Fuming about directions woman

HowardsWahey · Yesterday 15:34

I live in a seaside town that, at this time of year in particular, is very popular with tourists. Therefore it's quite common to be stopped and asked for directions or local information. I never mind, but I think a bit of gratitude doesn't go amiss.

Some woman and her husband stopped me today and asked if there was anywhere nearby they could get some fish and chips. I started saying, "Yes, if you walk to the bottom of the road just behind us, you'll see a big retail park with Sainsbury's and Lidl..."

Then, when I'm mid-sentence, she cuts me off and says, "Oh that's lovely - but we just fancied some fish and chips", saying "fish and chips" as if I was a bit simple and needed them explained to me. I gave her a bit of a look and said, "And if you'd let me finish, I'd have told you which turning to take at the retail park for the fish and chip shop".

I thought she'd have the sense to realise she shouldn't have interrupted, but she made a sort of huffing noise and said, "Well THAT'S a bit rude! I was only asking." So I said, "And I was only answering - but you interrupted me. THAT'S rude. Enjoy your chips". And I walked off.

What the hell is wrong with some people?! Someone takes time out of their day to help them out, and they won't take two seconds to listen! I hope she and her droopy-faced husband are still wandering about desperate to find their cod and chips 😄

You were both rude - can’t see the big deal.Sounds like a fairly ordinary interaction.

What had her husband’s face got to do with it?

BeardySchnauzer · Yesterday 15:39

I’m feeling a bit sorry for the husband here tbh

I don't see how I was rude. I was the one taking time out of my day to help and I was the one she interrupted!

what did the husband do wrong?

He had the nerve to stand there with his face all droopy?

what did the husband do wrong?

He took his droopy face for a day out at the seaside where the locals' faces point ever upwards towards the sun.

At least you were quick thinking OP with your reply. Usually in situations like that I'm left a bit dumbfounded

She was stupid and rude.

I don't see how I was rude. I was the one taking time out of my day to help and I was the one she interrupted!

You met her energy with the same, that’s the problem. How relevant was the big retail park with Sainsbury’s and Lidl to where the chip shop was anyway?

Some people are like that though. She may have misheard or misunderstood or just been lairy,

You could have walked away but you chose to argue with her. The fact that you chose in your post to make a personal comment about her husband’s face doesn’t show you in the best light either.

Forget it. World is full of cunts

WinterSunglasses · Yesterday 15:46

Good for you. I don't see how you were rude. She was impatient and interrupted you, then told you you were rude for pointing out her rudeness. But MN loves to turn this sort of post back on the OP

what did the husband do wrong?

He was married to her - doh!

EveryNowAndZen · Yesterday 15:47

You weren't rude. Some people do not have the attention span to follow a set of directions or instructions. They'll hurry you up or interrupt even the briefest explanation to 'get to the point', not understanding that the context, such as orientational cues, matters. I've got two family members like this and it's so frustrating. You can't win.

what did the husband do wrong?

Failed to use Google Maps to find them a fish and chip shop?

And what’s the relevance to his face?

Ignore some of these posters OP, that woman was rude.

She can take herself, and ole droopy face and walk off the end of the pier.

PuppyMonkey · Yesterday 15:52

Nobody in the entire history of the world has ever listened properly to someone giving them directions anyway. Grin

I see we have another one!

Read the OP; you'll see how the retail park was relevant.

Haha - those are the directions I should have given her! 😄

Yeah, I can see why she thought you were rude.🙄

CoffeeCantata · Yesterday 16:04

I know what you mean, OP. Some people are really impatient and/or manage to imply that you’re stupid and haven’t grasped what they’re asking.

OK, it was unfortunate that the tone of the interaction became unpleasant but she was rude. It would have been more understandable if it was a loo she was desperately seeking!
