Should I fly to America for a gig?

So my favourite singer ever is playing a series of gigs in Utah in October. It’s over the weekend my kids are with their dad. Is it mental to fly there Thursday see the gigs Saturday and Sunday and fly back Monday? Get the kids back Tuesday? I can afford it - I’d be going alone. I’m scared . Would anyone else/ has anyone else done something like this?

Go go go!!! Could you maybe rope in their Dad or another family member to have them an extra night or two so you would not be wrecked.

Er, nope. Interesting that you think it’s others who need to educate themselves though. You keep using the internet though, not to mention the carbon footprint of whatever device it is you’re using to access it, and telling yourself you’re not part of the problem. Lol.

Definitely go for it but as a PP said - look into cancellation insurance that will cover flights as well as the gig.

DD and I have done this twice. Flew to New York to see Bruce Springsteen at Madison Square Garden and then to see Bon Jovi in New Jersey. We used to plan our trips to NY to see plays that were on. A friend was taken to Chicago to see Oasis. It’s a great idea.

I went to Utah earlier in the year (not for a gig) and it's a long way! 7 hour time difference. You have one day to acclimatise after the jet lag and also the elevation can be challenging. Salt Lake City is at the same altitude as the top of Ben Nevis, if you're going up into the mountains you might feel it even more. I had a great time over there, everyone I met was very friendly and welcoming. Try the dirty sodas!

Yeah this is the bit that worries me- I’ve only gone long haul twice before, very long time ago when I was in my twenties… I just kind of ignored the jet lag and carried on - not sure peri menopausal me will be able to do that !

I am the same life stage as you. Just try to get a bit of sleep on the plane (easier said than done) and stay awake as long as you can on arrival. You can get melatonin over the counter in the US which might help sleeping on the way home. If you are going to be in the SLC area be aware that nearly all shops are closed on a Sunday, although public transport runs.

Weve been to European countries a few times to gigs. Tickets are often cheaper, and a few days away, travel and gig have cost us less than the same gig at ,for example, the O2.

Worth noting one persons carbon footprint flying to Utah and back is equivalent to about 10,000 miles in a ICE vehicle, or 20,000 in an electric.

That’s why the OP’s question is impossible to answer because I wouldn’t go to the bottom of my garden to see her. In fact, I’d chuck her out. But I’m sure stuff that I like might evoke similar responses so how can anyone tell!

Would seeing him in Utah add to the experience? Like is he authentic to that scene? I’m seeing my favourite band (30 odd years of fandom) in Cardiff in November because they’re Welsh and it’s part of the vibe. So I’d say go if you’re feeling it. Is there a fan community whereby you could meet up with people and make it safer?

Can you get a direct flight to Salt Lake City and then back? Changing flights is going to make for a long trip then you have to get to the venue. Direct would be a lot easier.

I think it's doable even without direct flights but you'll be burnt out a bit when you return. Enjoy the shows if you go.

I did similar. Went to NY to see a play i kept missing in London. Had a great short break. Dropped DC at their dad's, straight to airport. Back on the red eye 4 days later and into work. Great memories.
