I'm 35 year old man, I have been with my wife who is also 35 since we were in school. We've been married for 7 years and have two kids.

Even though we went to the same school, we always had different friend groups because of university and later work. We also did long distance for a few years.

One thing that has never changed is that I have never been comfortable with her friend group, especially her four Besties. We were always civil, but that's about it.

The reason is pretty simple they never liked me, and I never liked them. Some of the guys in that group bullied me back in school, even before I started dating my wife, and they continued after we got together. My wife always says, "We were teenagers. It was a long time ago. Everyone has grown up." I understand what she's saying, but honestly, I don't feel like those experiences just disappear because we're adults now.

What bothers me more is how much influence her friends seem to have over her.

For example, last year we bought a house together. We both paid 50/50 from money we earned ourselves. The original plan was for the house to be in both our names. Then, right before signing the paperwork, my wife suddenly wanted it to be only in her name because she wanted to own something herself. She told I already have a villa and a share in a family vineyard, but it came through inheritance from my parents and family business, Infact she also has inherited property from her family. This house was different because we both worked and paid equally for it.

I agreed because I didn't want a huge fight, but I can't shake the feeling that this idea didn't come from nowhere. Knowing her friends, I have a hard time believing they weren't involved.

Another thing happened about two months ago. My wife went on a weekend trip with her friend group (around 10–12 people). While I was at work, she called asking if she could take my favorite car because they were short one vehicle. I almost never let anyone else drive it except her, but I trusted her and said yes.

The next day, they came back, and one of the guys who used to bully me was driving my car. I was furious. When I brought it up later, my wife just said, "Sorry." That was the end of the conversation.

Since we bought this house, her friends also come over about once a month, usually on a Friday, for parties. Our garden ends up full of people I genuinely don't like. I mostly stay inside or avoid them because I don't want drama, but it's my home too.

Whenever I tell my wife how I feel, she says this is my issue to deal with. She says she isn't cutting off her friends because they're her support system, What I am asking for is some consideration. I feel like I'm constantly expected to compromise while my feelings get brushed aside. It honestly feels like I have very little say when it comes to decisions that affect both of us.

There are other situations where I feel her closest friends have influenced decisions in our marriage, but this post is already getting long. Am I overreacting here?

Get your name on the deeds of the house and get a divorce.

Hotthread · 15/07/2026 09:01

I like the sound of these friends.

Looking out for their friend in what sounds like an unhappy marriage with serious family
money on your side that she’s not entitled to for some reason (pre nup?)

Hotthread · 15/07/2026 09:02

You were bullied as a child

that’s sad but to be harbouring such a strong grudge decades later - perhaps therapy?

Viviennemary · 15/07/2026 09:03

Your wife sounds awfuland takes no notice of your feelings. This is no good and if I were you I would consider seeking a divorce. It all depends on how you feel. If you feel constantly undermined then it is no good. But dividing up your assets will be difficult and probably cost a lot in legal fees.

Meacofan · 15/07/2026 09:08

Don’t let them look down on you. Unlike @Hotthread I don’t like the sound of any of them (or Hotthread either).

Mousespoons · 15/07/2026 09:10

Assuming there is no back story, it is sad that she doesn’t have your back more, or pull away from these friends if they are disrespecting you and your home/possessions. How is the marriage apart from this? Are you otherwise close or does she generally push you around/disregard your feelings?

Hotthread · 15/07/2026 09:11

The op doesn’t want his wife to be friends with the friends she has

she sounds like a strong woman who’s not going to bow to you controlling her friendships

so… you’ll have to end it then

howshouldibehave · 15/07/2026 09:14

Why on earth would you continue with a house purchase in only her name? Is your deposit protected, are you paying half the mortgage?

Sorry, I can’t get my head around you doing this. Do you have any learning difficulties?

Our marriage is good. We love each other, and she's pregnant with our third child!

The problem is that she doesn't seem to understand my feelings. It often feels like she chooses her friends over me.

How would she feel if I regularly hung out with people she didn't like and invited them over to our home?

This is a “good” marriage?!

How does she find the time to spend so. Much time with these friends?!

