Yes, it's been tried in other countries and not worked.

Now going after big companies like Amazon and closing some of those tax loopholes I am totally on board with & hope Burnham goes this way.

Well, for one thing-he may actually do that. And for another, it’s not the sort of person who would do that he’s talking about-it’s the tax dodgers and tax evaders who do anything they can to avoid paying. And the people who whinge about how hard done by they are because they are expected to contribute to society.

May be Viscount Rothermere who's rag seems to be very vocal about tax and how bad the government is, could set an example and become UK tax resident. Personally I don't object to paying tax, what I object to is that I pay more because some people won't pay their fair share.

I want tax to be planned & used effectively.

If people make random donations, its unpredictable and can't be relied upon, it can be assumed as a cashflow for several years that can fund meaningful investment in services or capital projects the way that tax revenue can.

Honestly we all just need to pay a little bit more. Everyone. It is much, much easier to raise big sums by sticking a penny on the basic rate or on vat, than it is to try and put in a new wealth tax or higher rate band. For most lower income people the resulting improvement in public services etc is worth it.

Surely just a few donating is not the point? I think what he says is fair. I remember seeing Deb Meaden on twitter saying that the last tory shuffle in taxes made her better off, she thought was madness, and that she'd more than happy to pay more towards the UK.

The point this group are making is that the super rich have assets that grow, they are not income in the traditional sense so it’s not taxed unless it’s sold. Taxing this unearned asset growth at 2% over £10m will barely be noticed by them. Setting it at £10m should mean nobody gets scooped into the category through asset rich cash poor too

You can't leave it up to individuals to volunteer. Most won't.
