To add teacher on social media?

CocoBean22 · 22/07/2026 17:12

DD finished school last week and the teacher she had is moving to Australia to live and teach there.
DD has become very fond of the teacher and would like to keep in touch and is sad that she is leaving the school and moving away.

Is it acceptable to add teacher on social media to stay in touch now that the teacher has left the school and moved to the other side of the world?
Or is it still not appropriate?

Unless you have built a ‘bond’ with this teacher yourself. As in you have had many conversations, things in common etc etc then no. At first glance I thought well why not? She is just another adult who if you click with then you should be able to stay in touch. But reading through it seems it’s just about her seeing your daughter so now i think no, probably best not to.

I'm a teacher and I love my students, but I really don't want progress reports through social media once I move on.

Not to be goady, but…why do teachers say they “love” their students when they don’t?! Hopefully they like their students, they’re happy to see their students succeed, they take joy in their students…but if you never want to hear about them again after a school year is finished, no, you don’t love them.

And that’s okay! Loving your students isn’t a requirement of being a good teacher. I just don’t understand why teachers say this.

Because unlike the Eskimos and snow, we only really have one word for real affection. Love can mean so many things.
I loved my job. I loved my husband. The two feelings were very different though.

I loved the kids in my class. I love my daughters and granddaughters. But again, the feelings are different. We just don't have a wide enough vocabulary to distinguish between them.

It’s more for them to see what progress/ achievements DD has

OMG please tell me you did NOT just say this?? 🫣

Kirbert2 · 23/07/2026 01:21

My son's old teacher added me to social media when she left to teach at a different school. I don't see an issue personally.

Do you really think they will be interested? They won't be.

Not unless you, personally, are a friend of teacher.

No you don’t, you aren’t a teacher. You a a poster who posts in a specific way for a specific reason.

Im sure she was very fond of your daughter and she sounds like she made a positive impact on your child so yey. I worked in a nursery years ago and when I left to go be a nanny abroad some of the parents added me and it was nice to see the children I had as babies grow up to become adults themselves and scary!!

so jsut add her if she doesn’t want to accept she won’t and that’s fine.

Wanna bet?

Ibi · 23/07/2026 07:13

So the teacher thinks they are adding an adult, but you would be allowing your daughter to see her profile and posts? That’s doesn’t sit well with me.

😂😂

How odd

Rocknrollstar · 23/07/2026 07:26

I don’t know any teachers who are on social media under their real names. Definitely a no. DD has to learn that people move on and the teacher- pupil relationship ends.

Motherofacertainage · 23/07/2026 07:31

Kindly, if the teacher had wanted to keep in touch with your daughter or any of the students she would have left contact details before she left. How have you got her SM details? I’ve been a teacher for 30 years and there are very few students I keep in contact with. Rules have changed significantly over the years and I have a handful of ex students and their parents on SM, but only those I know through other parts of my lives - and in terms of parents, only those I knew before I taught their kids. It’s lovely your daughter had the connection with her teacher but the SM request is likely to be declined or ignored so it is probably a non issue.

CloudyWithAChanceOfCustard · 23/07/2026 08:09

Don’t do this…it’s not only overstepping personal and professional boundaries, you’d be putting the teacher in the awkward position of having to ignore your friend request! Just cringe! 😬

Oh dear lord OP!! This is really weird…why on earth do you thing the teacher (in her new job, in Australia!) will be remotely interested in your DDs progress!! She won’t!! I’m embarrassed for you!

Safeguarding guidance for teachers says no (at least at schools I’ve worked at)

Edited

I saw a primary school teacher on that naked dating show the other day! (Sorry can't remember the name of it...is it called Naked Attraction?). I couldn't believe that they thought it was appropriate!!

mrsneville · 23/07/2026 10:55

No. Puts teach in a horrible position. Don't do it.

shhblackbag · 23/07/2026 11:23

noctilucentcloud · 22/07/2026 22:28

To add another voice to the no, this is a terrible idea, don't do it. The teacher deserves to have a private social media for friends and family without having to worry about parents and ex-pupils. Don't put her in an awkward position.

This is really important, actually. I never added students or their parents. Don't make it weird.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 23/07/2026 11:42

pinkdyno · 22/07/2026 19:31

This. For sure.

I have I would say all the primary teachers in mine. Also in WhatsApp. Rural community. Very normal.

Rural community here too and absolutely not normal.
