AIBU to think this driver was a massive dick?

The other day I was driving from my town to the next town, along roads I know very well, stuck behind a man (maybe late 50s) in a convertible BMW who was pootling along at 40mph on a 60mph road. Conditions were clear, roads were dry, it was daylight. Having followed him for a few miles, I got to the one part of the road where you can safely overtake, so I did, in a safe and controlled way. It is a long, straight stretch of road, nothing dangerous in what I did.

Something switched in this dickhead’s brain, and he raced along the road to catch up with me, practically got in my boot he was so close, and repeatedly flashed his lights at me. He carried on tailgating me throughout the next town, literally inches from my bumper, following me every time I turned off, and sporadically flashing his lights. I was actually heading to McDonald’s with DD and I was actually a bit panicked at that point, wondering if he was going to follow me in there to kick off at me. I left it until the last second to indicate when I got to the Maccies roundabout, and kind of swerved off the roundabout hoping he wouldn’t have enough time to decide to follow me. Luckily he didn’t, but gave a long blast of his horn as he went around the roundabout.

It shook me up a bit. What the fuck was going on in his head? This may be relevant but I drive an Audi, which I haven’t had for long. Is there some kind of BMW/Audi rivalry that I don’t know about? Or was this bloke just a massive cock who likes to try and intimidate women?

Honestly who knows what sets some men off...I was driving my OH's Audi Q7 yesterday (I've driven minibuses professionally, I'm not one of those that can't tell the size of the car)...on the left lane of a 50mph dual carriage way approaching a roundabout with red traffic lights and slowed down gradually in line with the rest of the traffic...had some dickhead in a pimped out transit custom weaving about behind me right up my arse...continued through the roundabout when he then sped past me, nearly crashed into my front wing and stopped dead cutting me off 😳came barreling out the van shouting and swearing that I was driving like an arsehole on my phone????? I was so confused! Had my 2.5yo in the back, definitely wasn't on my phone or distracted in any way and definitely wasn't driving like an arsehole?! I gave him an absolute mouthful (after double checking the door was locked) but was shaking like a leaf. Unfortunately he had stopped so close in front that I couldn't see the reg and he sped off so fast through another set of lights that I then got stopped at...I did tell him I was sending my non existent dashcam footage to the police though so I hope he's worried 😂DS who is obsessed with vehicles asked 'what did that man in the ford say?' but otherwise seemed ok...hopefully he doesn't repeat any of the words he heard from either of us 😬

I have heard lots of jokes about BMW/Audi but not known of any real road altercations. My very cheap car probably doesn't incite them. The only current BMW driver I know is a very sweet guy who is always doing kind things (don't know him that well but seems a safe driver, not fitting the stereotype!)
Just ignore people who drive like that, or report to the police if he did something really dangerous.

Oh both me and DD were both quite clearly laughing at him (deep down I was a bit concerned about where this was going but I didn’t want DD to freak out).

I had similar but an older man doing 18mph in a 30. When it changed to a dual carriageway and 40mph, I immediately switched went into the right lane and overtook him (not even hitting 30mph to do so!), he then undertook me on a roundabout, stopped his car then got out and shouted at me!

I don’t think he expected to get his arse handed to him from my passenger (who is a police officer but was off duty! 🤣).

Well some men just can't stand confidence in women, especially behind the wheel of a car, we're all supposed to crash our gears and be scared of the accelerator.
I slow down - safely, when being tail gated, and if I'm behind another car I back off from that more, I can't control the car behind me, if they're too close and don't react fast enough if I need to brake for any reason then they're going to hit me, but I can lessen the potential impact by slowing down and making sure I don't get shunted into the car in front.
It's the ones who sit up your arse when you're behind someone else doing 40 in a 60 with no safe overtaking opportunities, or in a stream of traffic that's behind a HGV or similar that make me 🤷🏼‍♀️ I mean tailgating me isn't going to do anything, even if I were to be intimidated by them into driving faster, I can't go anywhere!

Every day I’m tailgated when I’m driving at the speed limit. What is wrong with modern drivers? I’d love to know what these people are like in the rest of their lives when they intimidate and take risks for no reason when behind the wheel.

I drive a small city car and last week was tailgated by a white van driver for about 15 minutes through winding country lanes.

I’m not sure what he wanted me to do as it was very narrow and with difficult bends and such evil potholes that you just can’t put your foot down.

He was right up behind me, hooting, flashing and mock pulling out as if to overtake on corners.

It was really intimidating, but I held my nerve and concentrated on driving safely and looking ahead rather than at his comically enraged face up so close in my rear mirror.

I’m currently researching dash cam's!

I had someone do similar recently. 7.30am and a van pulled out of a side road near my house on a 30mph road and I’m not joking when I say he drove at 10mph. I assumed at first he was faffing with something as people often do when they’ve just left the house like writing in his sat nav etc. He carried on going round the next roundabout the same speed. Then we got to a long straight 40mph bit and he’s still at 10mph. I’d been behind him for about 2-3 minutes by this point. Which I know doesn’t sound long but when you’re crawling along for no reason it is a long time. So after no indication he was planning on speeding up I went round him. Perfectly safely. No other cars around. Long straight road. Daylight. He seemed to go nuts at this. Sped right up behind me for the rest of the road. He didn’t beep or flash his lights but sat almost in my boot until the next roundabout. I went to turn right and stopped as a car was coming from the right but he didn’t even slow down and drove straight out at 40mph in front of another car and he went straight on. He was lucky he didn’t get hit. So strange.

It happened to us except the chaser was a Range Rover and a female driver. DH was driving us in a BMW. She tailgated us for 20 odd miles on a B road. It was truly scary.

It's all about the driver not necessarily the vehicle.