No - I don’t think you are over reacting. If it was the other way round ie you were friends with all the ‘lads’ who bullied a teenage girl, I’m almost certain she’d be kicking up a fuss about it.

I’d also be inclined to think that her friends influenced her decision in asking for the house to be in her name… that’s very kind of you to agree! You’re married so I’m not even sure why she feels like it’s a completion with what’s in who’s name ie her reasoning that ‘you’ have a villa is almost invalid because well, you’re married!! What’s yours is hers, no? Well, unless of course you divorce.

I find it crazy, my husband and I are married and there is no ‘yours’ or ‘mine’…

How old are your children? Are these wild parties?

But no you’re not being unreasonable and she should definitely consider your feelings more. You sound like a very kind chap, if you weren’t together for 7 years I’d say it sounds like she’s taking advantage of you (ie taking the favourite car and letting her friend drive it)… well maybe she is still taking advantage and you might have to put your foot down a little? My husband would be fuming if I let anyone drive his car

Elieza · 15/07/2026 09:19

@hotthreadseems to have posted half the posts on this thread. Are you the wife hotthread???

Your wife doesn’t seem to care about your feelings. It’s good to have own friends but hers soumd horrible and shes no compassion. The car thing alone would have me filing for divorce. Nobody drives my car. Nobody. End of. (was it even insured for them).

With regard to the house, i believe in the uk if you’re married it doesn’t matter whose name the house is in, it goes into the pot and she gets half. Maybe more as she will presumably go for custody.

Seek legal advice. Say nothing to the wife unril youve spoken with your solicitor.

I thought about car insurance too, although I know it's not quite the point of the thread.

I can see her point re owning something herself, married or not. Would she get the villa and the share in the vineyard in the event of something happening to you? Would you get her inherited property?

Loulou4022 · 15/07/2026 09:24

No way should the house be solely in her name when you have paid 50/50!!
My DH has a precious car and I’d never even ask to borrow it and I certainly wouldn’t be letting anyone else drive it! I’ve got his older car due to the hot weather and I’d never even let anyone else drive that! Aside from the fact that they wouldn’t be properly insured! It’s his car and he’s given me permission to drive it (I’m properly insured) but I wouldn’t be then lending it out without asking him! If they had an accident in it they’d at most only be covered third party which would cover whoever they crashed with but not your car!

Our kids are 5 and 3.

She feels that she should have something that's only in her name on paper. Honestly, whatever is mine is hers anyway. I even wanted to make her a co-shareholder in the vineyard.

If anything ever happened to me, everything I own would go to her. She doesn't even know that yet, but that's how I've arranged it.

I understood that she wanted something in her own name, so I agreed. My issue isn't that the house is in her name it's more that I felt like I didn't really have a voice in the decision.

Of course and that’s how it should be! It is a shame that she disregards your wishes in terms of the friendship group. Do you have your own friends you can hang out with?

You are very foolish to be with her still.

She is a disloyal witch to be still socialising with men that bullied you.

Get counselling.
Get legal advice.
Get divorced.

I wouldn't be one bit surprised if she is unfaithful.

I would be checking the DNA of your children if you have any doubts.

Sadly you are being taken for a complete fool.

Tell your family the truth and get legal advice.
Get the deeds changed as you can prove you paid half.

Marriage is often about compromise and so I would say you need to out some boundaries in place.

I would start with the housr parties... npt necessary to have so many and if you both decide to have a party, how about inviting some of your friends and family too? Then it's more diluted.

looselegs · 15/07/2026 10:10

As the mother of an adult who was bullied at school, there is no way she would want to socialise or have anything to do with those that bullied her. It affected her really badly, to the point of self harming- to have them say " Oh we were just kids" just doesn't change things. And I definitely wouldn't have them in the house.
Your wife needs to remember where her priorities lie. If she wants to carry on seeing them then she needs to do it away from you.

It affected me badly during my teenage years. I doubted myself many times, isolated myself, and often felt miserable. I wasn't a weak or slow kid, but when a group of people targets you, it's easy to start feeling weak. Even now, those experiences haven't completely left me.

The worst part is that one of her friends the same guy who bullied me is the godfather of our child.

I don't like the sound of them. Bullies rubbing your nose in it driving your car when your wife knows you wouldn't like it? Nasty.
