AIBU as to disagree with ashes being scattered in a public place?

AIBU?

Going to a music in August. Great. On the Facebook group for said festival, someone wants to scatter their dad's ashes at the festival in the arena area.
The weather is due to be hot and dry and I don't like the idea that could be inhaling someone's ashes in the arena/tredding the ashes in the ground.
The comments seem to be mixed with some saying go for it and others to be against it like me.

A couple of years ago, a whole ride at a theme park had to shut down after someone scattered ashes mid-ride. So I suppose I have pre-conceptions about these things.

I just feel like there is a better place to scatter ashes without affecting the general public?

AIBU?

Oh dear. My Mum is all over Italy, particularly in Pompeii.
A bit more Ash there won't hurt.

durdledoris · 22/07/2026 16:02

If they hadn't mentioned it, you wouldn't have known. Wouldn't bother me

Mumdiva99 · 22/07/2026 16:04

It's just ash. Why is there an issue? If you scattered me in a music festival and I landed on people I would be pleased i was being taken all over....to the shower, to a tent, to a wet wipe clean down.....

bettyboo9 · 22/07/2026 16:05

Tbh I think there’s worse things to consider at a festival. Ashes are symbolic, it’s not as though you will be breathing in a load of bones. It’s obviously a hugely symbolic thing for the loved ones to honour the departed wishes. I don’t see how it affects the general public, there’s no h&s issue. Just enjoy the festival and send a good wish out to the departed

Boomer55 · 22/07/2026 16:09

Ashes won’t harm you. Don’t worry about it.

KylieKangaroo · 22/07/2026 16:11

It wouldn't bother me in the slightest. I would not even know what ashes look like on the ground until losing a loved one and now I know. But yes it would not bother me at all.

CrowsInMyGarden · 22/07/2026 16:17

I always joke that I want my daughter to throw my ashes on the top of a roller coaster, just as the people behind me are screaming. She knows it’s a joke though. Hopefully

Well my dad is on every street of the village he loved and lived in for 40+ years where his grandmother who he adored bought the second house ever built there. And in every pub "well I spent a lot of time in them"

I had requests to scatter outside of people's houses. In their gardens and the landlord of his favourite pub cried when I told him I'd done it

NotAnotherScarf · 22/07/2026 16:22

And ive got a mate who was a devoted Bristol Rovers fan scattered behind the goal at twerton Park...the two clubs were very happy to accommodate that

MandemChickenShop · 22/07/2026 16:25

I think its a bit appropriate, personally.

Ashes should be scattered somewhere that allows for quite reflection in my opinion, not the mosh pit.

I accept my view might be considered quite old fashioned

Sunshineandoranges · 22/07/2026 16:25

I would be horrified if someones ashes landed on me

hugasaurus · 22/07/2026 16:27

Probably the least unpleasant thing to get in your mouth during a music festival

ForgotWhatIDidYesterday · 22/07/2026 16:27

it wouldn’t bother me.

My Dad is behind the rugby posts at his teams ground. (An official thing at the time) My Grandad and Grandma are in the local river.

My Mum has recently died and I am planning on splitting her ashes and sprinkling them in her favourite spots. I won’t tell people and will be very discrete.

ContractorQuestion · 22/07/2026 16:27

There’s just over 8 billion people on the planet. All breathing in and out, we are sharing that air. All shedding skin cells as we move, we are breathing those too. All peeing into the water that evaporates into the ecosystem and rains down on us, going back into the water we drink. If you’re at a music festival you’ll be on dusty ground, breathing in dust that contains all sorts of earthly particles already. We are all just a big combination of shared particles.

OttersOnAPlane · 22/07/2026 16:28

It's just a bit of ash. If it gives them comfort or is following their relative's wishes I don't see a problem.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 22/07/2026 16:28

People do this all the time, all over the place and just don’t tell anyone. Yabu to worry about it.

You literally are doing exactly that though - breathing in the deceased person’s cremated body 😊

AuntieDolly · 22/07/2026 16:31

Hopefully it’s just a token amount as a whole persons ashes is quite large.

mondaytosunday · 22/07/2026 16:33

Stopping a ride seems odd. And during a festival? They could do it in a more discreet place. I don’t mind people scattering ashes in a public place, but not during other activities at that place.

Leopardprintbikini · 22/07/2026 16:33

Be glad they were cremated before they were scattered

That’s what I thought , we scattered my uncles at the weekend into the sea and I was surprised how much there was - he wasn’t a big man either

Rothburypixie · 22/07/2026 16:38

Wouldn’t bother me, doubt they’ll be blasting the ashes out of a canon probably will do it in a corner if the arena. If it’s troubling you that much don’t go

growinguptobreakingdown · 22/07/2026 16:39

I'm sure its just a tablespoon- you wouldn't empty a grown man's ashes at a festival as it would be heavy and be quite a large pile. It's really common btw...I imagine the pyramid stage/stone circle at Glastonbury is popular. We recently let a teaspoon of my nephew fly over a beautiful secluded beach.

aliceyyyy2654 · 22/07/2026 16:40

I’m sure they won’t be deliberately pouring it on the crowd and will wait for a quiet area. Don’t go if it worries you that much.
