AIBU as to disagree with ashes being scattered in a public place?

AIBU?

Going to a music in August. Great. On the Facebook group for said festival, someone wants to scatter their dad's ashes at the festival in the arena area.
The weather is due to be hot and dry and I don't like the idea that could be inhaling someone's ashes in the arena/tredding the ashes in the ground.
The comments seem to be mixed with some saying go for it and others to be against it like me.

A couple of years ago, a whole ride at a theme park had to shut down after someone scattered ashes mid-ride. So I suppose I have pre-conceptions about these things.

I just feel like there is a better place to scatter ashes without affecting the general public?

I want some of mine scattered in the hall of the first Northern Soul niter I went to.
It would be a tiny amount and daresay I'll get hoovered up.

CurlyKoalie · 22/07/2026 18:02

Scattering ashes where they can fall on other people is gross and selfish. There are so many ways and times that ashes can be either scattered or buried discetely without causing distress to other people.

Whatsherusername · 22/07/2026 18:42

I saw a post discussing this, if im correct, it was a small amount, and would be by the lemmy/motor head bar as this held great significance to their dad. I actually see no problem with this. I think its a lovely way to remember dad, at a music festival doing something as a family/friends at something the dad enjoyed. Tbh think a fair bit of context has been left out if its the same post I saw earlier

There's a bit of ds in the 9th hole on a putting green

AgnesMcDoo · 22/07/2026 18:56

You are going to breathe in others smoke, vapes, BO, and goodness knows what else.

I really wouldn’t worry about it.

And you are never going to know.

Happysummerrain · 22/07/2026 19:06

The ground and air are hardly clean. Dogs use the world as a toilet. The ash won’t affect you; it could, however, have a positive impact on the person scattering the ashes. I’d imagine it’ll be be done carefully and not right next to a person in a gust of wind. And even so, what are the odds that you’ll be that person and be covered in ashes?

AgileMentor · 22/07/2026 19:11

I mean they throw cups of piss at festivals and most people are on some sort of drug. Let them do what they want with their dad. This is just another why doesn’t the world revolve around me post.

thatgreenjuniper · 22/07/2026 19:12

Sorry for the precious people, but death happens. Dead bodies is a thing. Nothing will happen to you if someone scatters ashes near you.

BIossomtoes · 22/07/2026 19:15

My parents went on the golf course on my mum’s birthday. A tiny portion were flown to their favourite holiday destination and scattered in a garden they loved. Both public places. I can’t see the problem.

Whilst tipping my Gramps in to my Nan’s urn to mix them (as per their wish), my aunt accidentally tipped some of my Gramps onto me, I stood up in horror and it was more than we thought and came all off me onto the carpet.

We had no choice but to put him up the hoover (thick pile carpet) and we laughed hysterically through our tears as it was my Nan & Gramps’s sense of humour!

They met at age 15 in Trafalgar Square (married at 16), spent every Easter in Croyde Bay for a week from the 70s right through until their children were older and grandchildren then joined and carried on until my Gramps passed in 2013. We also spent a lot of summers on Redington Beach, Florida. So there are tiny little packets of mixed ashes scattered in all of those special places.

Nothing wrong with it in my eyes.

PoppieCock · 22/07/2026 19:17

In a hot and dry arena you're going to be inhaling all manner of things.

I wouldn't worry about some ash.

  • Can I scatter Ashes at Sea?
  • Shieldhall will have two scheduled sailings in 2026 when ashes may be scattered at sea. The first is on Saturday 27 June during our ‘Titanic in Miniature’ sailing which is staged between 3.30pm – 7pm. The second is on Sat 5 September, when Shieldhall is staging a ‘Steam to the Solent’ cruise and Merchant Navy Day Service between 3.30pm – 7pm. There is no charge for ashes scatterings other than the cost of cruise tickets. Please contact the Ticket Manager on 023 8155 0242 or email: [email protected] to discuss further. The Ticket Manager can put you in touch with the Shieldhall Padre, The Reverend Dennis Mould, who will be present on board and can conduct a short service if you wish.

You are being super unreasonable. The daughter of the man just asked a question of how to get permission and they want to do it besides Lemmy's Bar. No where on that post did they say it was going to be in the arena or chucking them in the mosh pit. Tbh I'm surprised someone in The metal community has objected to this as they are usually a kind and compassionate crowd. If it makes you feel uncomfortable just don't go to Lemmy's bar but I'm sure they said about doing it to the side of it anyway so it would have zero effect on you

Amberjane41 · 22/07/2026 19:20

And in the words of Ricky Gervais. If any of it does land on you I hope it's his cock 😂

OwlCalledSage · 22/07/2026 19:28

I think it’s fine as I said upthread, but you wouldn’t want to breathe ashes in. They are ground up bone and quite sandy in consistency, so quite irritating on the airways, I’d imagine.

ObelixtheGaul · 22/07/2026 19:33

The relative is politely asking about permission. It is, therefore, up to the venue to decide if this can be done, and how. Given that the relative is asking the question, I'd say they will be a bit more considerate about it than OP is giving credit for, and I am sure the venue will have some sort of policy on how this can be accommodated without impacting the other festival-goers.

I doubt anyone is going to be emptying an urn in the middle of the mosh pit during the headline act. There's barely elbow room, let alone space to get the ashes out and scatter them. Some PPs have said it will be by Lemmy's bar, not in the arena anyway.

HRTQueen · 22/07/2026 19:34

I wouldn’t be bothered knowing ashes had been scattered in an area and I
was around the area at the time

but I would be bothered if it became windy and I was to find the ash on me and I think most people would be

not sure why they announced what they planned to do they could have done this without raising concerns from others

Any1ForTennis · 22/07/2026 19:35

You won't inhale them, they are surprisingly chunky not featherlight dust.

ChirpyTealFox · 22/07/2026 19:56

We scattered DF around a local Park where he used to walk daily/fish 🤷‍♀️

Because they’re bones ground up after the cremation process, not actual ash.

ALooseAffiliationOfMillionaireShortbread · 22/07/2026 20:18

My mother's ashes came in a bag that had written on it, in massive capital letters, that it MUST NOT be scattered. May have even claimed to be illegal, I can't remember but they were very keen you NOT scatter or bury ashes anywhere other than a proper burial plot OR ELSE.

rwalker · 22/07/2026 20:22

It’s a no from me ashes give my the creeps

PurpleBadgers · 22/07/2026 21:37

Wouldn’t bother me at all.

Pistachiocake · 22/07/2026 21:43

I wouldn't do it too near other people. A public place, yes. When it's busy/crowded, no.
