It's understandable that people have different views on decisions like this. These situations are rarely straightforward, and it's probably worth waiting to see the full picture before judging too quickly. Whatever your opinion, it's a debate that affects everyone.

I don't want the US using our air bases, but the guy hasn't even been in power for a week yet. I would rather that he takes the time to understand and consider any big decisions rather than rushing in to change everything without having really thought things through.

Our own national security is deeply intertwined with the US. Whilst ordinary people have the luxury of being black and white on issues like this, Prime Ministers - who actually have real responsibility for the country - have to be a bit more circumspect.

Compromise is usually the reality of politics, but this always gets some people really angry!

The UK has never bombed Argentina. The RAF attacked Argentinian forces in Port Stanley while they were occupying the Falklands in 1982, but did it from the RAF base on Ascension (British territory, although the base is shared with the US), and of course the Royal Navy attacked Argentinian forces from carriers.

The US was supportive to the UK, but feared open support drawing in the Soviet Union on the Argentinian side. The US provided Sidewinder missiles to the RN (specifically the 9-Lima variant which could be fired from in front of the enemy aircraft instead of having to be fired from behind - this made a huge difference) and backfilled a lot of the RAF's operations in Europe, which allowed RAF assets to be deployed to the South Atlantic. They also provided fuel and other logistical support at Ascension.

I think I’m slow on the uptake, but I’m starting to get a bit suspicious about these unending posts criticising Burnham. He’s barely got his foot through the door and Parliament isn’t back until 1 September.

He has only been PM since Monday. I don't think many women will have beenin touch with him about the early release scheme, given it was nothing to do with him before then? And if they had, the fact that he paused the scheme almost immediately after becoming PM would indicate he had listened to them.

Oh come on, it’s not as if he has any choice in the matter. He can either ‘refuse permission’, risking retaliation from Trump, and be ignored anyway. Or he can make the pretence that the decision actually rests with the UK government and save a bit of face.
