Trying to cover all bases.

I’m not talking the “oh yeah I whack a teabag in my baggage”, i’m talking the type of stuff most people would never dream of taking.

I feel like the size of first aid kit I take on holiday with me might be verging on the unhinged, but I like to be prepared! If one of my family has a serious accident whilst suffering from terrible diarrhea and back pain, I'll be ready for it!

TAD skeleton key.
Its a little tool that acts as a screwdriver, pry bar, nail puller box cutter yadda yadda.
Really surprising how often i use it so it comes everywhere with me.

I dont consider mine unhinged but...

I always take a carbon monoxide detector! 4.99 on amazon. One of the biggest causes of deaths abroad.

Everyone I tell laughs and then quietly buys their own. Im saving the world one detector at a time!

Just me quietly adding my spare carbon monoxide monitor to my luggage

Brilliant idea!!

Faircastle · 05/08/2026 15:38

I always bring a crochet kit, and if I'm going away for more than a weekend I also bring a spare hook and extra yarn, just in case.

Gardenisablooming · 05/08/2026 15:41

2 separate trips last year..
First trip ds 16 unpacked a High Viz jacket...
Next trip he produced a lint roller.

He's a funny lad !!

I take a just started toilet roll. One with about 90% left. I know they can be bought everywhere but I don't go anywhere without (most of) one of my own.

NotAnotherScarf · 05/08/2026 15:52

If I am going to somewhere I am not sure of safety wise, I always pack a rubber door stop. I use it to wedge the hotel door closed. Its very difficult to push thd door open with it in place especially on any type of carpet

UnbeatenMum · 05/08/2026 15:53

I take all the medicine in my house. Just because it's already in a locked box and so it's easier to pack the box than sort out what we might and might not need. Otherwise I think I'm fairly normal.

Where are you getting for 4.99? Looks like they're 20 quid online. Thanks!

BMW58 · 05/08/2026 16:07

Even £20 is cheap to save your life.........🙄

AnnDroidAnnDroid · 05/08/2026 16:13

Not a packing one but I always book the emergency exit aisle and wear lace up boots on the aeroplane, I watched a documentary once about a crash and one of the survivors said people were trampling over other passengers to get out and shoes were coming off, if there is a crash I want to be prepared.

Realistically if there’s a crash you’re dead, no point worrying!

My husband packs protein powder, some in a sandwich bag and a portion in a protein shaker ready to add water. We ALWAYS get stopped. I just walk away from him and wait now.

But you’re supposed to take your shoes off in water so they don’t pull you under the water, so slip on shoes would be better, in case of a water landing, no?

My batshit packing includes one of those emergency car seatbelt cutters/window breakers though so I can’t talk, really 🤭

But without the boots I may not make it as far as the water!

Forgot to add we only travelled from England to Scotland!

Ginmonkeyagain · 05/08/2026 17:03

My tendency to take large pack of M&S assorted mints with me on any journey over an hour or so is starting to look pretty sane by comparison.

Ilovecheeseyah · 05/08/2026 17:03

An extra pair of knickers?

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 05/08/2026 17:05

I take my coffee machine on holiday. Not a little nespresso one, but a full blown Jura barista style one that grinds the beans/heats the milk for you.

Obviously this is for UK holidays. 😁

ZippyPeer · 05/08/2026 17:06

I know someone who takes an extension lead. They hate not being able to charge their phone by the bed

SummerInSun · 05/08/2026 17:08

Always take a handful of dishwasher tablets if er are going self-catering. Places never leave enough and while you can buy them anywhere, you then need to lug most of an unused packet home or leave them behind (and they are expensive!)
