Just that, really. Every time any member of my family has taken a train in the last few weeks, at least one of the trains that they're supposed to be travelling on has been cancelled.

What is the point of having a train schedule at all if they never stick to it?

Given the conditions (for which the UK rail network was not designed), I think the service is still good. I am in the South East, use trains regularly, and have only had one cancelled since Easter.

If you want to see a truly bad rail network, go to Germany.

Try living in "Northern" land. The trains have been crap and unreliable for years, despite being brought back under Govt control about five years ago, so, no, it's not "privatisation". Sundays are an absolute joke and trains only seem to run if the drivers/guards have nothing better to do, so are usually awful on sunny weekends or when there's a big sports even on the TV! When the train is a two hourly service, that's a long time to wait for the next one to turn up and you don't even know if it's going to turn up. No one from my part of the region trusts the trains to get you to Manchester airport, so people either go the day before and stay in a hotel overnight or take their cars.

Depends on the train company and whether something is out of their control.
Some companies are worse than others.

Southern and South West Trains have had a lot of issues lately - but it's because of trespassing on the tracks.
The whole of Clapham Junction station area ground to a halt recently because of some idiots walking all over the tracks.
That wasn't really the train company's fault.

It's 20 degrees here today. I would expect the train service to be able to cope with this.

What reason did they give though?

The trains are back in public ownership and the service and reliability is heading back to the poor service we used to get in the days of British Rail.

Try commuting in and around London on a daily basis.
and people wonder why people are so heartless when there are casualties delaying or cancelling trains. They just had enough.

It's all the continuous excuses, short of staff, signal problems, wrong kind of wind/ snow/ rain/ heat/ leaves on the track/ trespassers/ sink hole

We must accumulate ALL the incidents that happen in other countries combined.

People are shocked when there's a train running, and some say that they even witnessed train ON TIME but no one believes them

Not on the train from Liverpool to St Helens it isn't.

I was recently in Zurich and my train was late (3 minutes) and the driver aoologised a lot. It’s a big deal there.

i travel by train quite a lot (disabled) and yeah, the timetable is aspirational. Lots of rail replacement buses as well which can be tricky with a wheelchair

I was due to go to Frome last week and all the trains past 12pm were cancelled, because they have no air con. I managed to weave my way down there anyway via other routes and got as far as Westbury where luckily my friend could pick me up. Took an absolute age though and the train I was on from Clapham Junction was honestly about 35 degrees inside at least, a woman fainted as there weren’t even enough seats and it was so hot, no water you could buy on board either. It was such an awful, uncomfortable journey.

I got a full refund and I imagine hundreds of other people did that day too so it will have cost them a lot of money. They’re just not equipped for extreme temperatures.

Not sure what excuse they’d have had for cancelling today though as it’s not that hot.

The DH and I laugh at their 'Get to know Gran before she was Gran' advert. You will indeed have ample time to hear Gran's entire life story while your train is sitting just outside Cross Gates due to a signal failure at Leeds.

Swiss rail is massively subsidised though and everyone is happy to pay for that. OTOH they’re not as reliable as they used to be.

And yet commuting in London is a million times better than trying f to get around in my part of the north. You’re lucky if you can get anywhere on a Sunday.

It was faster and cheaper for me to drive my car from Hampshire to London when I commuted than it was too take the train. Including parking. And, I always got a seat. And, the air conditioning worked.

That is really a dire position to be in.

We supposedly have a train service to Manchester here. Except Northern will often get you to Wigan and then cancel the train (in either direction), which is very fucking helpful.

On Sundays it's usually a rail replacement bus which takes 3 x as long, but costs the same as the train would. Bloody joke.

We did have the oldest rolling stock in the country at one point, I'm not sure if we still do. It's newer than it was, but still terrible.

Northern trains are a nightmare - I rarely get home on time. Last week was a real treat when they sent a 3 carriage train for a 6 carriage service.

I totally agree, I travel from the north of England to London several times a year and very rarely end up paying the full price because I will usually get a partial or full refund due to delayed or cancelled trains. This happened only yesterday, turned up at Euston to find that my train has been cancelled.I would far rather pay the full price and actually get the service which is advertised. I don’t use trains for something important like getting to the airport because there is no guarantee I would actually make the flight ! I also feel very sorry for people that need to commute regularly by tube because many of the tubes I had to get on last week were incredibly hot and dangerously overcrowded.

Yes, but if previous services have been affected by the weather the rolling stock won’t be in the right places to resume a full timetabled service. The Railway Fairy can’t just drop locomotives and carriages back to ‘square one’ to return to normal immediately.

Make sure you always claim on Delay Repay. It’s the only way they’ll sort themselves out

I've stopped using the train these days and get the bus instead. The bus services we have here connecting towns/cities/airport is fantastic. You have to book a seat, so guaranteed one, and it only stops if someone is booked on or off at a stop. It's much cheaper than the train and far more reliable.
