I think if he hadn't taken HMRC to court because he thought he was paying too much tax people might listen to him more on this issue.

I don't know his case but maybe he thinks the rules haven't been applied fairly. He might be happy to be taxed more if that's the rule. I saw Maureen Lipman being interviewed last night and she said she'd pay the extra no problem but she wasn't going to pay it voluntarily.

Then they'd be torn to shreds for virtue signalling. You can't win.

So if he felt his tax bill was wrong he should have no right to challenge it? He should just pay up? Seems very different to being legitimately taxed at a higher rate….

I often think these rich celebrities and wealthy people in general don't really have much of a clue about their money situation & just leave it to their accountants who are very adept at finding & applying tax loop holes.
Lineker is saying one thing, his accountants are no doubt doing another because that's what he pays them for.

Overall, I think it's virtue signalling and it's for the good press he gets.

He was a cultural icon in the 90s, he even had a play written about him that was also a TV film. Perhaps that was because the press liked him them.

He is not intelligent-unless your definition of intelligence is quite low. He is not intelligent according to the average definition but he can kick a ball.

He is not thoughtful because he has no thoughts of his own.

He does not have progressive values.

He spouts progressive values: this is very different to having arrived at these values through thought.
The reason he does this is because like many people who are a bit dim, he thinks spouting them makes him look intelligent. This is one of the great scams of our times and it is usually thick people who fall for it because they want to be thought of as intelligent.

He lives a decent life.

Well, maybe and maybe not because if he did he would have already paid more tax and led by example. He would see the laughability of saying this while having being embroiled in a row not to pay the taxes he owes.
He would not spill shit on Gaza and he would not say that men who want to say they are women are amongst the most persecuted people on earth.

If they really cared they could direct their money to specific charitable initiates of their choice and control to ensure money is well spent.

We don't even as well as them. We're a household in the 45p rate. No way in hell do we want to pay more tax. Or have our assets taxed (we have investments and property abroad).

I think we must suddenly have an influx of wealthy people on Mumsnet. All the posts about how unfair it is that multi millionaires or those with over 10 million in assets who might have to pay more tax. While the rest of get squeezed ever more.

He won his case. HMRC threatened an appeal which presumably their lawyers told them they’d lose because they didn’t bother. There was no settlement, just egg on HMRC faces.

Obviously, OBVIOUSLY, the point is that he and others believe and want to promote the idea that everyone above a certain income bracket should be taxed more.

Unless you are in this income bracket and do not believe this, I'm not sure why you'd try to tear this down. 🤷🏼‍♀️

No, what some people on MN see is the is the bigger picture beyond the few billion that the wealth taxes might bring.

The can see the damage to the housing market, the investment desirability of the country and the killing of any entrepreneurial aspirations.
