I went for a private healthcare appointment recently and just got the invoice in the post.

It says that the preferred payment method is a cheque! I’m in my 20s and have never written a cheque before. AIBU to think they need to update their payment terms?

If all systems genuinely did go down, to the point no card works ever, we’re in a lot of trouble and the last thing on your mind will be paying cash for some clothes.

OK - well it did happen not long ago and people were inconvenienced as they were mid shopping or in a cafe or something. Maybe not ALL systems (though power cuts bugger card payments up), but some.
Those that had cash were able to continue.

I’ve probably had to make five personal phone calls in the last five years. All to do with NHS stuff (shock!), aside from that everything is online.

my first job out of uni in 2008 was as purchase ledger at a company and my main weekly job was the ‘cheque run’ where I had to sit and basically write out cheques for suppliers. About 150 at a time. Then post them out.

You are paying the surgeon, who is an individual, not a big company. He probably doesn't want to give out his personal bank account details. If you phone up, the hospital presumably has card payments set up so they can accept it on his behalf. I'm surprised they sent an invoice, every private hospital appointment I've had, I've paid immediately at the hospital at the time of the visit.

You can pay in cheques in your mobile banking app. Clear in a couple of days.

Thousands of people have to call for car insurance every day, points, disqualifications, passed their test, medical conditions, restricted car types. Underwriters are required for a thousand reasons - including cars being impounded because someone didn't insure it correctly online.

Just because you have a straight forward policy doesn't mean everyone else does. Making payments by card over the phone is not outdated.

I prefer to make payment on the phone but I and understand things change so have to do it online and on my phone nowadays. I dont spend (much) time complaining about it .
Just call them and see if they answer before thinking of all the scenarios that might happen if they dont answer. It really shouldn't take more than 5 mins maybe 10 at the very most
