AIBU to think this driver was a massive dick?

The other day I was driving from my town to the next town, along roads I know very well, stuck behind a man (maybe late 50s) in a convertible BMW who was pootling along at 40mph on a 60mph road. Conditions were clear, roads were dry, it was daylight. Having followed him for a few miles, I got to the one part of the road where you can safely overtake, so I did, in a safe and controlled way. It is a long, straight stretch of road, nothing dangerous in what I did.

Something switched in this dickhead’s brain, and he raced along the road to catch up with me, practically got in my boot he was so close, and repeatedly flashed his lights at me. He carried on tailgating me throughout the next town, literally inches from my bumper, following me every time I turned off, and sporadically flashing his lights. I was actually heading to McDonald’s with DD and I was actually a bit panicked at that point, wondering if he was going to follow me in there to kick off at me. I left it until the last second to indicate when I got to the Maccies roundabout, and kind of swerved off the roundabout hoping he wouldn’t have enough time to decide to follow me. Luckily he didn’t, but gave a long blast of his horn as he went around the roundabout.

It shook me up a bit. What the fuck was going on in his head? This may be relevant but I drive an Audi, which I haven’t had for long. Is there some kind of BMW/Audi rivalry that I don’t know about? Or was this bloke just a massive cock who likes to try and intimidate women?

There’s no way the fucker would have done it if I was a bloke.

How do you know? there is male road rage towards other males all the time

Balloonhearts · 23/07/2026 23:18

Hold your clutch down and put in reverse. They absolutely shit themselves. I've never seen a tailgater back off so fast.

I guess he just didn’t like being over taken by a woman, the conditions you describe don’t seem to make you unreasonable.

if it helps, I drive a nice car. I get a lot of men in shit cars making merges in turn very difficult, or making it so they zoom off before me at traffic lights. It’s very strange.

I drive an old banger and men do this to me too (stop me merging, zoom off at lights etc). I think it's just a certain kind of man who does it to anyone no matter what the other person is driving. It makes them feel that they are better than the rest of us.

You should have used your squirters. Drivers of convertible cars will back off immediately if they get covered in screen wash. A colleague who drove a convertible Audi A4 mentioned this to me a long time ago and I can vouch for it.

OMG - WHY didn’t I think of this? 😂

To be fair, I temporarily drove my ex’s Fiat Doblo, or The Popemobile as we called it, and people (men) couldn’t bear being overtaken by that. I had lots of ‘I’m not having that’ responses on dual carriageways and they’d pull out and overtake me as soon as I’d overtaken them.

Tie your hair back and start wearing a stick on moustache whenever you drive anywhere.

PinkCatCushion · 23/07/2026 23:54

Man proves how manly he is by pressing foot down harder on a pedal than another person...

Blogswife · 24/07/2026 00:00

I think there are some men that just can’t bear to be behind a women driver .
What he did is actually illegal so if you have any dash cam footage send it in to the police .

tillyandmilly · 24/07/2026 00:03

I get you - but 40 is plenty on country road - my husband drives slowly around country lanes as you never know what's going to jump out of hedges - we always have a stream of traffic behind ha ha. I am not excusing his behaviour which was shocking and quite frankly intimidating- I would have reported him to the police

Darragon · 24/07/2026 00:05

I had a run-in with a very similar arsehole in an identical BMW. When I overtook, he aggressively leaned on his horn, overtook me then slammed his brakes on and drove down the 60 road at 30mph. I was stuck behind him for a few miles as it was a long straight road with no turn offs and after that behaviour, I thought it was best not to overtake him as he was clearly unhinged.

She didn’t say it was a piddly winding country road though??

youplonkerdave · 24/07/2026 00:12

@Owwdi there could have been something wrong with your car that he was trying to alert you to.

Maddy70 · 24/07/2026 00:14

Of course he's a dick. You should report him for dangerous driving

😂😂😂 if I get much further into perimenopause I might not even need the stick on one.

It wasn’t a country lane. It was a main road. A B road, but still a main road.

Nope nothing wrong with my car.

Simple. He was a bullying twat with a very tiny dick

Wipeywipey · 24/07/2026 12:07

OP another one is to laugh at them in an OTT way - they get very angry when they see you are unbothered by their aggressive antics or think their behaviour is childish. DD also waggles her baby finger at them if they get too close...It's a them problem, with zero logic.

Inmyuggs · 24/07/2026 12:18

Report the f wit!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 24/07/2026 12:18

I’ve got a fairly new (2 years?) Audi (before I had a Toyota Yaris) and yes, I get some men cutting me up or something like that or being annoyed that I’ve overtaken them. I was with a friend the other day and got an aggressive driver behind me for half a mile or so until I turned off. When my boyfriend drives the same car (I sometimes let him do so) he gets none of this aggressiveness.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 24/07/2026 12:21

How dare a woman over take him. He has testicles and a BMW! How dare you. Your temerity was totally unreasonable.

And they say women are too emotional. Fucking hell.

Actually I did have this (but less so) when I had my Yaris. Some men hate women drivers.

I’ve just remembered, a friend had a new convertible VW beetle which was her pride and joy. She’s the kind of person that’ll either laugh along with idiots or have a go. She’s swapped this car now though to a smaller one, non convertible (forget make) and says she gets far less bother now. Which is a pity as she liked driving the convertible beetle.

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 24/07/2026 12:28

That's the way driving is now, isn't it? You set off on a perfectly reasonable journey during which you execute and entirely normal manoeuvre and you encounter unwarranted road rage. And it's every. Single. Time.

There really is a serious attitude problem in this country, the roads are just one obvious example of it. Sad

SummerHols2026 · 23/07/2026 22:55

Was he particularly short? Either that or small cock.

I’d have reduced my speed down to 40 for the rest of the journey.

Course he has a small cock. He was driving a BMW.
