I’m not talking the “oh yeah I whack a teabag in my baggage”, i’m talking the type of stuff most people would never dream of taking.

I take small electricians clamp pegs. They're brilliant for everything: towels, fixing rucksacks and tents, making shade, shower that doesn't stay up, entertaining the toddler...

I do this too, for every trip! Pillows are such a personal taste, hotel ones are rarely my type!

I once bought an extension lead with a two pin plug and three pin sockets. I think it's illegal to sell them now in the UK. I don't bother now because most hotels have usb sockets and I don't take any electrical stuff.

I take about ten different drugs a day. Plus a very extensive medical/ first aid kit which has all been used at some point. Including an emergency dental kit with a sterile needle. I could never travel hand luggage only as there'd be no room left for clothes.

@Auburngal- re the couple leaving £10 for a broken mug. I’m wondering what would the owners usually expect? from the UK and left £5 for a broken glass. I imagine that was too much? But didn’t want to assume and I thought it might be an inconvenience for the owner.

I took my own favourite little kitchen knife to a U.K. AirBnB recently, because I never find their knives as good.
But I forgot to pack it when we left! 😰😰

Plastic measuring jug. Handy for cooking, even more handy to fill plastic water bottles up from some sinks. At least 1 bottle of dilute juice. Small kitchen knife. Own tin opener that I know works...

We've got a folding kettle because not all Spanish/Italian apartments have kettles. And I cant live without my tea

Yes OH takes a hot water bottle for me and then I usually end up using it for tummy or back ache

The only really unhinged ones on the thread are:

Flint and steel in case the plane crashes

I don't take anything that weird.
Hot water bottle unless it's really warm so my feet don't take an hour to unfreeze. They are even cold tonight and apparently it's 20 degrees.

Inspired by the thread I might start taking my pillow and case, CO monitor and clothes pegs or tape to hold curtains closed.

Always take paracetamol... I had to wait in a huge pharmacy queue to be charged £7 for a packet in Croatia last year. Took for granted being able to buy it everywhere for under £1 in the UK!

Those little plastic bags which are like freezer bags, but make ice cubes.. there is never enough ice & for unknown reasons I seem to have a deep mistrust of the ice cube trays you find in rental villas.. I also take a lime squeezer & some margarita salt, and will now add a carbon monoxide detector. That covers the essentials..

Leftover zofran (nausea meds) from pregnancy, which saved us after contracting a stomach bug at Centerparcs. Delightful. I now won't travel without some in case.

DP always makes us take a torch, has done since I’ve been with him, we’ve had to use it once in the 22 years but he still insists on it 😊

I always take a small clothes horse, as much to use in hotels as well as when self-catering. There's rarely enough room to hang towels for three people in a hotel bathroom, add the swimming towels and swimwear and there's no space at all.
Maybe this isn't that mad, but the last time we needed a new family car I took it with me to the garage so that I could check the boot space on the test drives. (BTW it fits on the parcel shelf of a Ford Focus. 😁).

Bought a little wardrobe with 2 rails on, and some hanging sectioned things to go on it. There's never enough wardrobe space and we don't bring loads ! Saves so much looking for stuff. My brain can't do with stuff being everywhere. Husband doesn't even unpack his bag, we have very different attitudes !

Crikey, I think I go the other way. Are there no shops where you all go to on holiday?

Went on a 3 month camping/ cycling trip in Europe once with no sleeping bag or hairbrush, and airbeds that punctured and had to be blown up several times each night. We were quite cold and eventually had to use jamjars wrapped in a towel as ersatz hot water bottles. We didn't have the space to carry a sleeping bag. And I had to use a fork for a hairbrush. But I survived. Even survived the one day when we were 90k from the nearest shop and had next to no food left so had to forage for herbs and nuts. I wouldn't choose to do again, but it's things like this that make adventures.

I think the wardrobe is the best one 😆

Not to say that there aren't some well thought through ideas on here, I do think that some people are slightly over-prepared though!
