AIBU as to disagree with ashes being scattered in a public place?

AIBU?

Going to a music in August. Great. On the Facebook group for said festival, someone wants to scatter their dad's ashes at the festival in the arena area.
The weather is due to be hot and dry and I don't like the idea that could be inhaling someone's ashes in the arena/tredding the ashes in the ground.
The comments seem to be mixed with some saying go for it and others to be against it like me.

A couple of years ago, a whole ride at a theme park had to shut down after someone scattered ashes mid-ride. So I suppose I have pre-conceptions about these things.

I just feel like there is a better place to scatter ashes without affecting the general public?

AIBU?

I think it's a lovely idea

Wingwalk · 22/07/2026 16:44

A little bit, fine. A whole box, not fine. I was surprised now much there is! And to PP who said "it's not like its someone's bones..." erm yes that is exactly what it is!

Bosee · 22/07/2026 16:46

I think some people here would be surprised how much ash you get given.

We scattered DH surepticiously at a local beauty sport (because to do it legally you need the landowners permission). We covered quite a large area becuase of the volume, but even so you could clearly see where "he" was for months afterwards, despite it being done in January with January weather.

If they intend to scatter everything, in a crowd, it will get in people's eyes and mouths and I really don't think anyone would be so blasé about that if it actually happened.

Oh dear. My Mum is all over Italy, particularly in Pompeii.
A bit more Ash there won't hurt.

Isn't it a big no-no in Italy? My friend in Rome scattered her dad in the middle of the night so not to get caught!

Happyjoe · 22/07/2026 16:54

Nah, think it's fine if a little bit, probably not the whole lot. My partner is under strict instructions to throw me off Brighton pier on a non-windy day. As he says, does he have to wait until I am dead first?!

It's just ash. My parents are on a beach in Cornwall, long since taken away by nature.

WhatAMarvelousTune · 22/07/2026 16:59

I wouldn’t throw ashes in a crowd. But I don’t think that there’s anything inherently wrong with scattering them in a public place.

I assume they meant you aren’t throwing a skull around

notacooldad · 22/07/2026 17:02

I would be horrified if someones ashes landed on me
I wouldn't.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 22/07/2026 17:09

We scattered my mums ashes on a country walk she used to love to go on with her dogs. Unfortunately as we opened the tube to scatter “her” a very large gust of wind blew a whole load of them back all over dh! Thankfully we all laughed about it and I’m sure my Mum would have laughed too. Not much else we could do!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 22/07/2026 17:10

We were out at the seaside the other week and someone tipped ashes off a bridge. The wind blew it all over the people eating on a restaurant terrace nearby.

You can't assume people are going to be at all responsible or considered. They're just as likely to start chucking handfuls of cremains around in the middle of the headline performance.

Even scattering in a beauty spot really isn't ok, it's really bad for the plants etc, ashes are really alkali and kill plant life. It's a massive problem in places like Snowdon.

cranberryhaddock · 22/07/2026 17:12

OttersOnAPlane · 22/07/2026 16:28

It's just a bit of ash. If it gives them comfort or is following their relative's wishes I don't see a problem.

Or, everyone present gets human remains blowing in their face.

BMW58 · 22/07/2026 17:12

OP you ought to do what they did with the tunnel soil in The Great Escape.
None of it would get in mouths, would be walked on so not flying around, and you could probably do the whole lot without anyone noticing.

Createausername1970 · 22/07/2026 17:12

Happy with the idea of small amounts being scattered at intervals around the park/field.

Less happy with someone dumping the entire contents of the urn in one go. There is a lot and it won't be discreet.

I can understand why they closed a ride down if someone dumped an entire urn full on a ride, I suspect a lot of ash suddenly getting on rails or into machinery could potentially cause a problem.

DozyCrow · 22/07/2026 17:13

It would be better if they dug a small hole and put the ashes in that, rather than allow them to disperse on a dry day in a heavy populated area.

ACynicalDad · 22/07/2026 17:15

Fine in public, but ideally not somewhere so crowded. Do it as everyone is leaving if they must.

That's a scene in The Big Lebowski!

SooPanda · 22/07/2026 17:18

Scattering ashes in public places is illegal without permission from the landowner.

thatgreenjuniper · 22/07/2026 17:24

Of all the things we get in contact with, unwillingly, human ashes should be the least of our problems. In reasonable quantity. They're not going to throw the content of an urne in your face.

People have to finish somewhere, and tree pod burial are not common enough yet.

OwlCalledSage · 22/07/2026 17:27

Assuming they don’t do it in a crowded area and everyone is upwind, I’d think it’s fine.

Well my dad is on every street of the village he loved and lived in for 40+ years where his grandmother who he adored bought the second house ever built there. And in every pub "well I spent a lot of time in them"

I had requests to scatter outside of people's houses. In their gardens and the landlord of his favourite pub cried when I told him I'd done it

And did people mind you scattering in their gardens?

hahabahbag · 22/07/2026 17:34

A token amount is ok but there is quite a lot. I think you need to consider carefully. Mil is in a loch, all my family have been interred by funeral directors in cemeteries

fucking grim if you ask me. and i agree, ashes shouldn't be 'scattered' about, i find the idea weird.

shellyleppard · 22/07/2026 17:35

I scattered my mum's ashes at the beach....the tide was out and they just went into a big clump.....
