To ask why the England team (the men) keep falling at the final hurdle, (well virtually at the final hurdle,) at the football World Cup ... and The Euros too?

Not an England-team bashing thread, but why, oh WHY do they - the men - keep falling at the final hurdle (well, virtually the final hurdle,) every time at the football (soccer) World Cup - and the Euro Cup too...?

They do so well, and get so far, and then BANG they're out. Nearly always in the top 8, or top 4, (and the top 2, in the World Cup once, and a couple of times in the Euros I think,) but never the winner. (Not since 1966 anyway!)

Is it nerves? Is it that they're so anxious to win that they keep making silly mistakes? Are they just not quite good enough? WHAT IS IT? Why do they keep getting so close, but just never manage to get the win?!

As I said, I am not bashing them, and they did well, and I am proud of them, but I just get so frustrated that they can't quite ever get the win!

Didn't say he was a messiah...said he was a footballing genius, so as far as kicking a ball goes he does it very well. Which to some is worth shouting about others not so much. No its not fair he gets paid millions for it while nurses teachers etc get bog all.

Theres also.people like nige farridge who get given millions to do and say what the person who paid him wants him to do and say ...so its up to you who you think is the 'worser' person.

But please stop pretending you knew that Argentina were going to score a goal at 85 minutes and then a second one a few minutes into stoppage time, and were just 'biding their time' with England. Never heard anything so daft! Even THEY didn't know they would score those goals, or at what point in the match!

As both men are currently topical i was just making a comparison between one man who earned alot of money having a certain physical skill that is rightly or wrongly admired my millions .....and another making alot less money, but still alot of money from grifting offf someone else, being a prolific liar, mercenary and having no obvious skill other than being a con man. 😃

A footballers pay is a function of the number of people who want to watch him and buy merchandise related to him and the revenue he can help generate for the teams he plays in.

Exactly. Man City aren't paying Erling Haaland half a million a week out of the goodness of their hearts. It's a business transaction, and they've calculated that he's worth the money.

That's his value on the football market. If they didn't pay him accordingly, Real Madrid or Paris Saint Germain would happily do so.

And people aren’t homeless because footballers earn a lot. In fact, footballers pay a hell of a lot of their earnings as tax. It’s down to politicians how that’s spent.

Yes I prefer it go to the actual sports person. There’s a good movie on this but for the US, Jordan I think changed remuneration. The players with talent and taking a risk should be rewarded over others.

"if you can get it". To get to the top of the football pyramid takes a lot. It is similar to becoming a top drug dealer. Many people are trying to get there.
England - because success was so long away, and football is so central to our culture, then we are desperate to succeed. IMO - England is doing lots of things right, but to become tournamenant winners we have to find a version of the team that is much much better than the competion. This team wasn't. France had clearly the best squad but went out like us!

It’s gone too far though as clubs are actually getting massively into debt to pay the wages of these players. Football clubs are almost all being subsidised by their owners and many of them risk going out of business at the lower levels beyond the top Premiership clubs.

I don’t see that anyone deserves earning £500k a week. Nobody needs that kind of money. It’s obscene. People say that it’s a short career etc. etc. but one week’s wages is as much as many people earn in twenty years and they still have homes and families. I want them to benefit from their talent of course but we have to remember that ordinary fans are in the end paying these obscene salaries and these are ordinary working people. If not through buying match tickets, through buying shirts with players’ names on or buying expensive subscriptions to television screenings of matches,

Maybe the genie is out of the bottle and we can’t go back but I’m a bit fed up in general with seeing people who could never spend the amount of money they have still trying to get more. And that’s not just footballers it’s people in all walks of life - Elon Musk for instance. Why does someone need to be a trillionaire? It’s just greed for its own sake.
