Anything be would have done is in the bin as he’s gone. But a similar role can be filled by more intelligent and more honest academics and the discussion continues.

I have read some of the Nathan Cofnas articles on Substack. The quote about only 0.7% of POC attending Harvard if they were to be admitted on SATS results alonevwas a figure provided by Harvard itself after Asian students sued Harvard for discriminating against them. Something which went all the way to the Supreme Court. This led to their positive discrimination policies. He also published a paper about how the right wing attracts mainly low IQ people which nobody at Cambridge found objectionable. Lol 😆
